Direct snap and FB play.
If we are not going to have a running QB, I want to see QB lined up behind center and a fullback on the field more often. Play smash FB, set up the pass with RUN. I know that's old sxhool and not how it's done now, but that is what we have to do. Of they tighten up, have your QB make play against man. GO HUSKIES!

RE: Direct snap and FB play.
We don't seem to have the OL to play smash-mouth football. I'd like to see more dump off passes to Harbison or Nettles since we can't seem to get the running game going just to get them into space. I'm sure they practiced since there were three drops on dump off passes against Ball State. Just a poor game in almost every way imaginable.

RE: Direct snap and FB play.
Maybe it's an old mind wandering, but I thought last spring someone (board poster, coach, player??) said with the new offense the QB might start under center. I've been mistook in my judgements before.

Shotgun snap is primarily a pass-oriented setup, with RB stalling a step for the handoff and moving to the QB. With under-center, QB takes snap, turns and either hands off or steps back and reads the field to pass.

These brief (and incomplete) descriptions are only a sorry intro my comment: I like the under-center. It conceals the ball better by keeping it low and close, and in NIU's case, with a QB who isn't a stellar runner, puts some threat back in the running game. With a QB like Bowers with a quick release who seems to see the field well, I'd like to see it tried. Also gives receivers a bit more time to set up.

NIU could use 1 RB, 2 TE and 2 WR as a sort of own version.

The shotgun is in vogue, but imo NIU needs to do what works for NIU.

I think our posts got crossed, but it might also apply to me too. Armchair coaching is a hallmark of a fan board, lol. Plus it's fun.

Yeah I'm just having fun. Still can't get my head around the open tryouts thing.

Didn't or doesn't basketball do the same thing? I seem to recall WBB doing that. Maybe MBB too. You never know who's out there who maybe wants another chance. If nothing else, it makes for a nice connection around campus, get some students talking, thinking about sports.

RE: Direct snap and FB play.
It would be good if NIU went back to a hurry-up offense. BSU did it during the last game and it threw the D off. NIU takes a nice , looooong huddle between each snap.
