Those other teams may be protected by conference tie-ins that will give them priority over Liberty. IIRC Liberty is in a precarious situation because they have no primary ties, just contingent. They really have to hope that not everyone fills their slots.

Fortunately, the SEC looks to come up at least one, maybe two bowl spots short this year.

Liberty lost to Rutgers today by 17 points.

That tells us all we need to know about Liberty.

Gonna have to win 2 out of their last 4 just to get to bowl eligibility. UMass and NMSU on the schedule though

Yep, and even then they need help, some conference not filling all their slots.

It is by no means a sure thing.

Two schools happy to say, "well, at least we still have the Liberty game coming up, that's a winnable game."

Rutgers dominated them for most of the second half. Had they been a bit more aggressive, it would have been a lot bigger blowout. You could see the clear size and speed difference in this game. Liberty, for a FCS moveup, is certainly impressive though.

You win some you lose some. We still have some FCS talent on our roster and we are in year 2 as FBS.

Which is kind of why the title of the OP was just a tad of counting your chickens before they are hatched.

It's still quite doable, but it's not done and dusted.

Liberty going to a bowl will be a disaster. How many tens of students will be expelled after being exposed on kiss-cams?

You don't actually understand how bowls work if you say that.

Each of the 10 conferences have contracts with bowls providing that the conference is guaranteed to be picked if they have eligible teams available.

If every conference meets its obligations under contract, there is no place for Liberty to go. No bowl is breaching its contract to take Liberty.

Now do I expect that to happen? No. Typically a few leagues will come up short and some will have spares.

Liberty isn't getting picked over a spare P5 but sure a game in the south given a choice of a leftover MAC or MWC would probably take Liberty.

With 7+ wins, yes. They'd need 7, not 6 since they play 2 FCS teams. Add to that, playing New Mexico State twice (bottom G5 Ind) doesn't help the cause on top of that.

Bowls won't care about NMSU twice. It comes down to their options. If they have an option they think will sell more tickets and fill more hotel rooms, that will be the option they pick.

Worst thing that can happen to Liberty is to have the problem Lavell Edwards always said plagued BYU in bowl selection. That is that BYU fans would go to a bowl game with a twenty dollar bill and a copy of the 10 Commandments and not break either.

If Liberty fans don't spend at the bowl site, they won't be popular. Right now only concern they need to have is finding an opening and then worrying about other things. AState went to Mobile four years in a row in part because one of the main restaurants there set a single day sales record the night before the bowl each of the first three times we went.

Liberty is doing a great job for a FCS call-up. Might have gotten beaten by a terrible team, but they also have 5 wins which is great in general for anybody who is starting at the bottom of the FBS.

Liberty draws 14-18k per game, I'm not sure they'd be some massive draw for a bowl. There'd be some excitement about a first ever bowl game, and I know the school has alums everywhere with its online degrees, but it's not like they have some massive fan base.

I'd say mostly students as well. When I went to the game I was super impressed with the student section. It was large, loud and well coordinated. They seem to be having trouble engaging alumni and the community though.

Can’t deny it.

Actually, you could deny the 17 point claim. Final score was 44-34.

I thought the score was 44 - 27. Now I look at the box score and see Liberty scored a TD with all of 28 seconds left to cut it to 10.

Pure garbage time, LOL.

If you actually watched the game, you'd know that the last score wasn't exactly garbage time and that neither team had pulled their starters. Rutger is still a B1G team that beats many or most G5 schools, especially teams like LU that has mostly FCS players. Clearly, LU's defense didn't play that well, made several 2nd half miscues, and the refs didn't help in the 4th. But neither team's D's could stop the other's offense. Rutgers was definitely smart to hog the time of possession like they did. I'm not making excuses, just pointing out what happened.
