If I were coach at this point, winning would be more important than getting "looks" at different lineups and schemes. I would want the looks, but not at the expense of the W.

You are trying to quickly and radically reverse the culture of the last two years (Coach McGrath has now explicitly stated that their goal is to win the CAA Championship this year). Losing for any reason to a D2 team is a bad way to go.

Yep. I 100% agree. This is his “put up or shutup” year. IMO, he’s officially on the hot seat.

He was on the hot seat last year when they nosedived after the Hofstra win. When you rank over #350 in any category I would suggest it gets the AD's attention.

I certainly agree, but financially the AD was not in a position to make a change. I think at the end of this season (depending on results) that flexibility may change.

It's cheaper to get rid of a tanking basketball coach. Donations, sponsorship and attendance all nosedive when the program is down and there are no signs of righting the ship. I just hope that IF he goes, we pursue a Keatts type coach with a press at the heart of the defensive philosophy. IMO, it is the best approach available for mid level mid majors. It is also the most exciting for fans and appeals to players.

I would hope that the if/when we do make a change at the HC position, the AD and whoever else is closely involved in that process would ask those specific questions. In terms of understanding their defensive and offensive philosophies and what coaching changes/adaptations they would make if what they're doing just isn't working.

If Jimmy needs a to hire a HC in the next couple of years it shouldn't take long. Call up Takayo Siddle and right your wrongs from the last coaching search. It really is that simple IMO.

MEhhhh...... not sure i'd go that far. State isn't exactly clicking on all cylinders with them there. Further, he was passed up for a reason

Everyone has us where we should be. I am waiting to see if CB can do it this year. Don’t think it’s right to get ahead of ourselves from who won or lost a closed door practice scrimmage. Sure it doesn’t give anyone warm fuzzies. We have a lot to prove this year and plenty of motivational material to assist the staff with lighting a fire beneath these guys. Trying to stay balanced until we SEE these guys play ball for a month or two.

Exactly. We won the first of a split scrimmage with UNC last year. Don't think UNC sucked because of it. The score is the least important thing in a closed scrimmage. I prefer to wait and see what the results are on the court before passing judgement. But this is the year things have to improve quite a bit.

This CAA preview has us in last
"Since taking over for Kevin Keatts, CB McGrath has shown an inability to coach the defensive end of the floor. Last year was even worse than year one, with the Seahawks ranking 339th nationally in adjusted defense per KenPom."

and

"Florida transfer Mike Okuaru being immediately eligible should help in the backcourt next to Ty Gadsden and Kai Toews, but it won’t matter if the defense isn’t any better."

^^This^^

If Coach can coach defense, this team could be a lot better than we might realize. If defense isn't a lot better, then.........

I'm not letting the results of a scrimmage discourage me, but if we're hiring a new coach in March, 82 is the right area code, but at the wrong school for our next coach. Somebody will eventually recognize what a good coach Levelle Moton is and hire him. I hope we're preparing for the NCAAT, but I really think Moton is primed to get a look soon.

I absolutely loves LeVelle, but he's out of our league now. We could've gotten him in 2016 but not anymore. He knows his worth and loves his alma mater. He won't leave unless it's a job he can't turn down. UNCW isn't that anymore.

He hasn't received a lot of public interest recently, which I assumed was more of an indictment the level of respect HBC coaches receive. Perhaps it's him being selective. Not sure I've picked up on that, but that is an interesting perspective.

Moten's last two years were a bit underwhelming barely over .500. Although they got hot at the right time both years. Maybe that's why he hasn't garnered as much attention? He was 25-9 in 2016. I do agree with you guys though, i think he's a very good coach.

I know he was a candidate for the GA State job last season, though I do believe they decided to go in a different direction. I just don’t think UNCW would make much sense for him. He would be a top notch hire though if it were to entice him.

It’s not really his record that puts him out of our league it’s his brand. He has NBA players rocking NCCU gear, works them out during the summer, and is just an all around well respected basketball mind. Also, it’s harsh to judge him by his record, look at the non-conference schedule he has to work with. The fact that he’s above .500, let alone winning 25 games some seasons is remarkable.
I said i agreed with you that he's a good coach. But i have to call BS on the schedule excuse, Some of the losses last year were not to great competition.

That is unless you consider Coppin state, Mcneese State, Coastal, and Ap State Hoops juggernauts

That’s my bad. I got them and Texas Southern mixed up in regards to the non conference schedule. Should’ve done my research first!

RE: POTENTIAL STARTING LINEUPS
I'm not on board with just gettiing a good coach, I want a coach that thrives in a system that will work at the midmajor level, with midmajor talent, long term. If the California law catches on, and players can sign contracts to market products, it's only going to get worse for midmajors unless they happen to be in a major media market. Charlotte, Richmond and Greensboro may be able to lure prospect due to businesses in the area that we can't. Talent may become even less in our reach over time than it is right now, so a winning system will become even more important.

Very good point, one that is probably being underestimated. Right or wrong, I bet you a nickel the the NCAA will have to buckle to some extent on this.

The only thing that I observer is that when big shakeups and changes happen in the collegiate athletic structure, it pays to be a program that is hitting on all cylinders at that time. At least you have a chance to have some options. The last time a big shakeup happened we were in the DePaulo/Merthens era and the world left us behind to an extent.

Man, I really hope that Coach McGrath can make things work going forward....I have an idea that we are entering a phase where we need to be getting it done.
