Interesting story about use (or abuse?) of new redshirt rule.

"...Houston quarterback D'Eriq King -- along with senior receiver Keith Corbin -- decided to take a redshirt after the Cougars' disastrous 1-3 start. King, a senior, will sit out the rest of the 2019 season and said he will return to Houston in 2020. All in all, it's a stunning turn of events for one of the nation's most productive quarterbacks...."

RE: 2 Houston senior starters redshirt
A lot of this going around, I guess:

"First, a coaching change four games into the season and now a couple of Rutgers players look like they have called it a season as well.

In order to remain eligible to redshirt, quarterback Art Sitkowski and running back Raheem Blackshear asked Rutgers interim coach Nunzio Campanile to not play against Maryland on Saturday. By not playing a fifth game, the two can take advantage of an NCAA rule implemented last year that allows players to compete in four games while still being able to preserve a year of eligibility."

RE: 2 Houston senior starters redshirt
I don't see it as abuse of the rule I just believe that it is not going to work out well at all

I think it is going to mess with recruiting and it is going to mess with the season to season flow of players and experience....uH or anyone else is free to try and prove me wrong, but the proof is really not next year it is after next year and for a couple of years after that

and really I do not think it is going to work out well for next year I think any players that are playing this year and lbeing put back on second team will have a high likelihood of looking to transfer which messes with depth and messes with what happens in the following seasons

I hope the rule does not get changed it is good for injured players no matter what their class standing and I do not see a lot of threat that programs will have success trying to load up for one year much less they will not have issues in following seasons

all the more so when a coach has at most 3 or 4 seasons to make something happen and one season is being tossed away and following the 3rd year there is the issue with giving a contract extension for the "optics" of recruiting stability

so you waste one year, possibly have a good year, then probably have another down year and at the end of that you are faced with what to do contractually with a coach in their third year of a contract and probably two "meh" seasons out of three

If King and Corbin graduate this year, nothing could stop them from using the redshirt this year and then entering the transfer portal to play for another school next year.

If I was a CFB player, I would do this in a heartbeat. College is the best time of your life. You only get a chance to do CFB once. The difference between enjoying it for 5 years and enjoying it for 4 is huge. Throw in you’ll be more productive with that extra year.

These two guys are going to make a lot of money from an $EC team next year as free agents. They'll go as grad transfers to the highest bidder.

Definitely a game-changer. And in King's case, his "people" leaked out the truth...which they then did PR spin control. He's not going to be at Houston next year...and his parents are going to be rich when he plays for whichever $EC team needs a new QB.

Isn't King the same QB that started in high school over the now-Florida Gators QB Kyle Trask?

I thought King was a legit NFL prospect. Why would he come back for a 5th year instead of going to the NFL?
