KenPom lists WAC as 16th best conference
KenPom came out with their 2019-20 preseason rankings. They have the WAC listed as the 16th best conference which continues the WAC's upward trend. Here are the rankings over the last several years:

2014 - 22nd
2015 - 31st (lowest the WAC has ever been)
2016 - 24th
2017 - 17th
2018 - 18th
2019 - 17th
2020 - 16th

The WAC RPI Conference ranking from 2014:

2014 - 22nd
2015 - 31st
2016 - 26th
2017 - 15th
2018 - 15th
2019 - 16th

The KenPom preseason rankings are pretty consistent with where the WAC has been over the past three seasons. The question is, can they move up from 15/16?

That’s kind of hard to do when you have scrub teams like UMKC and Chicago St

The Big Sky wants to slim down or split because of numbers.

There has also been members that have spent $'s on facilities and ones that haven't.

Sorry, posted in the wrong thread. As said before, existing DI schools are possible.

There is some possibility of the WAC improving it's conference ranking within the next couple years. If Dixie State and Tarleton State have good first year transitions like Cal Baptist (#152) then the WAC would be in great shape. Cal Baptist already outranks CSUB (#207) so this is currently a net gain. It shouldn't take too much for DSU and TSU to come in above UMKC (#230) after their initial transition year.
Finally, if Chicago State (#351 out of 353) has to move down from D1 then this would boost the WAC rankings as well. Personally, I hope CSU makes it but all indications seem to be that they will not.
In two years (2021-22 season) we might see a WAC ranking between 12 to 14 with perhaps each team hovering around the following rankings:
NMSU (#50)
GCU (#100)
Seattle (#115)
Cal Baptist (#130)
Utah Valley (#150)
UTRGV (#180)
Dixie State (#220)
Tarleton State (#230)
Thoughts?

Those numbers look overly pessimistic to me, especially for NMSU, UVU, and UTRGV. Looking at realtimerpi.com, end of season 2017, 2018, 2019 RPIs, ...then my guess based on the trend:

NMSU 59, 35, 36 .....#35 would go higher except it's so hard near the top
GCU 131, 156, 117 .... well OK #100 if you insist
Seattle 280,166,211 .... #180
CBU x, x, 200 ... #130
UVU 205, 83, 54 ... #50
UTRGV 319, 229, 142.....#120 Lew Hill is turning us around

You need to take into account coaching changes. UVU was trending better and better under Pope. However, it's still unknown what Madsen can do as a coach.

That's what is remarkable about the NMSU basketball program. It has gone through three coaching changes in four years and still managed to strengthen as a program. Each new Aggie coach has proven to be better than the last.

It is safe to say Hill has his UTRGV program improving yearly.

Whats sad, and this is for GCU fans, that those years the WAC sucked was when Menzies was coaching the Aggies. He lost the regular season title to Utah Valley and lost the WAC tournament championship game to Bakersfield with a future number 1 draft pick on the team. So glad he's at GCU! Please take Paul Weir as another assistant when they fire him from UNM!

New Mexico State carrying the WAC on our backs alone right now.

RE: KenPom lists WAC as 16th best conference
UVU was making strides before Mark Pope took the BYU job. And, Majerle keeps tweaking his roster and coaching staff with the hopes of edging closer/past to NMSU. At one time, it seemed Barnes had Cal State Bakersfield moving in the right direction but it seem now that he merely caught lightening in a bottle with the right group of players; aka team chemistry. He has yet to duplicate that type of performance again. Then again it explains why he is just a career 0.500 percent winning coach. Donlon talks a good game but UMKC will be gone soon enough. The jury is still out on Hayford and Seattle. Injuries derailed his program last season. Croy looks like an up and comer. And, Hill has steadily improved UTRGV. But it is unclear how high he can take that program given its isolation from the rest of Texas and its lack of name recognition.

How about "carrying" us to at least the Round of 32 one of these years?

Wish I could give y’all a boost as well. Alas with only 4 points bestowed upon me I’m unable to help.

I picked up a couple on the CUSA board (I go there for football as GCU doesn’t field a team) but that was mostly for getting snarky against UMass in a non conference game.

Feel free anyone to throw points this way! :)
