Another service academy in the American to go with Navy makes some sense but then they become a UConn geographically for travel of extremes. Too bad you couldn't add them and Colorado St [just two hours apart] and drop Tulsa.
In theory, theory and practice are the same; in practice, they aren't.
Anyone who thinks Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins are only two hours apart has never driven I-25, which often functions as a parking lot through much of the Denver metro, and not only during traditional rush hours. I get frequent, exasperating reports about traffic conditions from my daughter, who has lengthy commutes to-and-fro along the I-25 corridor. Regardless, AFA and Colorado State would be good additions if indeed additions are deemed desirable or necessary. For sure it would make it easier for me to see my Bearcats in person from time to time.
My daughter earned two undergraduates degrees from CU Boulder and a masters from CSU. Both of my sons also earned degrees from CSU. For a while, all three were in school at CSU at the same time, my youngest son as an undergrad, and my oldest son and daughter as grad students -- Pecunia transit.

RE: Air Force to the AAC?
BYU is never going to be an option. They lost too much face when Utah went to the PAC12. Unless they make a "power" conference they will continue to be an independent.
I am in favor of adding AF and pushing Tulane into the east. Take from the MWC and strengthen the AAC.
I would rather stay at 11 then add Buffalo, App St etc. Give them a few more years and see if they can continue to grow. We have time, its not like another conference is going to suddenly snap them up.

RE: Air Force to the AAC?
I might imagine AF as a Football only addition similar to Navy. It is just hard to imagine the AAC athletic directors and presidents wanting to add that travel to the rest of their sports teams.
So for the AF athletic director, if they moved their FB, would the MW conf want the rest (probably not). So where would the rest of their sports go?
Would ESPN offer the AAC any additional money to take the AF? Most likely not. It might raise the AF Academy profile a little in parts of the country where they don't have much today, but I doubt that would be important to them.
I could really enjoy the idea of flying out to Colorado for a FB game every couple of years. It could make for a nice mini vacation.
So interesting speculation. Maybe worth a beer with the right set of friends. But I really can't see it happening.

I would think the AFA would be a "Football Only" addition, with their other sports being maintained in some conference closer to the Academy (like Navy's other sports being maintained in the CAA). I would think the MVC would be a good fit, others are mentioning the Summit, which now has some of the Dakota schools in it.
The upside of this would be to allow the AAC to either "hold pat" at 11 members for their BB and Olympic sports or to add a 12th non-FB member (like VCU, etc...).
I still don't see the AFA deciding that the AAC is a "better fit" than the MW, but whatever...

Bolded, conversely, will there be a reduction in the ESPN payout after shedding UCONN?

I don't know where to find the statistics, but I picture UCONN as a black hole for ESPN ratings during football season. They didn't seem to do anything for getting us the NYC market football or otherwise.

So we have 2 years to get a replacement and go back to divisions or to dump one team and play a 9 game round Robin.
If ESPN will not reduce money dumping Tulsa or Tulane makes sense.

That still wouldn't work. Navy has stated that they will not play a 9 game conference schedule.

Maybe that's the answer to get to 10 - drop Navy. Or apply for another waiver for 2022 and forward.

Then dump Navy.
At 9 they still can play ND, Army and AFA. I looked at the others they play and it varies from Lafayette to Marshall etc. None of which is a tradition game.
