RE: JMU Ladies Basketball
O to P,- it's a bold statement to call something ignorant without the understanding from where the name originated. It makes you look, well...ignorant. The name originates from Samuel Duke (Duke the Builder), who was the College President when the team originated. Same way that the Cleveland Browns are not named for the color, but for their 1st coach-Paul Brown. Since you can't really have a mascot for a non famous person, we chose the bulldog, because of it's royalty tie-in with the word Duke.

Carry on.

Thanks goodness the non-ignorant folks understand the origin of the term 'Lady Dukes'.

Didn’t know what the heck a “Vol” is, so looked it up ... the name originated from [male] Volunteer soldiers in the War of 1812.

So ... yeah ... Lady Vols is so much more appropriate 01-wingedeagle

Lol, yeah there's a win. Also, OtP cited "Lady Bears" as okay. ANYONE with HALF A BRAIN knows that a female bear is a sow. CALLING THEM LADY BEARS IS JUST IGNORANT. Frankly, I'm disgusted.

What an insanely stupid semantic argument.

There is an official directive from Official Athletics Identity - Usage and Style Guide:
Quote:For naming purposes, first preference for all references to the athletics program is “James Madison” or “JMU.” The program’s sports
teams are identified as the “Dukes” and should never be listed as the “Lady Dukes” or “Duke Dogs,” the latter being the institution’s
mascot but not its teams’ nickname.

I will continue IGNORANTLY calling them the Lady Dukes.

Thanks Old Dawg, I did not know that! (I'm not alum) If we open our eyes, ears, mind, we never stop learning.
