Active discussions regarding expansion of the American Athletic Conference (AAC)
(10-03-2019 06:35 AM)Fighting Muskie Wrote:  I am a fan of trying to build a national P6 by extending full invites to AFA, Colo St, BYU, and Boise St and football membership to Army.

The service academies, BYU, and Boise St all add a lot of name recognition and having those mountain time zone schools will allow the AAC to play in the late night a lot.

That line up pretty much gives the AAC a stranglehold on the G5 slot as I am doubtful that even an undefeated G4 would be able to unseat a 1 loss AAC champ.

You want to be a power conference and yet you want to add Colorado State!! CSU would be a good UConn type school for football . Check things before posting.

I know that's the AAC's wish, but no guarantee they're going to get the CCG waiver. If they don't, they're pretty much forced to go to 12.

Should stay at 11. But if they had to add a 12th for whatever reason I think Marshall, Rice, App State, UAB and Southern Miss are the only schools that would make sense to me.

I dont see that. The worst case scenario is they use unbalanced divisions to place teams in a CCG. You dont need a waiver for that. A waiver is only needed for unbalanced divisions to aid in more balanced scheduling.

I suspect none of those could garner enough votes among the membership.

And that waiver isn't a lock either.

I think that it is---but regardless---its also not required to continue on as an 11 team league with a CCG.

yeah but then the alternitive if they don't get that waiver is teams in the 5 team division have to have a divisional opponent played twice. That's not attractive in the least.

And a lot of the other conferences see it as a slippery slope.

RE: Active discussions regarding expansion of the American Athletic Conference (AAC)
Northern Illinois University will not be considered. Dekalb is too small of a market and the school keeps losing students. The school is around 14,000 students right now.

Someone mentioned that Middle Tennessee State University (40 miles from Nashville) is not desirable but Marshall University (West Virginia) is desirable. Wha-? Population matters.

East Carolina University will not block Charlotte or Old Dominion University. Other schools in the conference may.

The phone is ringing off the hook? Do you have a source or inside information on this? Commissioner Aresco has said publicly that some schools have reached out about their interest to join the league but so far no one has moved the needle. He has also said that there is no rush to add someone at this point so I don't see it happening as fast as you seem to indicate.

That ringing off the hook could be someone selling timeshares.

If the AAC doesn't get the waiver, things will change in a hurry.

1) Add BYU or Army, but if they turn it down
2) Stay at 11
3) if you had to add someone else to stay at 12, then add Marshall, USM, or maybe UAB. Marshall would be my preference.

No its not attractive---but its still more appealing than any of the potential replacement candidates.

It might start hurting the ability to get team into the access bowl though....

And it gets looked at as rather bush league quite frankly. Just don't see it

If you look at it logically, there are at least 25 schools than likely have reached out to express interest in some way--my sense is probably more. Most any Sunbelt or CUSA school would jump at the chance. Thats 24 schools right there. We know from the press that JMU expressed interest. Liberty, UMass, and NM St almost certainly contacted the league. Thats 29. Its not unthinkable that the some (or all) of the front range MW schools might be sick of Boise's special deal and like the idea of going from 1 million a year to 7 million a year in payout. Its also possible a few MAC schools might have been interested as well---I could definitely see Toledo or Buffalo being interested. So, yeah---I suspect somewhere around 30-35 schools probably have made contact with the AAC.

(10-03-2019 03:42 AM)ChrisLords Wrote:  The best possible expansion play assuming you can't take from the power 5 would probably be BYU, Boise State and San Diego State all as FB only. And then add no one to the non-football side because you are at 11 which is perfect for round robin scheduling with a 20 game conference schedule. The problem is none of those schools want to join.

I don't know that Boise and SDSU would want to join as a FB only. IMO, a better solution would be to dissolve the AAC and create a new conference. Don't invite Tulane or Tulsa at all, invite ECU and Navy as FB only members and invite BYU, Boise and SDSU as full members. The latter three join Navy, Houston and SMU in a western division. Now you are as close as you could ever hope to come to being acknowledged as a power conference with an autobid to the NY6 (while taking away the G5 autobid).

Don't worry about giving up an NCAAT autobid. Chances are you will always have at least one at large qualifier anyway.

Instead of dissolving, you could allow Tulane and Tulsa to remain in the AAC if they waive all exit penalties from the departing schools. That gives them the opportunity to retain the NCAAT autobid by inviting CUSA schools Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, North Texas, Rice, UTSA and UTEP to backfill to the required 8 members in the new AAC. CUSA still has 8 members, and can stand pat retaining their own autobid as well.

I think this assemblage still wants a presence in the NE as a travel partner to Temple and wants to boost its academics so I would take Buffalo but require their stadium to be updated and expanded to 35K. If they can't do that, then you would be looking at a ODU or Toledo.
