That tells us all we need to know about Liberty.
Can’t deny it.

Actually, you could deny the 17 point claim. Final score was 44-34.

03-lmfao

I thought the score was 44 - 27. Now I look at the box score and see Liberty scored a TD with all of 28 seconds left to cut it to 10.

Pure garbage time, LOL.
If you actually watched the game, you'd know that the last score wasn't exactly garbage time and that neither team had pulled their starters. Rutger is still a B1G team that beats many or most G5 schools, especially teams like LU that has mostly FCS players. Clearly, LU's defense didn't play that well, made several 2nd half miscues, and the refs didn't help in the 4th. But neither team's D's could stop the other's offense. Rutgers was definitely smart to hog the time of possession like they did. I'm not making excuses, just pointing out what happened.

Rutgers is the #118 team by MC. That isn't better than many or most G5.

And when you are down by 17 and score a TD with 28 seconds left, that's garbage time.

RE: Liberty will go to a bowl this year!
Liberty should petition to restart the Miami Beach Bowl, we know Jerry Jr. spends a lot of time at the clubs in South Beach. Seriously though, if you were a self respecting G5 team would you want to take the chance of legitimizing the athletic branch of this theocratic grifter “school” by facing them in a bowl? Liberty is rotten to its largely online core and is irredeemable. Next thing you know people will be calling for Bob Jones University to move to D-I to join the Flames in their quest to normalize athletics as a loss leader for reactionary groupthink gulags.

I could be wrong about his motives, but that seemed to be more of rant against crappy academic schools who want to create the false perception they a legitimate institution by playing division I sports.

I'm excited to see Liberty in live action in a week and a half when they travel to Provo. Should be decent weather for the game.

There's a really big difference between Liberty, Bob Jones, and Regents and say Texas Christian, Southern Methodist, Emory, and Notre Dame. The latter are high quality institutions that can compete with the best universities in the countries. The first three are just bastions of right-wing anti-science evangelicalism.

There are 20 FCS teams that could do better

I have no bias against Liberty. Certainly not religious - I'm a conservative Christian and I respected Jerry Falwell.

But the fact is, they are schlepping their way to a possible bowl with an extremely soft schedule. According to the MC, so far, their six wins have come over the teams ranked 122, 127, 129, 83, unranked, and unranked. And the rankings go out to 130 teams.

IIRC, they have to win one more game to become bowl eligible. One of those is a rematch with Mighty New Mexico State, the #127 team. The others are versus BYU and Virginia.

If they become bowl eligible by beating either of the latter two, I will doff my cap and withdraw my objection. But if they make a bowl via virtue of wins over Buffalo, New Mexico, New Mexico State x2 (!!!), UMass, Maine (FCS) and Hampton (HBCU-FCS), that will be sad.

The mighty UConn Huskies put up 56 against the same team. Maybe Liberty to the AAC? 04-rock

That someone has given up less than 44 points once this season.

Liberty has beaten four FBS. 5-4 Buffalo (hat tip), 2-7 New Mexico, 1-8 UMass, 0-8 New Mexico State. If Liberty makes it to bowl eligible by beating BYU or Virginia, that looks pretty good, but if it doesn't happen until the finale rematch with NMSU well it's not exactly impressive.

To be fair, Liberty would spend at the AAC level.

Worst thing that can happen to Liberty is to have the problem Lavell Edwards always said plagued BYU in bowl selection. That is that BYU fans would go to a bowl game with a twenty dollar bill and a copy of the 10 Commandments and not break either.

If Liberty fans don't spend at the bowl site, they won't be popular. Right now only concern they need to have is finding an opening and then worrying about other things. AState went to Mobile four years in a row in part because one of the main restaurants there set a single day sales record the night before the bowl each of the first three times we went.
This gets quoted a bunch--and has been repeated so much I don't even know the original audience or context. All we do know is it was one of his funny one-liners. Even the media can't agree on how the joke went:

https://www.deseret.com/1996/7/28/192567...one-liners
"They used to say when we went to (the Holiday Bowl in) San Diego that BYU fans would bring a $50 bill and the 10 Commandments and never break either one of them," he said.

https://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?i...type=CMSID
Edwards was also famous for his dry one-liners, including the time he warned revenue-hungry bowl organizers that frugal BYU fans would show up for an out-of-town game with the Ten Commandments and a $100 dollar bill and break neither.

BYU was in the Holiday Bowl from 1978 thru 1984 and then again from 1989 to 1991. If I had to guess I'd say that quote was from somewhere during or around that first 6 year run of being in San Diego annually for the Holiday bowl.

Other fun quotes:
"I'd rather lose and live in Provo than win and live in Laramie."
"They can't fire me because my family buys too many tickets."
Edwards said the greatest moment of his career was winning the national championship. The lowest moment (of my career) happens every time we lose to Utah.

Not necessarily arguing with you, but from an institutional point of view it makes sense. It's far better to rack up as many wins as they can until they've been recruiting at an FBS level for years and built up the talent level and fan support.

If they aren't going to a major bowl anyway it's better to go 8-4 with a crap schedule and at least fire up the fans than it is to go 4-8 with a tougher schedule and get the coach on the hot seat but get a nod of respect from impartial observers.
