I am also sure you guys are good dudes and I kind of understand the concern but I don't see the problem with this kid getting rewarded for a lifetime of hard work. If anything I could see people getting pissed about a kid who transfers out in the middle of the season without any type of heads up to a coach that recruited and played him. The walk on deal is not the problem in this spot IMO.
The problem is UNCW students pay an athletic fee of $800 per year. That fee pays most of the expenses for our athletic department. If that walk on is a Chris Flemmings type player who shows up when we don't have scholarships available, sits a year and then EARNS the scholarship with stellar play, that's the reason we have scholarships in the first place. They are not rewards for hard work and persistence, they are used to bring top talent to play sports at UNCW. Also, when we're playing in NCAA games more money is flowing into the program from multiple sources. At that point, giving a scholarship to a walk on is financially responsible. We're not in that position, and if it weren't for some players transferring, we'd be short on available scholarships with no seniors and a desperate need for big men.
All of that is fair. I do still think the NCAA should financially penalize scholarship players who leave a program. Especially student athletes that leave a team during the season as two of ours did this year and at least one did last year. I have no qualms with the athletes that leave in the off season but leaving a team high and dry in the middle of the season should absolutely be penalized.

Or, if you are filling a spot vacated mid season, you should be able to bring in a player from the portal that can play immediately instead of having to sit a year.
Superb idea as well.

RE: POTENTIAL STARTING LINEUPS
Wondering where everyone stands on a starting lineup at this point?
We're 0-4 in CAA play, but we've now implemented the press, Gadsden is back, and we're playing much closer games.
Here's where i'm at:
Phillips, Gadsden, Okauru, Sims, Linssen
Boggs, Dodd, Tolefree subs
Bowen should only play if the game is over.
Boggs, Dodd and Tolefree coming in is a great group for the press, and IMO our offense looks better when Dodd comes in, because we aren't trying to pound it in the paint to him every posession. That's a pretty solid rotation.
Of course Estime will return, which should confuse the issue even more when that happens.
What matters most though is what will we do to score more points? Our offense and rebounding are so bad that the steals and TO's we are creating with the press haven't helped. We just scored 66, 60 and 60 in the past three games with a full court press the entire game.

If you lose a player midseason due to transfer, as opposed to academic or behavioral issues, then you can bring in another transfer right away.
That could help incentivize some players to play at the midmajor level
However it could lead to some underhanded shenanigans.

How do you propose financially penalizing someone you do not pay?
Easy. Recouping the money value of the scholarship they signed for.
Just straight up quitting on the team like that is a breach of contract.

All that is easy. If the NCAA did it right they could find a way. Not allowing athletes to put their name in the portal until it’s paid, or not allowing them to play for their next team until it’s paid.
Keep in mind, this would only penalize athletes that leave during a season, like our two this year.

That makes sense and I could see that working from a practical standpoint
From a PR standpoint it would be horrendous.
Currently scholarships are year to year with either party being able to terminate at any time
Under this proposal, the school would be able to terminate at any time without financial penalty while the player could not

I think Ty needs to eventually work his way back into the starting lineup. I like Tolefree and his size but he needs to come off the bench. Estime' will need to be relegated to coming off the bench as well when he comes back.
Phillips-Gadsden-Okauru-Sims-Linssen. Get the best 5 on the court. We'll struggle on the glass but what else is new?

I wish we had more bigs to give Boggs a starting slot.
My ideal starting lineup with this group would be Phillips, Gadsden, Boggs, Sims and Linssen.
Due to our actual roster though, I'll take the same as SN08 (Phillips, Gadsden, Okauru, Sims, and Linssen). I'd also take Phillips, Gadsden, Boggs, Sims and Linnsen but that shortens Dodd as the only "almost big" coming off the bench.

I'm having concerns with Sims. His offense has gone down, his rebounding is below average and I don't think he's as good a defender as Boggs. Boggs has looked fantastic in the press and has the purest outside shot on the team besides Gadsden. I'd like to see him get more PT.

While i think Sims is a solid offensive player, i don't think he's good enough to be "the guy" just yet without much help. With little else, teams have started to focus on shutting him down and it's worked.

I suppose. But he's the closest thing we have to "the guy". The only other player I want with the ball in his hands late in the game is probably Shykeim, but in that situation, I want him open to scoring OR dishing.
If healthy, Gadsden would be that guy.

Right, i agree with you. My main point is he needs help. Since other teams know we don't have much, they have been keying in on stopping him. I think he's perfectly capable of being "the guy" when we have a few other guys that can hurt opposing D's as well. But, with our offense struggling, he's been pressing

I understand your thinking here, and honestly... you've seen far more of the play on the court than my eyes have. It really sucks trying to formulate opinions on this sort of thing... roster, Xs/Os, etc thanks to FloSports.

Sims is having trouble with him jump shot. It's still too flat. With teams throwing a zone at us every game it takes away from his slashing ability. As Gadsden gets his feet under him and hopefully more shots start to fall, teams won't be able to play as much zone. I think that will help Sims.

You have to attack the zone to beat the zone.

His offense has gone down, his rebounding is below average and I don't think he's as good a defender as Boggs. Boggs has looked fantastic in the press and has the purest outside shot on the team besides Gadsden. I'd like to see him get more PT.

That's a scheme to attack that a good coach would have.....
But Gary's point still stands, you need someone that can shoot. Even attacking the zone it most times creates opportunities for kick outs to mid range and threes.
