Jerrelle DeBerry was the other Indian Hills player (same year as Zabo). He'll always be one of the more disappointing failed recruits to me. Leading scorer (Zabo was 7th) on the #10 seed in the NJCAA tournament. Tough to understand how he couldn't play more of a role for us.

In my 57 years following Kent State basketball, there are too many players to list who confounded me by not contributing more, right up to Castillo this season.

Ditto on this ... although I must admit, after looking at the 15-or so names mentioned, it seems Kent has had a lot more hits than misses from the juco ranks, all the way back to John Calloway.
And Al Fisher aside ... has any juco been more of a pleasant surprise than Anthony Simpson???

I'd put Omni Smith up there in terms of pleasant surprises. If I remember correctly the story on him was JC watched a grainy JUCO video loved him and offered him. Later found out the lefty guard he thought he was recruiting was a teammate of Omni's that was going to a power 5 school.

Damn Jermaine Marshall the 6'6" JUCO PF from one of the top JUCOs chose Akron. Both Kent and Akron had recently ordered him. I believe he has 3 years left too. Seems like someone who will be successful in the MAC.

This goes back a ways, but one of my favorite Kent State players who started at a JUCO or CC was Marvin Robinson, a 6'6" center from Northern Iowa CC. His senior season (1983/84) at Kent State they lost the MAC championship to heavily-favored Miami by 2 points, on a last second shot. He was awfully quick and averaged about 8 boards and 11 points per game.

Per JucoRecruiting.com, Malique Jacobs, 6'2" point guard, commited to KSU. I believe he will have two years of eligibility, assuming he doesn't exercise the transfer portal :).

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting 2020
Looks like Indian Hills posted it on FB so I guess it's official. The Indian Hills PG to KSU pipeline is alive and well. Two years ago Booman, two years before that Zabo. That's a very good JUCO program so it's good we keep getting guys from it.
Looks like he's got good size, length, and athletic ability. Seems like not much of a shooter but more of a slasher. Looks like he can finish with both hands and may be more on the "pass first PG" side. His assist and rebound numbers were real strong last year (over 4 per game on both). Under 2 TOpg ask so he had a great A:TO. Just under 9 ppg so not a big scorer, but on a strong JUCO team that's ok. I believe Zabo scored less than they even.
Here's a video on his highlights from last year.

Thank for the video, anti-zip. He looks like he might be pretty good. He has a nice jump shot and likes to pass the ball. Of course, Senderoff doesn't mete out playing time to newcomers until they prove they can play defense, so I hope he's a good defender.

Indian Hills was #2 in the JC D1 rankings when the season ended. Looks like most of their other sophs are committed other than one (a 6'8" PF that was previously at Okla At). He got an offer from Oregon St recently so we can probably assume we won't be able to tap Indian Hills for anyone else this year.

Do East Mississippi CC or independence CC in Kansas produce many basketball players?

Guards - Santiago, Hernandez, Jacobs, Nuga,
Need one more ...
Then one more big: Grad transfer if possible as none of the bigs on hand are 25-minute guys right now, including Pippen after knee surgery.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a traditional transfer with one of the last two spots. Sendy usually likes at least one guy waiting in the wings. Also the HS SF/PF Justin Amadi we offered last week looks pretty intriguing to me. 6'7" and seems to move well and play well above the rim. He might view Davis as a negative playing a similar position and being in the same class though.

1) Forgot about Jordan ... if back to full health (back injury) he could be a difference maker. Jacobs looks like a guy who actually could score more in the right system than he has ...
Amadi is just the opposite of Davis ... and could play the 4/3 a lot easier - especially early on - than Davis, being much more athletic. But Kent has to get him first.
Lastly, with Amadi, Kent has done very well in the past with guys who were actually third or fourth options on their high school teams like Amadi, particularly when those teams were very good; I'm thinking of Justin Greene and Jimmy Hall in particular who were overshadowed by more acclaimed high school teammates yet were very good collegians.
As I think about it, Jacobs could very well fit this profile, too. He was third overall at IHills in minutes played behind two other high scoring guards.

Yeah I didn't mean they're similar players. Just that they play a similar position so Amadi might not want to be one of two 3/4's in this freshman class. Pretty much every 3/4 wants to be the 3.
