Never over look safety
Sadly we lost another racer over the weekend when a competitor in a cruiser (car takes two people to operate) was thrown from his car in a crash and the car rolled over on top of him. David Lofton was competing in the Cruiser class at Old No.1 Speedway in Harrisburg Speedway when he was involved in a crash and was ejected from his car.

In a cruiser, the accelerator is located on the passenger side of the car away from the driver. The passenger operates the gas while the driver operates the steering and brakes.

It is supposed to be a fun class for the novice who just wants to get out and have fun without mortgaging the house. Unfortunately in many areas, while 5 point harnesses are recommended they are not mandatory and any shoulder harness is accepted.

Sadly this oversight cost the life of David Lofton 47 as he was ejected from his car while riding as the passenger throttle-man in a crash.

No excuse for this to happen. Not sure how the track's insurance would even cover something like this.

For the most part across the country, this is considered a spectator type class. No aftermarket parts allowed. Basically, take out all the glass, move the accelerator to the right side and let them go at it. Street tires and wheel, stock engines. Low dollar competition.

Supposed to be a fun class for the spectators to see how the car reacts when the driver has no control of the gas and cannot react by letting off when things get squirrely.

My group Memphis Racing History has come out strongly in support of changing the rules to require a 5 point harness for both the driver and throttle-man.
