Baker Institute event on Brexit: Wed Oct 16
Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Brexit: Implications for U.S. Private Enterprise
Wednesday October 16, 2019
5:30-7:30 PM
Rice University, Baker Institute for Public Policy

You are cordially invited to a talk by James Tumbridge, personal advisor on regulatory affairs to Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Brexit and its implications for US business. While news coverage of Brexit has focused on relations between Britain and the EU, Mr. Tumbridge's talk will explore the opportunities Brexit presents for US and Texas companies, and more generally for expanded relationships between the UK, US, and other non-EU partners.

Following Mr. Tumbridge's remarks, a panel of experts in economics and business will delve further into the likely effects of Brexit on specific sectors of the US and Texas economies.

Admission is free but registration is required: http://www.bakerinstitute.org/events/2030/

Co-hosted by the Baker Institute's McNair Center for Entrepreneurship & Economic Growth and the British-American Business Council Texas.

It will not surprise many of you to learn that I played a role in making this event happen: I met Mr. Tumbridge two years ago at a reception here in Houston hosted by the British Consulate, and the reason we met is that I happened to be wearing a necktie that he recognized. It was the tie of the Middle Temple, one of London's four historic Inns of Court, of which he is a member. I had bought that tie the previous fall, when I visited the Middle Temple with a group from my law school alma mater. That tie prompted James to introduce himself to me, from which we kept in touch and which led to his coming to speak at Rice.

A great topic. Will it be a video conference so people can watch if you cannot attend?

With tonight's Astros playoff game postponed to tomorrow, there is no reason NOT to go to tonight's reception, lecture and panel discussion on the effects of Brexit for American business. It is sure to be a hit! Starts at 5:30 pm at the Baker Institute for Public Policy. Full details here: https://www.bakerinstitute.org/events/2030/

Thanks to those of you who came to last night's talk and panel discussion about Brexit. It was even more interesting than I expected -- our keynote speaker and our panelists really knew their stuff and covered a lot of ground, and the questions and the end were pretty interesting as well.

For the host team, the conversation with the speakers continued afterward at a restaurant in Rice Village, in highly convivial fashion. It was a sweet evening. Our keynote speaker (from London) and our panelists (from New York, Austin, and Houston) left with a very favorable appreciation of Rice audiences and Rice hospitality.

So sorry I could not make it. I teach Wednesday nights. Maybe we can grab a beer or lunch some time and you can bring me up.

I was reading about the UConn AAC exit and thought about a couple parallels...

Although maybe Rice’s Kinsey report is another good parallel...

You would get two very different reports on Rice from McKinsey and Kinsey yet both would come to the same conclusion: We're f***ed.
