Is TJ3 being allowed to make reads?
He is great at selling the fake and looking off a route, but sometimes he’ll come back to the route and throw into double or triple coverage. There was a throw yesterday where he looked off the defense to his left but when he threw the long ball back to the right he either didn’t see or didn’t check that a safety had already slid over to join the CB. Made me try to recall a clear check down from TJ3 and I can’t. He’s not staring guys down, which is good, but it seems that he either isn’t sharp at going to 2nd/3rd options or doesn’t have the green light to do so

Just to be clear, that’s not unheard of or necessarily a bad thing at the college level. You’ll hear a lot of QBs get dinged for this come NFL draft time.

He oftentimes makes up his mind where he's gonna throw it before the snap...

I think people forget he's a redshirt sophomore with just less than one season of starting experience. Yes he's been on campus for 3 years but I think if you compare him to other QBs with his level of live game experience he's light years ahead of most. Right now he can do his pre snap reads pretty accurately. Going to check plays will come from more game experience and film learning.

TJ has been around for four years, and at times it’s hard to believe.

That’s clear. But it’s possible the coaches could have made up his mind for him from the start. Spurrier teams did this...the QB throws to a spot the play is designed to open (counting on college defenses not picking this up). Of course, defenses did eventually adapt, just saying it’s not unheard of to tell your QB to hit a specific spot with predetermined timing on every pass play.

No substitutes for live game experience at college game speed in front of a crowd and under the lights. TJ3 has almost a season worth of starting experience now. He will continue to improve as the game slows down for him. But I agree its frustrating to see regular throws into double coverage. Currently if you pressure him he struggles with quick target selection and ball placement, as do most young QBs.

If Tyler stays healthy and humble then next year he will be an absolute beast to defend, particularly with most of the offense on the field last night returning, minus Parham and Haden (and Dufour who didnt play),’and an Oline with a year of experience together.
