For me, Appalachian class of '84, our rivals will always be more like Marshall and Georgia Southern.
Young?? I agree with Marshall as well but we just don’t play them. Same with ECU.
I will also say, it’s not all about football, to me, with rivalries. It spans all competitions. GS is the only current school we have any real history with that we play against. Other than UNCC
Wat? App doesn't really have a history with UNCC. Especially nothing like App/Marshall or App/ECU. App has 2 games with Marshall and 4 games with ECU coming between now and 2026. The next time App plays UNCC is 2026.
I attempted an edit but I guess I didn't save changes. But, you would be correct if rivalries were defined only by football from long ago. I attended electric games in Kidd Brewer and at Marshall in the 90s and I can attest to the rivalry. Current students have no relationship to that rivalry as it will be 20 years since our last meeting. The question was " who do we consider rivals now that we don't have Western anymore?" and I think UNCC fills that hole for many reasons.

I can't speak for Southern, though I know they had some epic games against Furman through the years and that there was a strong rivalry there, too. As for App, some of the old school fans still considered Western our main rival (Old Mountain Jug and all). Some saw Furman as much of a rival as GS, and that series dated back to the 70's rather than just the 90's. But with the move-up, all we had left as rivals were each other, and I think the focus on "Hate Week" has multiplied because of it.
This definitely cemented the two together, although in my mind, and probably many other GS fan minds, App had taken over the #1 spot since they had beaten us a few times in recent years and had great success late in the FCS run.
Since you guys dont have Western anymore, who do most App fans consider as rivals besides GS? I know you guys play Troy on "Rivalry Weekend" but is that a forced thing or are App fans buying into it?
I thought we were developing something intense with stAte but the league office keeps on not scheduling us to play each other. I think Troy is a good game too, but they're not quite what we had with, say, Furman. Still more time to let rivalries develop naturally.

App vs stAte was on its way to becoming very big. But, who doesn't love a yearly game with Texas St, right?
And I like Texas St. But damn at the missed chances

Except we are talking about football rivalries. GS is the only true rivalry we have for the foreseeable future. We have played UNCC twice, in history, and both games were within the past two years. It isn't even close to being a rivalry.

Georgia Southern can define this rivalry with three “hits”
1. We hit App in the face
2. App hits the ground
3. Apps mom asks us to hit it from behind again

Defining the App/GS rivalry? One aspect is the interest it generates on both sides... .heck the Game thread is 30 pages long and we still have another 9+ hours until kickoff!

Number of times each Sun Belt team has beaten App since 2014:
South Alabama 1
Ark State 1
ULM 1
Troy 1
Georgia Southern 3
