RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Temple beat LaSalle 70-65 giving Temple it’s third straight win to start the season.

Displaying it’s pressure defense in the first-half, Temple made 12-steals causing 17 LaSalle turnovers, and limited LaSalle to scoring only 22-points. Those LaSalle turnovers lowered LaSalle’s scoring, and contributed to Temple scoring 36-points in the first-half. Once again, Temple’s defense created Temple’s offense.

In the second half, Temple failed to apply pressure, and LaSalle went off scoring 43-points. As LaSalle shot 45 percent (10-22) on 3’s in the half, and 40 percent on three’s for the game. Such was preventable if Temple had only pressured the perimeter.

LaSalle scored 45 of it’s 65 points in the game on three’s.

For the third straight game Temple’s half-court offense performed badly, as Temple shot 40 percent on two’s on 14-35 shooting, as Temple players had a hard time finishing at the rim. Temple shot 33 percent (7-21) on three’s.

NPL led Temple in scoring with 21-points. NPL shot 8-13 at the foul-line. Rose scored 18 points, had 3-steals.

Rose has failed to make half his shots in the first three games.

Moorman shot but 1-5 from the field, his second straight bad shooting game.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
In it’s first 3-games, Temple established a 10 plus scoring margin, averaging 71.7 ppg with it’s three opponents averaging only 61.3 ppg.

In the backcourt, Nate has has averaged a whopping 4.3 steals per game, and Ala i 2.5 steals per game, resulting many easy Temple baskets or trips the foul-line.

Temple shot only 45.8 on two’s primarily because Rose has taken 8.7 two’s per game, and has made only 30.8 percent of them.

Also, Temple shot only 27.8 percent on three’s.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Temple has averaged only 10.6 turnovers per game, 8th lowest in the country.

Temple’s 12.3 steals per game has gone hand in hand with opponents averaging 17.6 turnovers per game- 7 more turnovers per game than Temple commits. Such has resulted Temple scoring more points, and opponents fewer points, as provided Temple with 7 extra scoring opportunities per game, and opponents having 7 less scoring opportunities they otherwise would have had.

With Temple about to play better competition, we’ll have to wait and see if Temple can continue to win the turnover margin by such a wide margin, and continue to hold opponents to shooting only 40.6 percent on two’s, 30.9 percent on three-pointers, and 61.1 percent at the foul-line.

It’s imperative that Temple maintain it’s pressure defense on the perimeter so opponents do not increase the number of three’s they make, nor their three point shooting percentage.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Quentin Rose has not been a very good shooter during his four years at Temple and should not be the focal point of Temple’s offense. He can be effective as a second or third option. That’s why he played better last season when Alston being the focal point of the offense last season.

In Temple’s scrimmages, Alani Moore, Scott, and Perry are Temple’s shooters. Temple needs to transition to the three becoimg more involved in Temple’s offense.

HC Mckie should not to sit back and ignore that Rose is taking 8.7 two’s per game and converting them at only 30 percent. Temple’s better offensive players should be shooting those 2’s.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
The upcoming USC game is a real challenge as USC is 5-0, and has a huge and talented front court, and having beaten Villanova in a pre-season exhibition game.

USC’s frontcourt will pose obstacles for Temple at both ends of the court. USC will try to overpower Temple inside, and thwart Temple drives by swatting the ball away. USC is likely to dominate the offensive and defensive boards.

In order for Temple to beat USC, offensively they will have to score more three’s than USCss USC doesn’t shoot a lot of three’s.

Temple also needs to fast-break off of defensive rebounds in order to keep USC from setting up in their half-court defense. Temple guards should also leak-out for outlet passes. Temple has yet to fast break off defensive rebounds.

In half-court sets, Temple needs to protect the ball, and commit few turnovers.

Temple must employ a pressure defense throughout the game, and thus force USC turnovers. USC is not good protecting the ball.

Nate needs to guard USC’s Mathews, USC’s most prolific three-point shooter.

Parks, Hamilton, Moorman, and Perry have to avoid fouling inside. This might be Temple’s first game in which they don’t win the battle at the foul-line. However, USC does have a tendency to foul excessively.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Q.Rose is taking 23 percent of all of Temple’s two’s (8.7 per game), and is only shooting 30 percent (8-26) on two’s. One reason Temple is shooting only 45.8 percent on two’s as a team, and averaging but 71.7 ppg.

By Temple winning, Mckie is blinded by Rose’s sub-par performance.

Temple needs a shooter,,and Scott has proved that. As in team scrimmages
The last two seasons, Scott has Tge second unit into wins over the first unit.

Scott played only 15 minutes against Morgan State, and took but 1 shot from the field. Temple needs him to both play and shoot more. Scott also played only 18 minutes against LaSalle, and took but 2 shots, both three’s, and shot 1-2 on three’s. In neither games, did Rose and NPL look to pass the ball to him. for him.

With McKie set on playing Alani, NPL and Rose in the backcourt, it seems there’s no way to get Scott significant minutes in the rotation

If Scott is not going to play substantial minutes and shoot often, Temple will need to continue to rely on its pressure defense for both points and wins.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Tonight Temple faced it’s first big test playing USC that is ranked 57th in the nation. USC is a 9-point favorite.

USC’s PG Weaver is vulnerable to turnovers.

Will see if Temple can hold off USC’s bigs inside from overwhelming Temple’s inside players, without excessively fouling.

USC front-line includes 6’11” Junior Rakocevic (16.4 ppg) 6’9 freshman Okongwu (18.6 ppg) and 6’10” freshman Mobley. Okongwa and Mobley both weigh in excess of 235 pounds. USC likes to play a lot of hi-low action. If Temple can keep USC’s big boys off the foul-line, game should be very competitive.

D.Moore Will not likely to play tonight. Defensively, Temple will have match-up problems, but hopefully Temple’s pressure defense will be effective, and keep Temple out of so many half-court sets which they struggle playing in.

Temple players are also going to have a difficult time getting to the hoop facing USC’s big frontline.

If Temple applies it’s pressure defense Temple can win this game.

Temple two-point shooting has declined to 45.8 percent- an indication of how bad it’s half-court offense really is.

Dre Perry has been shooting both two’s (55 percent) and three’s (40 percent) very well. He should play and shoot more.

Temple has only averaged 71.7 points a game against so-so teams is not a good sign.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
So far Temple has improved in the following areas over last season:

1. Opponents are scoring less points per game.

2. Temple has a bigger scoring margin over opponents.

3. Temple is rebounding better. .

4. Fewer Temple turnovers, more opponent turnovers.

5. More Temple steals

6. Temple is committing less fouls. Opponents committing more fouls

7. Temple has more blocks.

Areas Temple is worse than last season:

1. Temple is scoring less points per game.

2.Temple is shooting lower percentages on 2 and 3-pointers, and at the foul line.

3.Temple has had fewer assists.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Great win in new McKie era as Temple beats 57th ranked USC on USC’s home court by 9-points, 70-61. Temple now enjoys a 4-0 record compared to USC’s 5-1 record.

Temple’s pressure defense was for real against a very good offensive team. As Temple had 8 steals and forced 13 USC turnovers, that helped USC scored 19 fewer points that it hade been averaging. As USC had been averaging 80 ppg prior to tonight’s game.

Temple held USC to shooting only 43 percent on two’s, and 27 percent on three’s. Temple also shot 43 percent on two’s, and shot 30 percent on three’s (10-30).

Temple committed only 6-turnovers compared to USC’s 13-turnovers. Temple scored 21-points off of USC’s turnovers, while USC scored just 8-points off of Temple turnovers. Temple scored 13-points off fast-breaks, while USC scored but 8-points off fast-breaks.

Temple managed to have three more offensive rebounds and one more defensive rebound than USC. Hamilton led Temple with 3-offensive rebounds, Moorman had 2.

Although In expected that Temple would commit more fouls than USC did, Temple was only outscored by three points at the foul-line, as Temple shot 8-12 at the foul-line, or 66.7 percent, compared to USC shooting only 11-20 from the foul-line, or 55 percent. Arashma Parks fouled out of the game after playing but 9 minutes.

Temple was led by freshman Josh Pierre-Louise who scored 15-points, 5-11, 2-6, 2-2, followed by Dre Perry scoring 12-points, 5-8, 2-4, and Q. Rose 12-points on 4-11, 2-5, 2-3, and Justyn Hamilton scored 10-points, 4-11,1-1, 1-4, and had 7-rebounds. Nate had 7-points (3-11,1-5, 0-1, led Temple with 10 rebounds. Alani Moore playing 27-minutes scored 8-points 2-7,2-5, 2-2, and had 2-steals, no turnovers, 5 rebounds.

Scott played but 16 minutes, scored 2-points, shooting 1-3 from the field, 0-2 on three’s. He’s shooting only once every 8 minutes which inhibits him from getting in a rhythm and.

Temple made ten three’s compared to USC’s six three’s just like they needed to do. Temple shot 33-percent on three’s.

Temple next faces 15th nationally ranked Maryland in Orlando, Florida on Thanksgiving Day at 11 am.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Temple did the things they needed to do to beat USC as their pressure defense forced USC turnovers which resulted in USC committing 7 more turnovers than Temple did. It was important for Temple to
prove that’s Temple’s pressure defense could be successful against a good team like USC.

I previously said that in order to have a chance to win, Temple had to score more points off than USC did, and Temple did by scoring 12 more points than USC did.

Temple held Nick Rakocevic, USC’s second best inside scorer, to scoring only 6-points. He had been averaging 18.2 ppg.

Dre Perry was the only Temple player to make over half his fga’s, and Temple still won by 9-points. That’s how good Temple’s defense was.

Rose shot 33 percent (2-6) and shot 3-5 on two’s, which was much better than he had in prior games.

Nate only scored seven-points. Nate took 11 fga’s more than he should have as he couldn’t get to the hoop against a big front-line. He only shot 1-5 on three’s.

Temple did a better job of getting more players involved in Temple’s offense. No player shot more than 11 fga’s, and that was a good thing given how poorly most players shot the ball.

Josh, who had shot awful thru three games, came alive, and scored 15-points in 16 minutes of court time. Perry and Hamilton also scored well.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
After 4 games, Temple’s national rank is 10th in fewest turnovers, 24th in fewest personal fouls, 42nd in fewest opponent field goals made, 40th in opponent field goal percentage, 40th in fewest opponent two point attempts, 24th in fewest opponent two’s made, 26th in fewest opponent foul shots attempted, 22nd in fewest opponent foul shots made, and 28th in opponents lowest foul shot percentage.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Temple found in the USC a better formula for winning basketball games.

As Temple, increased it’s number of made three’s by taking 30 three’s, and made 10 three’s or 33 percent, which resulted in 30-points.

Temple’s 2-point percentage is very low when Temple plays in half-court-sets. Temple is shooting well on two’s and three’s off of steals, opponents turnovers, and fast breaks.

In the USC game, Temple scored 21-points off of USC’s turnovers, 13 points off of fast breaks, and 7-points off of second second-chances. Temple scored 8-points at the foul line. Temple scored 70 points in the game.

Temple shooting 30 three’s also helped Temple commit fewer turnovers. This is evidenced by Temple only turning the ball over six times in the entire game.

With that said, Temple still scored but 70-points. Temple can score even more points by playing a pressure defense, fast-breaking more.

Nate made only 2 three’s out of 13-attempts. He should not have kept jacking them up when he was off.

If Rose keeps shooting three’s at a high rate, he should forego shooting as many two point jump shots. Rose shot mostly three’s in the USC game and shot them at 40 percent. By limiting himself to shooting only five two’s in the USC game, he scored on 3 of them, a 60 percent conversion on shooting two's. Most of his two’s were scored on lay ups when Temple got into the open court.

Rose shot much better shooting fewer two’s than in previous games when he shot 30 percent on 2’s, taking an average of 8.7 two’s per game in the previous three game.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Rose is averaging 12.8 fga’s per game, including taking 7.8 two’s and 5 three’s per game. He’s shooting two’s at only 32.3 percent per gam, and shooting three’s at 40 percent.

In the USC game he took only 11 fga’s and made 5 of them. He shor 3-5 on two’s, and 2-6 on three’s. One of his best games mainly do to his not shooting excessively.

He’s averaging 5.5 FTA’s thru four games, up 1.9 from last season, and shooting them at 72.7 percent.

Thru four games, his turnovers have gone down from 2.5 turnovers per game last season, to 1.5 turnovers per game. His steals have dropped from 2.2 per game last season to 1.5 per game this season.

His fouling is down from 2 fouls per game last season to 1.3 per game this season.
.
His rebounding has decreased from 3.9 rpg last season to averaging only 3 rpg this season compared

Given how poorly Rose is shooting, for the good of the team, Rose should reduced his fga’s.

Seems that Rose may well be poised to have a fine yearby taking more than 10 shots or so unless he’s made half of them.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
In Temple’s first four games, all wins, Temple opponents have only scored between 27-31 points in 7 of the 8 halves played in those 4 games.

In the second half of the La Salle game, opponents scored 45 points,do to Temple making no attempt to stop the three-ball. In some of those halves, Temple also didn't try to stop the three-ball.

The main reason for Temple having such success is over the four games is that Temple only committed an average 10 turnovers per game, yet Temple forced opponents to commit an average of 16 turnovers per game. Hard to lose games when Temple has a positive turnover margin. As that outweighs Temple’s poor shooting.

Temple’s pressure defense is responsibly for opponents low scoring in games played. It’s pressure defense is also responsible for opponents shooting poorly.

All of Temple’s players are contributing to Temple’s low turnover rate, as no Temple player is averaging more than 1.5 turnovers per game, and Perry has yet to turn the ball over.

Temple has been committing less fouls per game than it’s opponents , and Temple scoring more points from the foul-line than it’s opponents it’s opponents has been a big factor in Temple’s 10-point per game scoring margin over it’s opponents. Only two Temple players Perry and Hamilton are are committing more than 2 fouls per game. But l neither have kept Temple from out-scoring Temple’s opponents by a wide margin at the foul-line. Plus, Hamilton has been Temple’s best interior defender, and Perry Temple’s most efficient scorer.

One can also say the Temple’s pressure defense has caused opponents to shoot only 42 percent on two, and 29.8 percent on three’s, in Temple’s first four games.

USC’s HC said in a post-game interview that USC got good looks and simply missed their shots. USC’s two best scorers, both big men, who came into the game shooting a combined 58 percent on two’s, only tonmissed more than half their shots playing Temple.

We do know that in the USC game, Temple forced USC to make 5 more turnovers than Temple committed, and to also shoot poorly from the field. Temple produced 70 points with only Dre Perry converting half his field goal attempts. But Temple was aided by the fact it shot 10-30 on three’s which is the equivalent to 50 percent on two’s.

Temple invoking a pressure defense at times in games is the main reason Temple enjoys having a 10- point scoring margin per game over it’s first four games.

The Sagarin ranking service has Temple ranked 77 in the nation, but in their recent poll they have Temple ranked 52 best team in the nation. A win over Maryland would vault Temple onto the national scene, and immensely help Temple’s recruiting.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Sometime we have a tendency to look at a player’s shooting stats, and ignore a player’s non-shooting stats that in fact impacted the outcome of a a game. As James Scott in the USC game played 16 minutes, and was 1-1 on two’s, and 0-2 on three’s, had one offensive rebound and two defensive rebounds, 2-assits, made no turnovers, nor did he commit a foul.

Yet, in the second half he subbed in with Temple down one-point 40-39, with 12:54 to play. In the five minutes he played, Temple scored 16-points to the opponents 5-points, and when he subbed out with 7:48 to play, Temple was up 9-points, leading 55-46. During this five minutes he was responsible for 7 points, more than USC had scored during the same time period.

Scott had an offensive rebound that led to a Rose made 3-ball; Scott scored on a two-point jumper, and had an assist to Rose for a two-point lay-up. His opponent didn’t score. Not a good decision to sub-him out as he and the team, were on a roll.

Wonder if HC realized he played a good game or merely looked at his shooting stats..Still need to see Scott contribute more by scoring more, but we shouldn’t ignore the good things he does.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
In USC game, Temple’s two best efficient shooters JPL (15 points, (5-10,2-5 on three’s), and Dre Perry, 12.points, scored Temple’s most points.

Rose scored 12 points on 11 shots, Hamilton 10-points on 10 shots, and Alani Moore 8-points on 7 shots.

Nate shot poorly as he was 3-11 from the field. He should not have driven to the hoop as much as he did, as as USC was to big inside. Nor should he have taken 5 three’s as he made only one, especially when Temple has four other players who are shooting three’s well. Temple did score 10 points off his 10 rebounds.

Moorman shot poorly going 1-5 on fga’s, his one hoop was a put-back off his own missed shot..

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
The Maryland game may be one for the ages this Thanksgiving Day and if Temple wins will be enshrined in Temple men’s bb lore.

Temple comes into the game with a pent-up attitude seeking respect. Temple has been in the shadows the past few years, and now wants to
be back on the nation’s big stage to stay. It starts with Philly pride that HC McKie has instilled in the players, and enhanced by how much the players from far and wide love their school.

It’s a blue-collar team that’s hungry. Has a chip on their shoulder. Team wants to be the best. Temple players fears no one. Defense is their forte. Attacking an and disrupting an opponent offenses destroys an opponents confidence. Expect Temple to go full bore. If Temple is to win, Temple must throw caution to the wind and must play it’s pressure defense the whole game.

Temple must be smart and relentless. Game may well be decided at the foul-line.

Hurricane Temple is coming to Orlando where game will be played.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Alani Moore played 27 minutes in the USC game, had two steals, and committed no turnovers. His counterpart for USC, had 4 turnovers, no steals.

These two players disparate performances played a huge role in the ultimate outcome of the game as Temple had five less turnovers than USC did. Such helped Temple play in rhythm.

Both Alani’s shooting (plus 40 percent on three’s) and non-shooting stats are very good. Often fans don’t look at a players non-shooting stats that are equally important.

Alani also commits only .5 fouls per game which results in less points scored by opponents. He also averages 3-rebound per game.

There’s no basis at the present time to criticize anything he does offensively without considering his total package.

Given that Temple is struggling scoring points in half-court sets, McKie should be creating plays for Alani so he shoots the ball far more than he is Many of the jump shots taken by Rose and NPL should be taken by A.Moore. Too many fans believe because he’s only 5’10,” it’s impossible to get him more open looks. That simply is untrue as there are many short players who shoot far more than Alani does.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Temple has scored few-points in the first half of most games played to date as Temple is rarely employing it’s pressure defense in the first half of games to force opponent turnovers. Moorman is shooting poorly.

RE: Temple men’s bb 2019-2020
Temple players are primarily junior-seniors, while Maryland is a sophomore dominated team.

15 nationally ranked Maryland has a 5-0 record, and averages 81 ppg and gives up only 59 ppg.

Maryland has not been turning ball over excessively, not does it make many steals.

If Temple applies it’s pressure defense it should be able shut down Maryland’s three-point shooting, and force Maryland turnovers, and thus win the all-important turnover battle.
