You make an interesting point. The AAC deal came about very quickly. However, the 2012-2013 AAC negotiations took much more time. The reason? Negotiations began in October of 2012 and didnt compete in April of 2013. Aresco would later say that everytime they were getting close, realignment would strike. So, could potential instability be a factor in the length of the MW tv talks? Maybe---I doubt it---but it is possible I suppose.

I agree.

Not happening. However, Rice and Buffalo to the AAC would mean that all AAU FBS schools would be members of the P5 + AAC.

Great point.... research dollars and academics count in the highest levels...

RE: Active discussions regarding expansion of the American Athletic Conference (AAC)
SUMMARY OF POLL DATA THUS FAR:

2/3 (66.7%) THINK IT WOULD BE BEST FOR THE AAC TO EXPAND TO AT LEAST 12 TEAMS.

24% THINK THAT IT WOULD BE BEST FOR THE AAC TO EXPAND TO 14 OR 16 TEAMS.

Media payouts are made on market value, not wishful thinking. The B1G makes a ton more media money than the MAC because the public values the B1G football and basketball much higher than the MAC.

It's really not complicated, and only "unfair" if you have a socialist mindset.

Of course, I noticed that your socialism only extends to the G5. Why not share all the wealth with all of NCAA football - FCS, D2, D3? Their students 'deserve' just as much.

FINE.

I'LL PUT YOU DOWN AS BEING ONE OF THE CFB FANS WHO SUPPORTS THE IDEA THAT THE P5 (a.k.a. the "A5" a.k.a. the FB "ELITE") FULLY AND UNQUESTIONABLY DESERVE TO CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE MONEY FROM THE MEDIA PAYOUTS NOW AND FOREVER AFTER, SO HELP YOU, G_D.

ACCORDINGLY, YOU ARE OFFICIALLY ON THE RECORD AS POINTING OUT THAT, IN YOUR VIEW THE G5 SCHOOLS ARE NOT AS DESERVING OF THE MONEY THAT NETWORKS SUCH AS ESPN PAY TO INSTITUTIONS OF FHIGHER LEARNING TO SUPPORT THEIR ATHLETIC PROGRAMS.

THAT MAY NOT MAKE YOU TOO POPULAR WITH DATES OR WITH G5 AND INDEPENDENT FANS, BUT SO BE IT.

I know that's the AAC's wish, but no guarantee they're going to get the CCG waiver. If they don't, they're pretty much forced to go to 12.

Very interesting! I wonder if it is also ESPN's wish, since ESPN is going to lose at least $5 million per year in revenue to competitor FoxSports, and will still be required to pay the AAC schools every penny that they agreed to pay despite the loss of income.

Also, interesting that it is said that this is also "the AAC's wish," because this would imply that the AAC members stand perfectly shoulder to shoulder on this point without the slightest question, variance in opinion, indecision, indigestion, or anything of the kind.

If this is true, then the opinion of the AAC as a whole on this (and perhaps all other matters of consequence to be adjudicated) could be unalterably summarized as being...MONOLITHIC...remarkable!

The whole process has been a bit less than "transparent," which is just a nice way of saying that Commissioner Aresco most understandably has a preference to play the cards extremely "close to the vest."

(If I were ESPN, I wouldn't like the sound of that...)

TO BE TOTALLY HONEST, I DEFINITELY HOPE THAT THEY WON'T GET THE WAIVER SO THEY WILL BE "PRETTY MUCH" FORCED TO GO TO 12 SCHOOLS (if that is what was meant by no waiver, gotta add a school pronto).

(But, oddly, it had initially seemed that the waiver was being sought to "obtain permission" from the moneybags dudes at NCAA/ESPN/$$$ headquarters to play a championship game in a divisional or non-divisional format, permission (from the principal's office) being required because the league only has 11 current members.

I must confess that I've got a slight beef with the AAC staying pat with 11 schools, even if it's only for a year or two to cool their heels in the Adriatic and ponder the great questions of our time.

Representatives of seemingly dozens of schools, of all genders and persuasions are practically throwing themselves at Aresco or his door (as paunchy, homely, or ordinary looking as they might be, never having seen the man), and the Commissioner cavalierly (is that a word?) is apparently tossing all the applicants aside, as if they were day-old pastries or m&ms...or perish the thought, chopped liver!

============================================

But to get serious for a New York minute, it honestly seems kind of lame to just say "no" to all the schools who would join the AAC without another word on the subject.

Simply, "no," as in "go away" (you slime!, you simpletons!, you @&*!).

Lapsing into actual seriousness, one imagines the unthinkable truth - that Aresco meant what he said (and said what he meant). There was no force on earth that could conceivably force, cajole, or persuade him to replace UConn (some call them "XConn" as they prepare to depart) over his dead body.

Exactly why he feels that way is left unexplained. Presumably, there are some effete standards (none of which can be articulated for fear of court martial), or some other foreboding consequences which would follow if any of the actual facts were to be divulged to anyone other than his staff members, ESPN personnel, or the cleaning lady.

So, let's just leave it at that, for now. I'm getting a little "verklempt!"

A little bit of "gaity" (original meaning, as in carefree humor) for your Thursday evening enjoyment, y'all!

Speaking of death...

Aresco = "life of the party?" I don't think so.

phone ringing off hook? maybe

E$PN knocking down his door? conceivably

cooling his heels in the Adriatic? definitely!

yeah but then the alternitive if they don't get that waiver is teams in the 5 team division have to have a divisional opponent played twice. That's not attractive in the least.

And a lot of the other conferences see it as a slippery slope.

No its not attractive---but its still more appealing than any of the potential replacement candidates.

It might start hurting the ability to get team into the access bowl though....

And it gets looked at as rather bush league quite frankly. Just don't see it
A CCG>2 teams playing twice. The other non-waiver solution is to schedule UConn twice. The conference then looks a bit more like a team player, helping the Huskies out. I suspect there would be a loosening of CCG rules then before the 2021 season

lol...C'mon now. The AAC has been doing just fine making the access bowl. The AAC lost UConn--one of the worst football programs in FBS. You really think the loss of UConn is going to affect the ability of the best AAC team to reach the access bowl? Thats quite a reach in my opinion. In fact, I'd argue NOT having UConn on the schedule actually IMPROVES the AAC chances of making the access bowl.

yes, because the teams would be seeing a tougher team than UConn a 2nd time- thereby increasing the chances of a loss...

RE: Active discussions regarding expansion of the American Athletic Conference (AAC)
Note that it is possible that the AAC's phones are ringing off the hook ... AND ... that nobody who the AAC wants to be calling them is actually calling them.

Don't know whether it's a 25% chance or a 75% chance, but I would definitely put the chance at higher than single digits.

Also, among those with flexibility to be bought out of either the Home or the Away side of a H/A contracts are those in the AAC who have a H/A contract before the main AAC season starts, and who had a complementary scheduled games with UConn in the original AAC regular season schedule.

And while they may not do that to "help UConn out" ... on the other hand, money is money. Keeping the UConn game as an OOC at the original date and having an early season AAC game instead of the previously scheduled OOC game might be an attractive proposition to one or two AAC AD's if the money is right.

And then add no one to the non-football side because you are at 11 which is perfect for round robin scheduling with a 20 game conference schedule. The problem is none of those schools want to join.

I don't know that Boise and SDSU would want to join as a FB only. IMO, a better solution would be to dissolve the AAC and create a new conference. Don't invite Tulane or Tulsa at all, invite ECU and Navy as FB only members and invite BYU, Boise and SDSU as full members. The latter three join Navy, Houston and SMU in a western division. Now you are as close as you could ever hope to come to being acknowledged as a power conference with an autobid to the NY6 (while taking away the G5 autobid).

I agree. They're not interested in FB only.

The best-case scenario for the AAC is probably adding Boise, BYU, and SDSU for all sports. That would put the AAC clearly way above the MWC in everything, and it wouldn't be a massive expansion that makes scheduling impossible.

Ideally we could also kick out Tulane and Tulsa when we do this move. Fewer unproductive mouths to feed, and it makes scheduling easier. But I realize that's not in the cards.

The top vote-getter by a large margin is to replace UConn with 1 all-sports member.

But who would it be? I don't see any school that stands out.

It's true that Toledo, Ohio, Northern Illinois, Georgia State, App State, or half of C-USA could plug the gap for us. But would any of them compete for a conference title in football more than once a decade? Would any of them (other than WKU, ODU, or MTSU) ever have a winning record in basketball?

More importantly, would any of them draw more eyes to the TV than the AAC bottom dwellers?

If that is the case maybe UConn FB will be asked to stay. 04-jawdrop 03-nutkick 03-cloud9 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-pissed 03-puke 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-ban 04-cheers

Use all the emojis you want, but consider this:

The AAC has not announced revised 2020 football schedules to account for UConn being removed from AAC schedules, and UConn has not announced any 2020 football games to replace their 8 AAC opponents.

Coincidence? Maybe not.

Whaaaaa???

The AAC has not released the 2020 schedule yet? In the middle of the 2019 football season? OH NO!!! WE'RE DOOMED!

No one is doomed. By the way, that also applies to UConn.

The point is, if the AAC was really nailing the door shut on UConn playing those AAC games in 2020, they could have released a new list of each team's 2020 conference opponents. Do it the way most conferences do, leave the finalizing of the date of each game for later, but announce each team's list of conference opponents for that season well in advance.

Maybe the AAC has other reasons. Or, maybe UConn playing their previously-scheduled AAC games in 2020 is still a possibility, especially if the NCAA decides to not let the AAC ignore the CCG rules that every other conference has to follow.

RE: Active discussions regarding expansion of the American Athletic Conference (AAC)
I like the idea of forming a new conference by taking the best of the G5 and independents.

Start with 10 teams only
UCF, USF, Cincy, Memphis, Houston, SMU,
BYU, Boise, SDSU, Col. St.

No service academies, no football only, no basketball schools.
