Remember, this team slugged it out with Utah and looked every bit as good. When they are playing smart they execute and their talent shows. When they play dumb they look like buffoons falling all over each other.

+100000 there’s enough talent. There’s not enough coaching/discipline

+1

+1 again. What happened to that team that played Utah? I miss them.

And when you speak of all that talent, remember Sutton had 1 offer and Scharping had 3. They weren't "big gets" as recruits. They we COACHED up to become great.

And I am actually really concerned if this staff can “coach up.” I keep bringing up the punting game in the previous 2 games because that is a glaring example of the sheer inability to coach and fix that mess of a punt team. It was incredible how embarrassingly bad it still was after TWO full weeks of practice to get it right. 2 weeks before Vanderbilt to coach em up yet they have Bowers punt half the game.

I am missing Rod Carey and the consistency in coaching this team has had for over a decade.
Hopefully Thomas Hammock will improve and tighten the team discipline.
We are are at the bottom of the MAC West at 1-5!
A turnaround is still possible, but seems more unlikely every week.

Because the kept the system and players as is for the most part.

THam is ripping the bandaid off but the effects are mistakes up and down the field. Niu has not played a consistent game in 5. THam is getting out coached.

Special teams should be on notice. Don't seem to understand the rules. Starting at 25 is a good thing. Especially with a wet ball.

What defensive recruits do you speak of? 2020 class?

2020 Recruits. The 2019 class is Carey's, HAM came in too late, 2020 is his 1st class. I do like 2 current Fr lineman Mattox and Z the OG. Believe both will have excellent careers. I also like the fr dt Taylor. HAM has to get an immediate playmaker and an OL transfer this year.

Yep we will have to wait and see what Hammock can do to upgrade talent at many positions.

RE: FIRE ROD CAREY!!!
For all the talk regarding, a new, and more creative offense has not emerged. Even, when we were winning there was always a small margin for error...was the difference between winning and losing. Not going to go your way with all these mishaps,, penalties, and mental errors. Where was the energy, when things started going south..still was a winnable home game, with better talent

Takes many years to turn 2-3 star recruits into NFL players.

NIU has never attracted 5 star recruits. Four star recruits are very very rare.

The only way to get ready talent is by recruiting graduate transfers.

Bowers is a proven talented graduate transfer QB, yet he has no problem turning the ball over.

You defend Coach Hammock by using the Talent argument!

Coach Hammock plays freshman for 4 games to build the teams future and develop talent causing unnecessary mistakes that cost us close games.

NIU had enough talent to beat BSU without turnovers and mistakes.

Or are you arguing that BSU got far less yardage than us with more talent?

If we play the more experienced players at the expense of giving freshman more time
and focus on less turnovers and mistakes we can beat Ohio State.

If you recruit a talented passing QB, you need talented receivers so he can throw dangerous passes that look so cool.

Otherwise stick to the run game and short passes and avoid playing to our passing QB's strengths, by playing towards the teams strengths.

Less mistakes, more winnable close games.

Look what Carey left behind. This is as little talent NIU has had in a long long time going into a season

Think about this for a second. Who was our star or best player returning this season? We had no offensive stars last year and our two stud DE's graduated or left early. Our best offensive player was Max Scharping, an offensive lineman. We were high on our three starting LBs and two of them are lost for the season.

I mentioned this in the August practice recaps. This team will throw over the middle more which means more yards and opportunities but comes with risk. I can think of 3 ints which were throws over middle and I'm sure there were more (and will be more).

Carey's team rarely threw in middle and it was mentioned that Childers seemed intent on both not getting picked on deep sideline throws either so he overthrew his own receivers. So it kept the team in good field position defensively but failed to establish any yardage.

The Carey strategy would have beaten a team that was 4 for whatever on Saturday passing.

Saying that, the penalties and stupid play is what has me so perplexed. How can this team turn into mental morons (is that too harsh) so quickly?

Guessing overwhelmed by new coaches , trying new strategies and skipping over the basic fundamentals.
In the NFL you are already looking at someone who is more likely to be proficient in the basics and well disciplined. In the MAC discipline wins games.
As the coaches are in charge of the NIU fb ship it falls on them.
Maybe Thomas Hammock needs to either get them inline on the same page very quickly or fire someone.

I am going to try to be patient and not judge Hammock or his staff until year 3. The team beat itself last Saturday, let's see if they can get the sled pointed in a better direction for the rest of the year.
