New Expectations
After this game and the others...my expectations have been fully adjusted downward.

Of the remaining games, I predict they win either the Akron or Miami game, and 1 of the 3 games against Michigan teams. They finish with 3 wins. Anything MORE and I will take that as a big positive and say we over-achieved.

New coaching, a tough injury or 2, and young talent that needs some time to learn, it's all too much and we're getting worse while the other teams are gel-ling. If we can salvage 3 wins this year, I will now take that a positive and look forward to Hammock and crew learning more on the job.

Those 2 last games, home games in November, man we'll have some serious attendance issues. 7 thousand? Ugh.

RE: New Expectations
This loss doesn't do much to MACC hopes. Their play does. But this loss probably won't matter. Balls ain't going 6-1 the rest of the way. Beat WMU and Toledo and NIU can still win the West. Let's see if Hammock can right the ship.

Also - Tucker should start over Tears.

Can't help but think Tears is playing hurt, but I hear ya on Tucker, he is getting better and better.

RE: New Expectations
NIU’s had legendary players through the years: Turner, Wolfe, Lynch, Sutton. NIU’s had top players through the years: Harnish, Ward, Golladay, etc.

That void isn’t filled this year. Sutton would’ve filled it, but he left early.

The great NIU teams always had one player of that echelon.

I don’t think this team lacks talent depth, but this team lacks gamebreakers.

The 2014 MACC team would be a good comp for 2019. Offense stars were Hare, Stingily, Daniels, turner, Brown. All very good. No real super stars. Defense was Lemon, Meehan, Ford, Logan, Moore, Durante. Also all very good but not all-timers.

RE: New Expectations
Good news is this is not the 1990's.
He can recruit and still deserves a chance.
Next year should be better.
Bad news is NIU is worse than 2016 (5-7) and might be on par with 2007(That year we had the most injuries).

I expect 1 more win this year - but I wouldn’t even bet on that.

This is a team that can still win the MAC. Problem is that the coaching staff doesn’t have it between the ears right now and that has translated to the players.

A reasonable expectation.

Agree that there is a huge disconnect between plaers and coaches.
Something I have not seen in the last 20 years.

RE: New Expectations
Last years team gave up 357 yds/game on defense. This years team is giving up 363yds/game. This defense is still really good. The offense is 40 yds a game better. 322 vs 363. The difference is even greater after only 5 games in 2018. +260-348= -88 to now at +363-363=0. Net 88 yards better this year. Statistically this years team is wayyyyy better on Offense and only slightly worse on Defense. It's execution. Finishing drives. timely mistakes. It's not talent. Stop the false narrative to excuse Hammock while still blaming Carey.

I know the sky is falling but this team is talented enough to win every game on the scheduled remaining. Two things will determine the season:

1. Coaching - Hammock has looked like a deer in headlights and the discipline falls on him and his staff. Good news is this is correctable. The defense is really talented and the offensive line is getting better

2. Quarterback Play - I find it funny that some of you think Bowers is any good, he currently is 117 of 130 in QBR, very similar to Childers, he is holding the team back. The coaching staff needs to adjust and run the ball behind Steckler and dumb down the offense similar to the Bears. Carey played the way he did for a reason, we haven't had an all MAC QB since Lynch and the receivers have to be some of the worst in the country right now. Stop being a fast first team, outside of the tight ends there is NO talent catching passes, and please dont fall into the trap of thinking Tears is talented as he drops as many balls as he catches.

Bold Prediction: We beat Ohio as the last 2 weeks I have seen the best team on the field lose. Hammock got a reality check and hopefully he responds, otherwise its gonna be the dark ages all over again.

Bowers is defiantly a problem. Though he's the complete opposite of Childers. Bowers is the Spencer Tears of QB play. You can see all the talent is there but then he just plays like crap at times. For all of Marcus' short-comings he was pretty consistent. Problem is we need Bowers' higher ceiling. We have to hope things click and he gets on track. And ASAP.

RE: New Expectations
I hope this staff has been served a slice of humble pie after this embarrassing loss. Hammock was anointed the best coach in NIU history after not even head coaching a single college play yet. I’m one of those guilty over the excitement of his arrival. The way they respond to adversity the rest of the season will speak volumes to whether this guy can coach or not. If the wheels come off and we go 2-10 then there’s something incredibly and fundamentally wrong. If they fight and claw back into the MAC west race then it’s a positive going forward and plenty to build off of. Time will only tell.

I don't want to give up on this year. Not yet. But I'm keeping the long term approach with Hammock. He needs experience to grow. He has one part of coaching down. Recruiting(on paper). I can give him some more time to get the on field and locker room stuff together. He gets some time. Not a ton though. I'm hoping we are talking games and not seasons.

I need to see one complete game victory. Just one so I can hang my hat on something this year and believe in the future.

Hammock has been playing too many of his guys and they are making mistakes.

M. Love fumble at the 2. He never should have touched the ball.

Next kick he returns from endzone and niu starts at 5.

Finally in 4th Q he takes knee and niu starts at 25.

Freahman mistakes and the coaches seem surprised by this.

Last week freshman tackle had 2 false start penalties.

This list can go on and on.

THam is trying to change this team overnite but didn't measure the consequences correctly.

That was Marcus Jones who fumbled at the 2, not Michael Love. Love came into the game to replace Jones after his blunder.

I'm going to hold judgment of.Hammock until after year 2. He was left a total mess to work with. How quickly he can turn this thing around will tell all

Just stop. I know you want to still attack Carey but you have no leg to stand on. The offense is easily more talented than last years MACC team. Statistically you have zero argument. None. You’ll lose every discussion on talent.

This team is still has the best defense in the MAC. They just held a QB who averaged 330 yards a game to 34. That’s insane. And if you blame the rain how did Bowers and a talentless offense throw for 240 yards????
