Holding the President to the low standard of not being corrupt is not silly.

They should hold it at Midway Island. The protestors will have a fun time getting there.

This is some common sense ****
Giving a huge contract to your own business as the President of this great country is wrong. Legal, illegal, gray area of some clause, who cares. It is obvious you shouldn't do it. No President has done this in the past and no one should do it now or in the future. This should not be some left vs right issue.
And sure, people will try to argue with "but he said he would do it at cost!!!". Do you know how much free advertising that is alone for his business just awarding himself a monumental contract like that? Anyone arguing that this crap is okay has lost their minds. It shouldn't be normalized as it will only be abused in the future
We've got Democrats/Liberals pushing outrage culture trying to #cancel anyone they don't like while Republicans apparently now think it is okay for our President to award himself huge contracts for a business he didn't divest.
This country is off it's rocker

What president in the past has had the ability to do anything like it. I don't like the "smell test" aspect of using Doral, but I don't see it as a huge deal.

The problem is that we haven't had politicians who got rich anywhere but in politics for some time. And we have consistently overlooked illegal and unethical conduct by too many of them to name. Someone who actually owns a profitable business presents problems entirely different from those presented by career politicians who have gotten rich peddling influence.

The optics of this are bad but if done at cost or free then how could this possibly be illegal?

RE: Fox News analyst: Trump's move to host G-7 at resort direct violation of Constitution
I was already on record saying I didn't care about Doral if climate change was on the agenda. But it's not hard to see how Trump could profit from the G7 being held there even if they didn't really charge any significant money to hold it in June. And that would be the gray area that tests the boundaries of legality or not.
First, there would be extensive renovations and upgrades of the facilities prior to June that even if Doral paid for would be a significant tax write-off. Stuff like improving security, technology, etc. But more importantly, it would be a huge PR advantage to Doral in future promotional literature (for instance, when they try to attract future conferences).
When Rice hosted the G7 in 1990, they used photos from the event for decades (they probably still do on occasion) to reflect the fact that it's a world-class institution that features visits from world leaders. We used photos like this in media guides for years after that 1990 conference. And Rice is still gaining free publicity from JFK's 1962 moon speech at Rice Stadium.
Hell, Trump already is getting the type of positive publicity he enjoys by tweeting out that he's not having it at Doral due to the crazy Democrats and media (his words basically). That might have been his goal all along - you know that 4D chess folks talk about here.

All you guys are aware that Trump canceled Doral for the G-7, right?
So what the heck are you arguing about?

Doing this "at cost" was probably not the plan. It sounded good to say it, but that was not going to happen. It's easy to see why Donny decided to pull the plug.

The last time the held it at Camp David, no one liked it. Greenbriar isn't a bad idea and Trump brings a ton of money to a blue collar state.

I'm sure Trump cares or it would never be proposed for South Florida in June.
Since I live in FL, I'm fine with all that cash being in my state

The G7 leaders wanted it at Doral. Doral is close to the airport and has villas for each country to stay in.
Camp David is a sh*thole as compared to Doral. They would probably rather have it in San Francisco, even if it means navigating the fecal matter in the streets, than to have it at Camp David.

Let's face it. No matter where the admin chose to hold the event SOMEONE would have complained. I'm just waiting for Trump to nominate another property of his. If for no reason than to agitate the constantly agitated.

So... if Trump is doing it at cost... how is he profiting?
I say just do it at Camp David again and let everyone b*tch and moan about how awful it is. Or better yet, do it in West Baltimore at a Best Western or something.

So when Hillary was Secretary of State her getting foreign contributions to the Clinton Foundation was a violation of the emoluments clause?
