Yet somehow he is either god awful or really good when this board argues about him. It’s crazy that the Carey haters will still be trying to justify their disdain 5 years from now. Holding in a “I told you so” for that long must cause bloating and discomfort.

Agree. These Carey haters are often ittational and in many cases harbor delusions of grandeur. If NIU is not ranked in the top 25 or not in contention for a major money bowl then it is a bust!

He is 4-1 this year with a good win over a ranked Maryland team and a loss to EMU.
After several very close encounters with EMU in the last several years this was bound to happen.

Walking into a new team situation is never easy.
He may well be on track to 8+ win season this year and a top 25 ranking.

Am very grateful for what he did for NIU FB.
5 Bowl game appearances.
4 trips to Detroit
2 MACC
4-2 B1G record. Better than all NIU FB coaches combined.
Most of all a winning tecord against Toledo. 4-2
Only Dave Doeren also had a winning season against To,edo and 2 MACC.
Yes he was not as good as Dave Doeren , but he kept the NIU football dynasty going another 6 years.

I wish both Rod Carey and Dave Doeren all the best of luck.

Finally I hope and wish that Coach Hammock can adjust back to the NCAAF from the NFL sooner than later and still hold onto the hope that within 3 years or hopefully sooner, he will have NIU back at the top of the MAC.

Interesting that's his MO when we're up almost 6 more plays a game from this point last year with two common opponents...

That's likely due to the Defense limiting the opposing offenses thus forcing more time of possession onto Temple. Rod inherited a good Defensive system, and to his CREDIT, he has hired good defensive coaches to keep it going. His background is in Offense though, and he's terribly timid (aka big ole puussy) in his approach there.

Good for you for being content (for now) with the hire.

THANKS AGAIN to your fine University for taking that turd off of our hands.

Good luck the rest of the way.

SCOREBOARD: Buffalo game. 0-1.

I didn't realize NIU=Buffalo

Offense is averaging almost 90 yards more per game through this point last year.

People were singing Rod's praises his first few seasons here as well after our appearance in the Orange Bowl. Then as his recruiting classes started to take over he went 29-24 in regular season play and 2-6 in the post season, and we were treated to the most lifeless, mundane offense ever because Rod had trouble evaluating talent and developing it (especially at the QB position). He was good at recognizing weaknesses in the team and adjusting to them I'll give him that. People like to slob on his knob around here because he won 2 MACC's, but then brush off his other 6 post-season losses, most of which were embarrassing blow-outs.

Basically, he was pretty average. Don't expect him to elevate Temple to the "next level" or anything like that.

Temple still can't beat the MAC, and you know this, man.

That your offense last year was complete trash, means what exactly? It's your game versus a terrible FCS teams that is skewing the numbers.

Enjoy the gradual decline. It's coming.

Again, good for you for being content (for now) with the hire and good luck the rest of the way.

I would imagine it's a lot easier to sell Temple than it is NIU. For one thing, we have the most NFL players in the G5, more NFL players than 39 P6 programs (just outside the top 25 for most NFL players). We're just a draft class away from being even with programs like USC, Texas and Nebraska. NIU is tied with programs like ODU, Troy and Kansas.

Our top 3 commits for this class picked Temple over Baylor x2, BC x2, Duke x2, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, UNC, NC State x2, Pitt, Purdue, Rutgers x2, Syracuse, Wake, WVU, and Virginia. If we continue winning, I think we'll see more commits with B1G and SEC offers.

Demerick Morris out of Chicago committed to Temple over NIU and 5 other MAC schools.

Sam Davis out of Ohio committed to Temple over 5 MAC schools.

So he's done fine in the midwest, and he's done fine in NJ, PA and VA. We'll see if he elevates our recruiting.

I'm sure he could recruit a bit better at Temple. The question is, will he recruit better than the previous Temple coaches?

Well, it's definitely significantly better than Collins' class. Recruiting isn't so much the focus as much as development. We turn a lot of 2* guys into NFL players. So as long as he continues doing that, we'll be more than fine.

Do you mean developing talent like ..
Running Back Sutton Smith,
Max Sharping (a 2 star recruit) or
Kenny Golladay(a ZERO Star recruit & not ranked in top 3000 players in his class)?

Kenny Golladay developed at NDSU. The real point is though, name one QB who developed under Carey.

North Dakota. But yea, he was already very good there before he transferred.

Can someone explain a sane ratiolazation / or arguement that N.I.U. is in a better place now, then we were when we loleft Forbes Field nine months ago ?

We have had a recipe for success for the last fifteen years, and we decide to totally alter the recipe..in Hope's of what? We dominated our conference for the decade, and thought we could one up it, get to the next level. If ain't broke do not fix it.

The upside of being a personal top 20 time is basically south of nil. However, the ramifications of disbanding the ideology of Huskie football, has set us back..and we are what our record says we are.

For What? A huge downside, which has been realized, in Hope's of ???...really do not understand the thought process..guess success isn't for everybody

Agree that many Rod Carey haters in this board take his victories for-granted and only focus on his lost Bowl games. Could be many years before we goto another Bowl game? Could be many years before another B1g victory? Could be many years before another MAc title?

Onething Rod Carey haters can hang their hats on.
Thomas Hammock does love NIU and he will win the Bronz stalk back next year.

I am hoping against rational thought that Coach Hammock takes NIU back to the heights of Rod Carey and Dave Doeren and even beyond!
Yes I am also hoping that if he is succesful at NIU, that he remains with us making one of the lowest salaries in the NCAAF.

We can all agree that NIU football is severely underfunded next in comparison to the rest of the FBS. Even Carey was among the lowest paid. These coaches do a lot with a little.

Interesting that's his MO when we're up almost 6 more plays a game from this point last year with two common opponents...

Do you mean developing talent like ..
Running Back Sutton Smith,
Max Sharping (a 2 star recruit) or
Kenny Golladay(a ZERO Star recruit & not ranked in top 3000 players in his class)?

Well said!

Heres my analogy for the Carey to Hammock "upgrade". You look no further than their QBs. Those are a reflection of the coaches personalities. Childers was a - avoid mistakes first, make a play second - type QB. Thats how Carey coaches. Bowers is more of a Let 'er rip guy. Thats what Hammock is. Carey had a low ceiling/high floor. Hammock has a high ceiling/low floor. It's just a matter of preference.
