My bad - I was looking at the wiki page and was mistaking division titles (and shares of division titles) as conference championships. Please disregard.

@Gamecock: it’s all good. I had to look it up myself.

Boise State has unquestionably had a stunning run of success for the past 15-20 years. Still, there seems to be a view that they are THE dominant team outside of the “P5” leagues. I question how true that really is.

For the past decade, they have played in 1 major bowl (and yes, they did win it. But still, only 1). Opponent’s W-L record *before* the bowl game:

2010 (last yr./WAC): Las Vegas Bowl vs. Utah (MWC/10-2)
2011 (1st yr./MWC): Las Vegas Bowl vs. Ariz. State (PAC/6-6)
2012: Las Vegas Bowl vs. Washington (PAC/7-5)
2013: Hawaii Bowl vs. Oregon State (PAC/6-6)
2014: Fiesta Bowl vs. Arizona (PAC/10-3)
2015: Poinsettia Bowl vs. Northern Illinois (MAC/8-5)
2016: Cactus Bowl vs. Baylor (BigXII/6-6)
2017: Las Vegas Bowl vs. Oregon (PAC/7-5)
2018: 1st Responder Bowl vs. Boston College (ACC/7-5)

Isn't that really the case for any G5 that doesn't make the CFP?

2010 was #10 Boise vs #20 Utah (which you left that record out, they were 10-2 before the game)

It sure is. And that’s the category in which Boise State has found itself for most of the past 9-10 years.

Quote:2010 was #10 Boise vs #20 Utah (which you left that record out, they were 10-2 before the game)
More relevant to point out (IMHO) that Utah and Boise were still
competing in their “old” conferences that season. In other words: Boise State did not go to a major bowl that year and did not compete vs. a team from a “BCS conference” (as we called them back then). But yes, I’m happy to admit that Utah had an outstanding team that year. The Utes were probably on track for the Rose Bowl until they got stomped by TCU, which went to Pasadena and beat Wisconsin to finish undefeated 13-0.

Interesting stat. What skews perception to thinking they play in one 4 out of 5 years is that they're usually ranked every year, (but ultimately finish just one win short of going to the BCS bowl),

RE: Bowl Eligible schools, 2019
the thing I always say looking at Boise's bowls this decade is how much it sucks the G5 that if they don't make a big bowl- the drop off is way too far down..... I mean no way in hell some of those games are right for Boise.

Gotta hand it to BYU. They stepped up and delivered when the season was on the line.

Congratulations to both.

Is there a chance CUSA could have more eligible teams than bowl slots?

One bright spot is the Independence Bowl. As the SEC is extremely unlikely to fill its spot in that bowl, CUSA is up as their replacement, and LA-Tech would be a natural fit as basically a home anchor, if they don't win the conference. UAB could go there as well.

Utah got beaten to pieces by TCU and entered that bowl game severely depleted, having to use a WR out of wildcat because we didn't have a playable QB. I'm not sure that 2010 team, even when healthy, beats the 5-7 teams of 2012, 2013.

More than likely. In addition to UAB and La Tech, WKU needs one more win and we have 4 other teams that are currently 4-3. That said, I don't think 6 wins will get you into a bowl game unless we have only 5 bowl eligible teams.

Woohoo! Now they might get to go to the only bowl they were originally going to go to. Playing for the same thing since their first loss.

RE: Bowl Eligible schools, 2019
Seems like the last few years that even with the enormous number of bowls, there have been more bowl-eligible teams than bowls, such that a couple teams that were bowl eligible missed out.

I get the sense that this year it's going to be different. E.g., the SEC might only have 8 or 9 bowl teams despite having 11 or so slots.

So this is a good year to be a floating independent like Liberty, or say the sixth bowl eligible team in a conference with only five ties, needing slots to open up to get in a game. I bet that every team that is bowl eligible this year actually plays in a bowl.

I still believe.

Flying out to College Station next week for that one so maybe I'll be good luck and get us to win number 6.

It's probably way too early to start looking at this, but these are the teams that might be "next up" to fill a bowl slot at 5-7. This is the top 70 APR schools taking out only those that are already eligible or have more than 7 losses, as well as the Pac 12 schools

Northwestern (1-7)

Georgia Tech (2-6)
Ole Miss (3-6)
Iowa State (5-3)
