If Evansville could restart football, they could be in there as well.
Pioneer League Football do need to get more football and break into regions like Pioneer League Football Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, North Central, South Central and West Coast.

He's on a hot streak. It was Tarleton moving up last week.

A hot streak would be calling a team that hasn't been looking at D1 for almost 20 years, and calling St. Thomas BEFORE the MIAC actiion.

Tarleton has been a moveup speculation since 2001 at least.

Many were wondering if St. Thomas could do the straight to Summit jump with a waiver.

Let me know when Upper Iowa goes DI

I am predicting that at least one of the following teams will be in the CFP

Clemson
Alabama
Georgia
LSU
Ohio State
Wisconsin
Oklahoma

Please be sure to give me props when that happens.

City Pages has a great article on this subject in week's issue:

http://www.citypages.com/news/excommunic.../561900561

Funny this move comes during the Tommies' homecoming week where they play one of the "Cult of Losers" in the Concordia Cobbers of Moorhead.

Hmmm... and how does this effect the Great Northern FBS Conference?

The montana Schools insisted on this before aligning with the Summit group . 03-wink

NoDak is saying St. Thomas will be going to MVC. Still won't give up his Big North dream.

I think the Pioneer makes sense at first. If some big $ donors are willing to pony up, they could consider a scholarship league later. For example, Mercer started in the Pioneer and then moved to the SoCon.

UST will face financial challenges moving to D1: scholarships to athletes, increased coaching salaries, facility improvements. They currently have 22 sports. Will they keep all of them? (*note: UST has baseball and soccer, which the Summit League desperately needs with loss of PFW.)

UST will be able to do what must be done. But if they keep football non-scholly for a few years of transition, that will make things easier.

They do have some facilities work to do. Their stadium seats 5,025, their gym seats 1,800 and their baseball field seats 250.

Bold move that gives the conference access to Minnesota and grows the footprint without really stretching it. St. Paul's very easy to get to by plane. Hopefully they keep baseball, that's a major need for the Summit at the moment.

I do worry about the Horizon or MVC making overtures once they get their facilities up to a D1 level, though. I doubt the Summit's the only conference that would love an inroad into the Twin Cities.

UST to Summit
The university Presidents love having a quality school like UST in the Summit; it makes everybody look better.
Their ADs are happy that this addition stabilizes the Summit, and they don't have to play "musical chairs" looking for a new conference.
Their Coaches are probably nervous because the D1 schools surrounding Minnesota make their living recruiting MN kids.
Their job gets harder with a new D1 school in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Football stadium capacity is acceptable for the Pioneer League, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_Fo...facilities

And given that St. Thomas has a top D-III football team, they should be very competitive right away in the non-scholarship Pioneer League.

Their basketball and baseball facilities are not far behind Summit League capacities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summit_League#Facilities

Looks like a good fit for them.

Not really. "Play in front of Mom and Dad once a year" is a pretty nice addition to a coach's recruiting pitch. They're probably happy that mining Minnesota for talent is a little easier and that's also why I'm a little worried about the Horizon or MVC sniping them at some point.

I will happily support moving the Summit tournament to Minneapolis to make them like the Summit more long term. Nevermind that every NDSU fan in the world except the five that live in SF also want it in Mpls.

I'd love that too, but we all know as long as Sanford has the conference under thumb that'll never happen.

I hope they get the waiver to join the Summit league. They were unjustly made an orphan by their old conference.

Funnily enough, I don't think their basketball gym would be the smallest venue in the conference. Isn't UMKC moving all its games back to the Swinney Center? That's even smaller, like 1600.

It's an interesting move to be sure, certainly outside the box thinking from the Summit League. I think the NCAA approves the waiver considering their current conference situation and essentially being expelled. Football probably stays non-scholarship in the Pioneer League where it can be immediately competitive, at least for a while. Hockey, no idea.

Whether they end up playing football in the Pioneer or the MVFC, the question would be how successful they could be at that level. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period, but being only the 2nd D1 school in the state will bring some advantages.

Would be interesting to see where they could go with that. If they're successful in FCS then could the MAC be an option one day? Seems like they would fit. Of course, that would be much further into the future.

Problem with MN schools and football is hockey, it is an extremely expensive sport that will require a bigtime investment if UST wants to compete at a high level. Which is likely why football starts out non-scholarship. Also they see private schools like Butler and Drake playing non-scholarship, which probably makes it appealing to them.

If they were smart they would ditch hockey and focus on being great at everything else but every MN school is hockey addicted.

Why? Minnesota has a crazy amount of hockey talent in it and they're joining a conference with 3 NCHC members. It's much easier to be nationally relevant at hockey than basketball or football, and there's no way they're going to make waves in either sport as a Summit or Pioneer member.

Lots of talent and lots of competition. The only player in every other DI sport is the U of Minnesota, lots of room for growth there and that is where I would put my resources. Without hockey they could pursue scholarship football.

That said, they are a MN school so I doubt hockey is going anywhere.

And yet despite all the competition there the only Minnesota program you could call mediocre is Bemidji. There's room for another successful program in the state. I could kind of see your point in basketball, a road to the Big East is technically possible though very much a longshot, but scholarship football would hit an abrupt dead end in FCS, with no conference able to make room for them. College hockey gives them a chance to put trophies in the case that the other two sports will not.

Obviously the hockey moves could still go ahead if the NCAA turns down the waiver application and they end up going to D2 ... but if they are moving up to D1, that might increase the weight that their discussions with the "WCHA 7".
