This team is too good on paper to lose games like this. The drop-off from last year to this year is unacceptable. More undisciplined, worse clock management/use of timeouts. I never thought I'd say this, but we have downgraded coaching-wise

The team has heart, it lacks a brain. Hence, my scarecrow comment.

Who’s to blame for the lack of brain? Remember some of these guys are 3 year starters (example: Marcus Jones). These are not freshman out there. Why the vast vast regression in basic fundamentals? That’s what I don’t understand.

Coaching.

Bingo. And if a coach by the name of Rod Carey were coaching this team and this happened? They would be at his door with pitchforks in hand. With that said, I liked the Hammock hire and still think he will do well with his guys, but there’s no excuses with the lack of basic fundamentals. He needs to be held accountable. What I liked is that he took all the blame during the press conference. He says all the right things. It just appears the coaching staff and players are not on the same page. And some of these assistant coaches may not be the right fit going forward either. Here’s to better times ahead

Every week it's been "there's a couple of things we need to clean up" but nothing's been cleaned up. The SAME MISTAKES keep happening week after week. It's all lip-service after a certain point. And worse, every week it's the same old mistakes AND a bunch of new ones added on.

FIX IT ALREADY.

None this week, that's the good news. Only one ejection for the punch, and another 110 penalty yards. Great discipline by NIU!

TheHardWay is built on common sense, good discipline and good basics through hard work. Anyone who has spent any time paying attention to NIU over the years knows that. But despite carryover players, TheHardWay needs to be instilled year after year. You can "install" on top of that. That said, something got lost in the translation, or transition, from last year. I get tired of hearing about being "committed to the process."

I agree on the undisciplined and timeouts but what great players did we return this season? Sutton Smith and Josh Corcoran were destroying offenses and creating turnovers and opportunities for the rest of the defense. We had no offensive playmakers and our OL is subpar now.

You can't give up over 100 yards in penalties, numerous short fields, and just poor judgement and still win games. Hammock owns this, he needs to fix it.

Agreed, all that is bad. Discipline and poor execution is on this coaching staff. The lack of talent and playmakers is on the previous coaching staff.

I just think we are a little blinded by our fandom. Hammock has made some glaring mistakes as a first year head coach, but on paper, this is not a good football team either.

I beg to differ. It’s not a great football team. It’s a good one at best. We’ve seen how well they can play in spurts when there’s adequate play calling, limited penalties, and basic fundamentals. First half of Utah game is a great example. First half of today’s game was a great example. So how does a team that can play like that all of a sudden meltdown? It’s very very bizarre.

I sit halfway up the west bleachers and could hear Ball State's players across the field, cheering and yelling encouragement. NIU? Couldn't hear our bench at all. Ball State's radio announcer said a seat on the team bus was reserved for the Bronze Stalk. An NIU player was quoted as saying the trophy is ugly. Who wanted this game more? How much did emotion have to do with BSU winning the game? Wake up and get excited, Huskies!

RE: This team has no heart
I would like to know what happened or did not happen during halftime that caused such a shift in performance. The heavy rain began before halftime right about when Richardson kicked the field goal to make it 17-3. Postgame, THammock said it was a "tale of two halves."

Ok ... so ...

Is the coaching staff so "committed to the process" that nobody looks up and says "S---, it sure is rainin' out there. Maybe we need to adjust some things." Like go back to basics, take care of the ball, not get fancy, and run, run, run with some short passes mixed in. You know ... protect what you have and get what you can until the monsoon ends. How much wit 'n' wisdom does that take?

I agree with anyone who says this is on the coaches, even if they're someone I usually don't agree with. Northern is not completely bereft of talent, no matter who isn't here any more. Not a great team, but good. Agree with JoeN ... something is just not there, or something.

Theres not another Sutton Smith coming guys. To think "talent" is needing another Sutton is crazy. And Corcoran had career 6 sacks before last year when Sutton got all the attention and freed him up. He was good. But lets not act like he's a super star.

Wheres the talent? firstly AJD! Also: Hefflin, Mckie, Pugh, Crawford, Brinkman...Are you not watching the games? Where was that great talent on offense last year? Scharping. Thats it.

Most teams in the Mac have the same talent level. It's a couple of difference makers and coaching that makes them winners.

We need a receiver that can run a 5 yard pattern to gain 4 yards for a first down. How stupid is it that NIU has receivers that run a 3 yard route when you need 5 yards for a first down? You just look at the first down marker and run your play. Pee Wee football common sense.

But consistency is what makes good teams. I just think we have been spoiled by NIU for so long that we are having trouble coming to grips with what is apparent to me, a talent void

Cannot remember NIU so heavily penalized!
Over 100 yards in penalties makes it much harder to win.

RE: This team has no heart
I think this and nearly every thread this season could be renamed “we need Sutton Smith “ or “if we had Sutton smith.” Maybe a chapter dedicated to Scharping, a paragraph to Corcoran.

Smith single handily won multiple games ly, got them to the MACC. People can claim this team was a MAC champs ly and that’s pretty laughable. As of now, one DL and the punter are the best NFL prospects. This is not the same team. And with a late offseason hire with a cast of what seems to misfit coaches and players going through a change this is what you get. It’s reality.

And funny that the 2 people many would say had the most “heart” are arguably the greatest offensive and defensive players in the history of NIU, Lynch and Smith.

Crazy how that works.

That’s such a BS cop out. This “team” has so many starters that returned from a MAC championship winning team. There’s no reason to play like this. Love or hate Rod Carey, but he never lost to Ball State. This was one of the most embarrassing loses I could remember given the complete meltdown at home. 3- win team

Thomas Hammock didn't have the luxury of having Jordan Lynch and an Orange Bowl team returning his first season--Hot Rod did. We are playing a different offensive system and have lost a lot in our defensive front 7 between inuries and graduation/Sutton leaving early.

That’s a sorry excuse. We are returning a MAC championship team with plenty of talent retuning. We haven’t been disciplined at all. We lost a game we should have won. Period.

I disagree with the plenty of talent.

We still have plenty of talented players. For some reason they aren’t executing well. Go back to post from a few months ago. We were still loaded according to many. Our receivers and running backs haven’t changed. Our DLine and secondary hasn’t changed. Our LBs have had injuries but that happens. So yes I believe we have enough talent to win now. We aren’t living up to expectations.

It baffles me that some fans are acting like we were coming off a 1-10 season and our program was a dumpster fire with zero talent left. This is still a good team. Mental errors have cost them. They should be 3-2 at this point if you take away some of the dumb penalties, coaching errors, and fundamental mistakes.
