They have some fight in them but no consistency whatsoever. I applaud their effort, competitiveness and comeback tonight.

Just remember people, those of you who watched during the Ricardo Patton era.

Losing this one doesn’t even hurt they clearly are currently a better team than NIU. The lose at CMU is the one that really hurts as NIU was the better team.

Official attendance (website):

Vs. Eastern Michigan (Saturday) 1,074

Vs. Akron (Tuesday) 884

The students are back! Whoopee!

The lack of school spirit for basketball is odd...I was thinking last night if there is any way NIU can get back to where it used to be with attendance, sports attendance, feel, etc. It is starting to piss me off, we all know all the reasons why, and I hope someday we can get back to the feel of the 80s, 90s and early 00s

On that we agree. Akron with clearly better talent last night.

That’s why the CMU game is squarely on Montys inability to properly prepare the players on handling basic game situations. And/or have the the proper players on the floor and who has the ball at the end.

On a positive note 4 bench players got as much or more playing time as Daow! Daow had 0 points, 1 rebound, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. MM must be seeing something I'm not!
Sam Sheepdog had his typical game - fouled out after 17 minutes of play and missed all his free-throws. AT times I think the best part of his game is he draws fouls - except he sucks at FT shooting!
Nothing positive in the game box score, how about team stats?
Hankerson is by far the best 3 pt shooter at 46%, best FG shooter at 47% and best FT shooter at 80%. Could be a matter of shot selection as he doesn't shoot much. Even the AP reporting made note of that last night: >> Trendon Hankerson was held to two points on 1-for-4 shooting in 34 minutes.<<

Another reason I appreciate German: Someone on the team has to take a shot - otherwise we get an idiotic shot clock violation.

McCarty frustrates me. On one hand, I think his presence is vital to the success of the team, but like you said, his free throw shooting is abysmal and its gotten worse every year he's been here. I think its actually gotten worse since he was in high school. I remember when he was recruited, I watched a lot of video and researched him as best I could. Out of high school, he appeared to be a pretty decent outside shooter. He was also much less thick back then (but aren't we all...). Either way, with his bulk he's gotten worse at shooting. He still can command the paint in all aspects other than shooting at times, but for this team to be successful, he has to get better offensively and it appears he's going in the opposite direction.

As for Daow, I've always like him, but at times (and last night was one of them) he shoots too damn much. I'd prefer him to be in a 6th man type roll but at this point, I don't know who should be the 5th starter. Honestly, maybe Cochran but I'm not sure. He can't shoot either but man he sure does a lot of other things, he hustles his ass off and is super quick and fast for how bulky he is. He's a strange player regarding his body type, height, position and abilities. Granted, I suppose if he was 3 inches taller he'd have been recruited to a better program. Needless to say, I believe he can be a very valuable player in this league in the next couple of years.

That was a gut punch last night, Huskies are destined for a 7-11 record and a likely first round road exit in the MAC tourney. My biggest frustration with Coach Montgomery...its hard to name more than one or two players in his entire tenure that improved dramatically from their beginning at NIU to their end at NIU.

And it seems like they get worse at free throws.

Add in the number of times they didn't even hit the rim with a jump shot.

They were bad. It doesn't matter how good or not Akron is.

Good points NIU007 and Bork. I agree also, it didn't matter how good or bad Akron was that night, NIU was not beating anyone in the MAC playing like that. NIU has a 3 game homestand after the brutal BGSU, Kent trip, and honestly after that you could be right in saying NIU would be an underdog in every game the rest of the way. On that 3 game homestand, 2 out of 3 wont cut it, you absolutely have to sweep that

Do you think that the next Huskie coach might be already sitting on the bench? Just a thought

What was embarrassing was the wide open 3 from the corner. The niu shooter sailed the ball over the rim.
Now imagine you practiced that shot in practice. Took 5 from each spot and moved around the arc to 6-7 spots. How many shots would miss the rim?
0 should be your answer else you shouldn't be taking those shots in the first place.

But I'll continue. The bigs were slinging the 3s too and their form was suspect at best. I think 1 went in while the rest had no chance. Line drives.

Guys need more practice.

Well, at least Coach Montgomery had the team well prepared and ready to play against the big boys!

A well earned $400K.

I’m sure MM knows to sock away the $$ as long as this gig lasts. I’d be shocked if he ever got another HC position at this “level” again. He’ll find some buddy to give him an assistant job though. Maybe back at MSU.

RE: MBB Zips @ Huskies
I think Monty gets 300k not 400k also Monty probably made as much or more as a assistant at Michigan St. Somebody said who would want the NIU job? The NIU basketball coach makes more than 99% of the United States population. The women’s coach, Lisa Carlsen makes more than 92% of the United States population so I’m sure they could find many that would coach here!
