For others late to this, there' been a lot of talk about the petition and the things leading up to it on this board, most recently in the "Future Football Schedule" thread.

The Kent Stater/KentWired had a solid story this week, quoting a lot of the people involved (though not Nielsen). President Diacon is quoted but didn't say much except "we're studying it." Link is.
http://www.kentwired.com/latest_updates/...92fdc.html

I saw online stories from Crain's Cleveland Business (a good news operation) and one of the Cleveland TV stations today. First stories I've seen outside the Stater. Nothing from Beacon or Record-Courier or PD.

I've consistently heard there has been higher-level pressure against publication at the Beacon and R-C. (Most of that was before the petition went public. It should be even harder to ignore now. I'm a retired journalism professor, and I'm really disappointed in those papers. In all my time in the newspaper business, I never saw a well-researched story spiked like this.)

Going public has given this thing some legs.

The beacon had an article in the Thursday paper. It’s funny how something as dumb as canceling a field hockey game caused this to go public. There were employees using master keys to harass people and employees gawking at the gymnastics team and nothing much happened.

Hi Burden,

It is kind of crazy, isn't it?

I think a big reason for nothing happening is that, as the climate study demonstrated, people were afraid to report wrongdoing for fear of retaliation.

One of my biggest regrets was not doing more when I was there. I was afraid of losing my job, especially as I was closing in on completing my master's degree. I'm not proud of my silence as I watched things get worse and worse.

Getting out of athletics entirely is part of why I felt safe coming forward a little over a year ago. I provided pages and pages of documents to the Akron Beacon Journal and Record Courier (two newspapers now in the same chain) in August of 2018. Reporters interviewed key witnesses, reviewed all of the documents, made more public records requests, and wrote a series of articles. Those stories were killed by the ABJ's editor in what I suspect, based on my own experience as a reporter, was part of a coverup.

I disagree, however, that the field hockey incident was silly. It showed once again just how dysfunctional the department is under Joel's "leadership," whether anyone thinks his handling of the situation was insensitive or not. Carelessness and lack of planning and due diligence have been staples of Nielsen's tenure.

Unfortunately, Nielsen has always been a teflon don, as staff and donors have come to call him. There is a layer of KSU administrators suffering from willful blindness.

As former KSU general Counsel Jim Watson commented on our blog yesterday, "Nielsen will never be removed so long as the upper administration continues their love-affair with Nielsen. They work hard to cover up his screw ups and place the blame on others. I get the feeling the new president is an honorable man. After that, not so much."

RE: JN Petition
I won't sign it. I am a donor and like Joel. When I donate, I earmark my donation for MBB. I have personally never been or felt alienated or taken for granted. I also don't care if someone feels we don't have enough women coaches. I don't care what ranking we are in that regard. I honestly don't care that we forced an early ending to a FH game. Was it poor planning? Sure. I will go with that. Were they notified way in advance (like when it was scheduled) this could happen? Yes. I just don't care. If someone wants to extrapolate that means JN hates women or treats them unfairly, go for it. I am not buying it.

Now, if you want to tell me Joel walks around being an arrogant ass, ok I will bite on that. I have heard plenty of stories. And believe plenty of them. But he is the boss. We have all worked for people we didn't like or respect. He would certainly get more out of his people if he had a family type atmosphere.

That said, I feel like this is a witch hunt. And quite frankly, even more so than the fact that I like Joel, I don't like where this has gone. It, MORE THAN ANYTHING JOEL HAS DONE, is drawing negative attention to KSU. Stop the shenanigans. The President of KSU will handle things his way when he feels something needs to be done.

I don't really have any inside knowledge, but I'll say this. I'm tired of seeing good, underpaid, assistant coaches leave the basketball team for apparent lateral moves while we have the highest paid AD in the MAC. And I'm tired of watching the football team play 3 money games a year because we need the money... While we have the highest paid AD in the MAC.

For whatever it's worth, Huffman was the name that caught my attention on that letter to the president.

I too don't like our assistants leaving, but really only Mincy do I remember at the time being a lateral move. I don't mind the 3 money games in football. I mean JN's salary isn't making up the difference if we give one of those back. Lastly, what the hell does Trevor Huffman know about JN? Laing was here during Trevor's time and Huffman never worked in the department. All he could know is the same as us. Stuff he's read or hearsay.

The parents at the local middle school did a petition to get the principal canned. He did get fired. The best comment was, "I'm a cop and deal with criminal everyday and this guy is the biggest scumball I've ever meant."

Haynes and Mincy both went from us to Toledo. Steinberg went to YSU but I believe he did move up a spot on the bench. Haut went from being our top assistant to Northern Kentucky's top assistant. Northern Kentucky has been D1 for about 10 minutes.

To clarify my comment on Huffman, I'm saying I was surprised to see his name on there and not sure what to make of it. Not disagreeing with your take on that Danny. I will say, he's the GOAT and can do no wrong in my eyes though lol.

Haut had been here for a long time. I could be wrong and would have to text him, but pretty sure he didn't leave over money. He was simply ready for a change of scenery. Had worked with Coach Horn before and it just made sense for him. I honestly can't remember but didn't Haynes go to Michigan before he ever sat on the bench at UT? If so, I don't count that because he would have been gone either way.

Perceived or factual, Nielsen has become a liability. Donors are withholding. Coaches are leaving and/or unhappy. Long-time sponsors are leaving. Time for a change.

No worries. He is the GOAT. I certainly did misunderstand you citing his name being on there as something other than what you meant.

As an aside, I think you can get a feel for this thing by asking people who are totally unconnected to it what they think. We are all emotional about it one way or the other because of our connections to KSU.

My brother, who worked in the Memphis athletic department for years and is a lawyer read through a lot of this and thought it was petty. Dan Wolken, who writes for the USA Today (and used to live in Memphis) told me while he can't defend Joel, he clearly doesn't feel strongly enough about these accusations and situations to write on it and draw national attention to it (thank god). I guess I am saying he thinks it's a non-story.

I don't even know that that is true. I know some big ones who aren't withholding. The other thing is, after a LONG career, Matt Geis left KSU. Maybe Matt leaving had something to do with donations being down. If you don't believe him leaving had any affect, you are saying he wasn't responsible for donations at one time (under JN) being at an all-time high. I certainly don't believe that.

Na Haynes spent a year at UT. It was Illinois St he was with for a minute before Michigan. Obviously he and Mincy were not going to be here long, but in my opinion it was pretty embarrassing to see them leave us for a MAC school. But I don't blame them.

Yeah, that's how the cop described him. When he got fired, we heard rumors of drug use or misuse of funds. When I wondered which, my friends said those are mutually exclusive. It was a rare case of getting canned and truly, truly deserving it.

As far as Joel goes, when someone stirs up this negative feelings, usually there is a serious problem. If the administration won't address it, then people are forced to go public. It's too bad that it causes bad press, but that's really up to the administration to actually do their jobs and manage their employees. This won't end well.

Hi Danny,

I completely respect your opinion. We actually don't like where this has gone, either. By that I mean we don't want to see Kent State's reputation damaged. We got to the point where we didn't couldn't think of any other option that would inspire change in an athletic department that is so damaged. We came forward the way we did because our experiences tell us that Kent State won't take any of this seriously and will continue to protect Joel and blame others.

As Jim Watson, former KSU general counsel, wrote on our website recently, "Nielsen will never be removed so long as the upper administration continues their love-affair with Nielsen. They work hard to cover up his screw ups and place the blame on others. I get the feeling the new president is an honorable man. After that, not so much."

We actually believe that signs point to President Todd Diacon being a very decent person. We just don't have faith that people who report to him will give him the full story. We have too much experience witnessing the coverups. The board of trustees and Diacon himself, the university's senior VP, apparently had never been told of the climate study's revelations about the athletic department until after the field hockey incident.

If we had reason to believe the system at KSU would actually work, we would have shut up.

You are as passionate as any Kent State fan I've ever known. I've always respected your opinions. And I respect your position on this.

If you don't believe him leaving had any affect, you are saying he wasn't responsible for donations at one time (under JN) being at an all-time high. I certainly don't believe that.

Money talks.
JN schedules big games in football because he cannot raise funds on his own. You know my opinion. I hope football does this indefinitely until they drop to DII

Have you ever asked Senderhoff to make sure he got your money? Ask Rob if money going to MBB has ever mistakenly been misallocated.

In talking to VP Sokany 100% there has been a major drop in monies coming in since this news has been made public. Over 100k in just 3-4 days. It is a really high number that is climbing. They hope donors will come back. Several people in administration know that not only will the money come back but it will increase when you get an AD that you can trust.

More news outlets are getting involved and more info will be coming out.
