In all seriousness, MD did warn this year would be a rebuilding year and one poster in particular kept calling him names here and on the MAC board. We’ll see if he apologizes to MD.

Definitely a rebuilding year

It's only a rebuilding year if we're better next year. What I don't understand is that we didn't see this much of a drop off with other head coach changes this past decade.

Think about this for a second. Who was our star or best player returning this season? We had no offensive stars last year and our two stud DE's graduated or left early. Our best offensive player was Max Scharping, an offensive lineman. We were high on our three starting LBs and two of them are lost for the season.

MD you are missing the point here. If you take a step back it’s still clear NIU is a better team than Ball State despite all this. Had Bowers not fell down (mental mistake) they would have punched in a TD with Harbison and been up 21-0 and this game is likely put away. Critical MENTAL mistakes cost them this game. Fielding kickoffs out of bounds at the 2 yard line from a guy who has been playing for 4 years? Heck NIU can’t even punt the ball properly. I’ve never seen so much incompetence in the punting game from ANY team before. You had a QB punting for you last game. I’m truly concerned about some of the coaching and discipline.

I think we can all agree.." Carey got exactly what he deserved"..

Agreed, on both points...however, does not answer the question, I asked.

The cupboard is not bare. Been overmatched on 3 non conference games. No excuse for punt snafus or timeouts because we are not ready. Dependant upon finding playmakers we could be 2,3 years from a run at title. I like the defensive recruits and HAM has shown abilty to recruit transfers.

I guess you could argue if its bare or not, but NIU needs significant upgrades at many positions

The biggest upgrade needed right now is coaching. But he is learning on the job. If there is any kind of "rebuild" it's Hammock figuring out how to motivate his team and install discipline. This team is hardly void of talent. That's ridiculous. The O-line is not up to recent year's, but that doesn't make them terrible. Just average. Anyone can coach with a team of superstars.

Remember, this team slugged it out with Utah and looked every bit as good. When they are playing smart they execute and their talent shows. When they play dumb they look like buffoons falling all over each other.
