I'm sure he has his sights set towards a power conference school, but Newton announced today that he is graduating from Howard this spring and entering the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility left. I wonder if there is any chance he wants to be reunited with his former HC and OC where he had his most success? Guarenteed we will try.

He'll graduate this May, so it looks like he'll be a grad student with two years of eligibility.

I think a few HU players (2 RBs) entered the transfer portal. Newton is a solid QB who iniws tge system...not sure if he wants to go to a FBS school or simply play on a competitive team.

Also not sure how Mathis would receive this, but I can see both of them simultaneously in the backfield.

Well, Hollis had committed to Howard with the likelihood of sitting behind Caylin for 3 years anyway. Or, as a competitor, he envisioned beating Caylin out for the job. I'm not sure if the possibility of either scenario changes at W&M. Hollis and Caylin share similar QB traits and would be more seemless than Anderson entering games. Opens the door to utilize both players exceptional running skills together.

IMO, if Caylin decides to stay FCS, we would certainly be the leaders in the clubhouse. Same goes for any of these London recruited Howard transfers.

Newton, it appears, will redshirt this season to give him 2 years of eligibility. HU is 0-3 and Newton didn't play last game.

Hollis is following him on Twitter but that may predate Newton's announcement.

"After announcements on social media, four Howard players have entered the transfer portal. Caylin Newton confirmed his interests in transferring. Around the same time; defensive back John Smith VI, linebacker Iggy Reynoso, and running back Khalid Dorsey all confirmed their intentions to transfer."

I don't think the others quit. Maybe Dorsey. The other two have played in all five games.

I have heard social media rumblings of dissatisfaction on how Ron Prince runs the program. A stark contrast to London apparently that has alienated many of the London holdovers.

I do not know all of the behind the scenes machinations on these transfer portal moves. It is bizarre to me though that these transfers are announced mid season. It certainly does come across as quitting on the team, though it seems that each of these guys have the support of their teammates on the decision.

With the new redshirt rule that you can play in up to 4 games and still redshirt, this is going to be the new normal. Players avoid burning an extra year of eligibility this way.

I think you are correct, and that IS,... crappy. The question then becomes more about what to do with the part about the player getting a free education that semester and not playing. It's a big can of worms after one year and I'm sure modifications will be made to the process or the portal will go away.

Other than Caylin, since he is graduating, don't the other transfers still need to sit out a year after they transfer unless granted a hardship? I don't think the voluntary redshirt after 4 games satisfies the transfer/sit rule. Maybe under the new landscape it does. Also, isn't the decision to redshirt ultimately up to the university?
The player is under scholarship. Unless the redshirt is a coaches or administrators decision (with the players input, of course), I don't see how the school should be on the hook for paying for the athletes schooling. IMO, it is a break of the athletes scholarship agreement.

So let me get this straight. This kid has played for Howard for two years prior to this year and has set himself up to be able to graduate in three years. But instead of playing a 3rd year for Howard, graduating in three years, and then having the ability to transfer with immediate eligibility but with only one year of eligibility left, he gets creative and decides to redshirt this year so that he can have two years of eligibility left. If that is indeed the case, then Howard should revoke his scholarship immediately and require him to pay his own tuition for his third and final academic year at Howard. Why the hell should Howard be obligated to pay tuition for a perfectly healthy kid who has chosen to stay in school to graduate in the spring but has made his own decision to redshirt and not play this year for the school that is paying for his education this year so that he can play another year somewhere else starting next year?

Let me be clear. I have no problem with the kid's decision to sit out this year and then transfer. That is his right. But he needs to be required to either leave Howard now or pay his own way this year just like every other student at the school who does not have the privilege of having their tuition, room, and board paid for.

My guess is his brother will be paying for the rest of his Howard education.

Clearly, he has the Howard Bison equivalent of "but he bleeds green and gold" going for him.

Oh my. I retract everything I said about quitting. Those boys seem to be in an awful situation. If true, Prince sounds like a complete jerk.
