I have no bias against Liberty. Certainly not religious - I'm a conservative Christian and I respected Jerry Falwell.

But the fact is, they are schlepping their way to a possible bowl with an extremely soft schedule. According to the MC, so far, their six wins have come over the teams ranked 122, 127, 129, 83, unranked, and unranked. And the rankings go out to 130 teams.

IIRC, they have to win one more game to become bowl eligible. One of those is a rematch with Mighty New Mexico State, the #127 team. The others are versus BYU and Virginia.

If they become bowl eligible by beating either of the latter two, I will doff my cap and withdraw my objection. But if they make a bowl via virtue of wins over Buffalo, New Mexico, New Mexico State x2 (!!!), UMass, Maine (FCS) and Hampton (HBCU-FCS), that will be sad.

Not necessarily arguing with you, but from an institutional point of view it makes sense. It's far better to rack up as many wins as they can until they've been recruiting at an FBS level for years and built up the talent level and fan support.

If they aren't going to a major bowl anyway it's better to go 8-4 with a crap schedule and at least fire up the fans than it is to go 4-8 with a tougher schedule and get the coach on the hot seat but get a nod of respect from impartial observers.

I actually agree with you - for the reasons you mention, what Liberty is doing in scheduling is smart from their POV.

I just don't want to see it rewarded with a bowl bid that IMO isn't really deserved.

They can have fun at a bowl, when 70+ teams go, not much of reward.

Just think that the posters acting like this is a big deal or this shows they will be a legit power are jumping the gun.

Liberty had financial advantages in FCS, as well. They made the playoffs ONCE, going 1-1. So in all the years in the weak Big South, they had one appearance.

From a purely football standpoint, 2019 Liberty has got to have about the weakest set of wins of any bowl eligible team ever.

I appreciate what Liberty is doing as far as going to FBS even though no conference would take them but I hope that future bowl eligible Flames teams have better resumes than this one.

They have wins over:

5-4 - Buffalo
5-4 - Hampton (FCS)
2-7 - New Mexico
0-8 - New Mexico State
4-5 - Maine (FCS)
1-8 - UMass

Total: 8-27 FBS (22.8% win percentage) / 17-36 total (32.07% win percentage)

Upcoming games:

4-4 BYU
6-3 UVA
0-8 New Mexico State (second game)

More than likely they will get their 7th and bowl eligible win against 0-11 NMSU for a record against teams that go 8-36.

That is pretty weak sauce.

Brilliant approach in my opinion.

We always encourage irresponsible kids to live within their means. Liberty probably will finish 7-5 then do their best to play someone like Coastal Carolina in a bowl.

If they manage to win a bowl in year 2. I see them doing well in the transfer portal.

A Liberty vs. Coastal bowl game would probably be enjoyed by both fanbases.

They're probably each other's biggest rival.

Quote:the all-time series between the two schools stands at seven wins for CCU and seven wins for Liberty. Coastal is 5-2 versus the Flames in Conway, while Liberty is 5-2 against the Chants in Lynchburg.

Buying multiple games is responsible?

If its within your means and has a high ROI? Yes.

I never even heard of Liberty until they started trying to move to FBS. Football is a valuable tool for marketing and keeping alumni spending $$$ on the school.

Now that the Sun Belt has five teams with six wins the Cure Bowl will not be available for Liberty

Why is there no Christian Mission bowl? Seems like something the SEC, BYU, Liberty and ND should back.

Interesting. So if they become eligible, they will be an independent floater hoping a conference cant fill its slots?

Which may give them a much “better” bowl than the Cure

Or, if there are 80!eligible teams, no where to go

Yes, it's really pot-luck in that situation.

For example, the SEC might leave 3 slots open. If so, that would be the Independence and Birmingham bowls, both better than the Cure Bowl, but it would also mean one of their very good "pool of six" bowls - the Belk, Liberty, Music City, Outback, Gator, or Texas bowls. Probably the Belk or Liberty bowls.

Some "lucky loser" from a G5 or a non-P5 independent may get to play in one of those bowls.

AAC isn't going to have enough teams to cover the Cure Bowl. Liberty is going to be in if they beat NMSU again.

Many forget that Liberty had to schedule fairly quickly after the NCAA approved for FBS. They have decent opponents upcoming in future schedules. Just don't get all the hate toward Liberty.
