With how many returning starters you guys have coming back next year, ya'll have to be the 2020 hands-down favorite in the West division, if not the entire conference.

Probably not. The talent we're recruiting is pretty bad when you look at how many actually have offers from P5 schools. Most have their best offer as us or ULM. It's rough.

I get it, but with Watkins, Adams, and Abraham all coming back, in addition to everyone else that's coming back, that's a heck of a lot of talent. But I guess I don't remember who all you guys had in Hop's first year, either.

Nick Mullens and Ito Smith are the two big names, but we had others as well that are playing in the NFL now.

Korey Robertson at WR was another that was on that team. He's not in the NFL, but he was a great college WR.

RE: Hopson’s gotta go.
Hop's contract gives him things to hit to get bonuses.. I haven't seen where he's fired up enough to get more than the $500k.. Let's be honest, the base pay he's getting at USM, he can live extremely comfortable in Hattiesburg and my fear is he's complacent. What I can't figure out is how he let his team blow a 14 pt lead that quickly... No adjustments after the first TD or anything.. Thought his background was a DC, he should've been chewing ass the entire game.

Not making adjustments during the game and especially at halftime is the biggest sign of a poor coach. Since Hop has been here USM looks the same or worse after halftime. No changes no adjustments what so ever.

Speaking of, how many times are we going to get an opposing offense on its heels facing 3rd & long, then call a time out, allowing them to regroup, strategize, and convert?

I get calling a TO on defense in big situations when you want to make sure everyone’s on the same page, but we do that crap at the oddest times and end up getting beat on the next play anyway.

RE: Hopson’s gotta go.
How we should structure our head coach contract:

$200,000 - Base Pay
$200,000 - Winning Season
$50,000 - Championship Game Appearance
$150,000 - Championship Win
$100,000 - Bowl Win
$200,000 - NY6 Bowl Appearence
$200,000 - NY6 Bowl Win
$100,000 - Top 25 At End of Season
$50,000 - Top 15, add $50,000 for every five places better (10, 5, 1)

Get to a bowl and win? You made $550,000. Win the championship? You’re at $600,000, with a chance at $100,000 more with a bowl win. Get us to a NY6 win? You’re over $1.1 million due to projected end of season ranking.

Numbers could be adjusted, but that would incentivize performance pretty well.

Not to mention the times we have called a TO just to end up getting a penalty on the play after the TO? 03-banghead 03-banghead

While that's a great idea, but that's not what we did when we lured young hungry OCs away from their schools for the head coach gig... Let's see what the new AD does.

Would never get a good coach. Good coordinators are making more than what they would make if they came to USM and won a conf championship. They can just go to another G5 school and make $1M and have the same chance of winning, then get a P5 job.

To be fair, I don’t think using women’s hoops as a barometer of how football is handled is very fair. There’s maybe 6 women’s basketball programs in the country that could regularly fill a JuCo gym. Gotta pick your battles.

RE: Hopson’s gotta go.
I had forgot that Hopson is under contract through the 2021 season. If his extension is like his original contract, USM would be responsible for paying him 1 million dollars over the next two years if he was fired. While this would be peanuts to a lot of other programs, it's hard to imagine the AD taking on those payments with the budget here. Especially if the team ends up bowl eligible.....even if they don't end up being picked for a bowl.

In the pre-game radio broadcast at Louisiana Tech the sideline reporter was asked about Hopson's speech to the team before coming out onto the field. I'm paraphrasing here, but he said something to the effect that Hopson told the team that bad things might happen during the game and that they shouldn't get down on themselves when they did. That it was a long game and there would be opportunities for good things to happen. I was like...what??? I understand that sort of a speech when it's half time and the other team is up 10 points and just ran an interception back for a TD at the end of the half. But before the game even begins? The speech should be total positivity and pure motivation! Can you imagine Saban giving that sort of a pre-game speech to his team? Can you imagine Fedora or Monken giving that sort of a speech?

“Something’s going to go wrong at some point and you’re going to need to stay calm and overcome it” is pretty standard pre-game speech fare. I get what you’re saying, though. It all depends on how he said it and what else he said along with it.

Really, though, we jumped out to a 14-0 lead, so the pre-game pep talk was the least of our concerns.

We were down to our 5th string running back or whatever it was in a game at an opponent receiving votes into the top 25. Sure I want to beat everyone and we should play to beat everyone, but it's not like we were supposed to win and dropped it.

I’m sorry, but the fact that we weren’t ‘supposed to win’ against anyone in this awful conference is an indictment enough on Hopson and this program.

RE: Hopson’s gotta go.
After following USM football for a brazillion years, I saw the Tech loss coming from a brazillion miles away...so I wasn't particularly bummed out.

After Harris was pummeled, Tech was the aggressor and out-physicaled (is that a word? 04-cheers) us the rest of the way. Once upon a time WE intimidated the La Tech's and UAB's of the world, but no more.

Oh yeah, Abraham is an average QB on an average team with an average Corch, so what do we expect. Even if we go 9-3, we will be he worst 9-3 football team in 'murica (as opposed to mighty Rice being the BEST 0-8 team in 'murica 03-yawn)

and so it goes mein friends...
