People were singing Rod's praises his first few seasons here as well after our appearance in the Orange Bowl. Then as his recruiting classes started to take over he went 29-24 in regular season play and 2-6 in the post season, and we were treated to the most lifeless, mundane offense ever because Rod had trouble evaluating talent and developing it (especially at the QB position). The upside of being a personal top 20 time is basically south of nil. However, the ramifications of disbanding the ideology of Huskie football, has set us back..and we are what our record says we are.

Heres my analogy for the Carey to Hammock "upgrade". You look no further than their QBs. Those are a reflection of the coaches personalities. Childers was a - avoid mistakes first, make a play second - type QB. Thats how Carey coaches. Bowers is more of a Let 'er rip guy. Thats what Hammock is. Carey had a low ceiling/high floor. Hammock has a high ceiling/low floor. It's just a matter of preference.

You've obviously never seen Anthony Russo throw a single pass.

Agree that Hammock has a more attractive philosophy, but winning regular season games is the real measure. My hope as an NIU fan is that Coach Hammock will eventually deliver.
Right now we are 1-4, and Temple is 4-1.(including a ranked Maryland.)
In Conference: we are 0-1 and they are 1-0.

I would prefer to be 4-1, rather than 1-4.
Similarly I would prefer to be 1-0, instead of 0-1.

It is still early, so the season is not a bust yet.

Until Thomas Hammock turns it around, this has NOT been an upgrade, but rather a sad ending to the greatest NIU FB dynasty.

What bothers me most is that we were more talented then Ball State and outgained them, yet handed them a victory due to unnecessary penalties and mistakes.

Call me a troll or old fashioned, as NIULaw sadly did, however
I prefer an NIU bouring victory versus losing due to poor discipline.

I want to see NIU not blow winnable games on lack of discipline.
I want to see both NIU and Temple succeed.
Would love to see NIU going 7-0 and winning the MAC.
Quite frankly, if Hammock gets crushed in a Bowl game, I would not hold that against him.
I wish all former NIU coaches success.
Hopefully Rod Carey wins the AAC sooner then later.
Hopefully PJ Fleck will do well in the B1G.
Hopefully Dave Doeren will keep improving.

Most of all I want to see disciplined team play return to our football team at NIU.
Sutton Smith was not the only reason why our defense has been pretty good the past 4 years.
We were never super talented on defense durring this time.
We never routinely gave up over 100 penalty yards a game.
Neither did we routinely turn the ball over more tham opponents.

We were the most disciplined and most successful team in the MAC due to continued
Coaching styles over the past 9 years.

Coach Hammock has allot to live upto compared to the two MACC achieved by Dave Doeren and Rod Carey.

Realistically I would have been content with a 7 win season and a bowl appearance.

At 1-4 , we need to turn this team around and go 6-1.
Is this possible? Given what Rod Carey achieved and left behind YES!

Will it happen if we continue to give up penalties and field position and fumble more than our opponents? NO!

I want my team to win, and I do not care what the head coaches name is!

This terrible worst start since 2007 is behind us.

Time for a turnaround.

If this does not happen , I and many other fans will be pissed at the present coaching staff.

The fact that he loves my school, coached in the NFL and might be more exciting does not give him a free pass to lose Conference games.
He blew one Conference game. He can lose one more.
If he does anything less than 6-1, I will put the blame on his shoulders!

Huskiepower2003,

Were you once known on this board as sterling1man? Just curious.

No. But I know who you are referring to.
Have not read any comments from him in ages.
Thank-you for the complement.
He was neither a troll nor an Illinois State fan, if I remember correctly.
I have unfairly been accused of being both!
See my negative rating.

Separately, Regarding Carey's record:
He was NOT ,"29-24" in regular season play as stated!
Feel free to check my stats:
2014 11-2 (2nd season) conf: 7-1 MACC

2015 8-4 conf 6-2 MAC west champion lost in Detroit
2016 5-7 conf 5-3 two triple OT loses, 1 OT win (only year w/o a Bowl appearance)
2017 8-4 conf 6-2 beat Nebraska!

2018 7-5 conf 6-2 MACC
Total 28-20! Conf: 23-9 A significantly better stat.

If we go 6-2 in Conference play this year, I will be very pleased!

Rod Carey was the head Coach in 6 Bowl games from 2012-18.

I understand that 2016 was your favorite year because NIU went 5-7 and as Minnesota arrived at their Bowl game NIU never was represented on National Television and you were spared the unbearable sorrow of seeing our team lose by atleast 3TD's on National Television!

The fact that we beat Nebraska that year and their coach got fired due to that loss was irrelevant?
Why because you expect NIU when coached by Rod Carey to beat B1G teams?

To answer your question: That year Nebraska beat Arkansas State, Illinois, Rutgers and Purdue.

I understand and can empathize that you were embarrassed by the following ,'blowouts'! Where Rod Carey was the HC.

2012 Florida State 10-31
2013 Utah State 14-21 atleast that was close so that was the least embaressing bowl!
Had We won the MACC again and got blown out in another Orange bowl both you and Kirk Herbstreit would have been pissed!
2014 Marshall 23-52
2015 Boise State 7-55
2016 Best year for you as NIU never lossed a Bowl game after successive losses.
2017 Duke 14-36 The year end embarrasment resumes for you!
2018 UAB 13-37 6th Bowl loss in 7 years. Makes you pine for the 90's where NIU never once lossed a post season Bowl on National Television!!! The good old days ??

Good news for you is that 2019 NIU is probably not going bowling.

After all Bowl games have been ,'an unnecessary embarrassment ' for NIU football ever since 2012 ???

I guess 2003 was a great year not because we beat 2 ranked teams and went 10-2!

2003 was great because we never lossed a Bowl game and almost as importantly we never lossed in Detroit!

Had we beaten Bowling Green and Toledo that year and gone to Detroit and lossed to #10 Miami Ohio on National television by 3 TD's you would have been very embarrassed! Your embarrassment would have been compounded had they overmatched us with a top 10 team and we lossed again by more than 3 TD's in another post season Bowl on National Television.

Perhaps you need to remember that Bowl games are earned.

It is always better to lose a Bowl game then not to earn one.

Id argue that point. First off, the fact 6-6 teams can go bowling, and more teams than not go bowling than dont, Id say that is a very very loose use of the word "earn". Yeah NIU may not go bowling this year, but that is more a statement of the state Carey left the NIU football program when he left. Argh, thanks for reminding me about Duke, was that the fake punt from the 10 yard line game? lol. There were so many debacles under Carey I cannot even keep them straight or remember them all.

Sadly it will take several years of embarrassment under a new coach for you to appreciate what Rod Carey achieved.

As an NIU fan, I hope you never see another such period of NIU football.

It may be a while before you nostalgically look back at the Rod Carey era.

RE: Temple
I looked up Temple's recent bowl record, the last 4 bowls. Not good, but it pales in comparison. A record of 1-3 with a total point differential of -27 points. For NIU: 0-4, with a point differential of -123 points. NIU also lost the 2 previous bowls, but one was the Orange Bowl, which was close going into the 4th quarter. But that was Carey's first game as a HC. And the game against Utah State was close, although Utah had a young, not very good QB when we played them.
