KSU @ Wisconsin 10/5 - The Return of Sean Lewis
Coach Lewis makes his return to Madison as the Flashes face the monumental task of playing the 8/9 Wisconsin Badgers this Saturday at 12 noon. Wisconsin is currently 36-point favorites.

There's not much to analyze here - Badgers Senior Running Back Jonathan Taylor is one of the best in the nation. He may in fact, finish as one of the all-time NCAA greats after this season. The 2018 Doak Walker Award winner will make it a long day for our defense. We are 114th nationally against the run, and this game will drive that ranking further toward the bottom.

I'd love to be wrong, but the outcome isn't in question. However, for us die-hards there are some reasons to watch:
Can we limit turnovers and penalties and hang for 1+ quarters while like we did at Auburn?
Can Dustin Crum stay nearly flawless on the season?
Will Joachim Bangda get a larger share of carries?
How will our D Line perform against the Wisconsin O Line (avg size 6'5", 305 lbs)?

If Kent can score 10 on the #1 defense in the country I will be more than pumped for the rest of the season.

All I care about is the same thing I say every money game. Come out of it healthy. If we can get over this last hurdle with no significant injuries we're ready for a rare exciting MAC schedule.

Totally agree, come out Healthy. But....”not play money games”.
Where would funding for Football come from?
Ticket Sales/Attendance?? TV money?? Eliminate other sports??
Raise student fees for Athletics?? Donations??
Our student Athletes need more to be competitive not less, and without money we can’t compete with top MAC schools .

As has been noted elsewhere, very little of that money stays with football.

Taylor is a junior though no one doubts that he will go pro after this season. He had a bit over 4,000 yards rushing his first two seasons. It is doubtful he will surpass Ron Dayne's 7,000+ yard school and Big Ten record. (The NCAA record is in the 6 thousand range because, unlike now, it did not count bowl game records. Dayne had over 700 yards in four bowl games.)

That #1 defense thing probably won't last. It is a very good defense, but I doubt it will remain at #1 after playing Ohio State. Got gashed a bit late in the Northwestern game as well. If your QB continues avoiding interceptions and has a bit of luck he could do some real damage.

It will be interesting to see if the Badgers are looking forward to their game next week against Michigan State. That could work in KSU's favor.

For those travelling to the game - Enjoy Madison. It's a great town.

I think the money mostly does stay with football, though it's probably semantics. By using it for football, it frees up other athletic dept. money to be used elsewhere and minimizes the university subsidy necessary to keep it all afloat. MAC athletics are not exactly profit centers, even at their best, nor should they be. Football at MAC level mostly operates at a loss and the payday games just help to mitigate that. This year it may actually put football slightly in the black, but that would be unusual.

Not to mention these money games pretty much assure them of 2-3 guaranteed losses, so it’s hard to gain that momentum to be competitive. So even if you run the table elsewhere still only gets you to 9-3 and respectability. When other MAC schools are playing the Morgan States and Stony Brooks they’re playing the Auburn’s and Wisconsin’s. They’re a certain formula for OOC scheduling and Neilson’s is different than the rest of the MAC.

Checking MAC standings so far. Only teams above 500. EMU 3-1 , played Kentucky(lost) played Illinois( won). Toledo .3-1. Beat Colorado State on road. Beat BYU home. Lost to Kentucky . WMU 3-2
Lost to MSU , lost to Syracuse. So best MAC can do is 11-1 this year by Toledo or EMU and since they play each other one more loss( at least) guaranteed. 9-3 or 10-3 gets you a nice bowl game . Best MAC can hope for.

Money game or not this is an absolutely abysmal performance. A week ago I thought a win over the Zips was a given. Now I’d say it’s a toss-up.

Can you make a meaningful comparison between Wisconsin and Auburn? Or were the games too dissimilar?

I still think Ohio State will wipe out the Badgers in CBus, but time will tell.

UW's defense stops everyone, and no one stops Taylor. I don't know what other outcome was possible today. It was pretty much the game I expected, and I still have a lot of optimism for the next seven games.

RE: KSU @ Wisconsin 10/5 - The Return of Sean Lewis
Top Power 5 teams, and Wisconsin is often one and is this year, frequently beat OTHER Power 5 teams as bad as Wisconsin won today. The good news is KSU had only one turnover and only three penalties, just as did Wisconsin. To me, that shows discipline and good coaching. The talent differential between the two is such that the score was to be expected. They played two Top 10 teams and one Top 20 team without being humiliated, like 70-0 or some other score the media would have jumped on. Let's wait and see how they fare the rest of the way. If they do lousy, then I'll be disappointed.

+1

Going into Madison and knowing you’re going to get pushed all over by their lines and then trying to bottle up the best RB and potential Heisman winner was a very tall task. To think they went there with any hopes other than to collect another paycheck but hope to stay healthy was unrealistic. That said, what I did watch was depressing, I know Crum didn’t get much time but he held on to the ball too long and made some poor RPO reads. Never had a chance to get any flow going.

Yeah I may be hard on them, but if expecting them to go in and at least be competitive is unrealistic then what is the point of having a team?

The point is to have a team that can compete for a MAC championship, and beat lower division Power 5 teams like Rutgers, Illinois and Purdue. Sure, it would be great to go to Madison and be "competitive" against this year's Wisconsin team. But how many MAC teams in the last 40 years would be? Not many. The economics and realities of modern DI football make that unrealistic. Hell, look at the stats of Wisconsin's three touchdown win over Michigan!

RE: KSU @ Wisconsin 10/5 - The Return of Sean Lewis
I think Wisconsin is a team that is built to make games against smaller schools unwatchable. They are so big and so strong on both lines that they just dominate the trenches. If you're getting beat in the trenches on just about every play the game is going to be real ugly. Auburn's defensive front is probably comparable to Wisconsin's but keep in mind their big guy got banged up early in our game against them. I think that significantly helped not having our line collapse quickly every play.

This game was really hard to watch but it seems we got out of it healthy and from this point on we should be able to go into every game thinking it will be at least watchable. This is probably the most optimistic I've felt about a Kent team coming out of the non conference schedule in a while. However a loss to Akron would obviously change everything.

Akron and BG are 2 of the worst in the FBS this year. We will win by double digits at Infocision this Saturday.
