Correct I believe. Not sure of the UMKC departure date though.

I don't think anyone else was seriously considering the move, were they? Maybe Commerce? That's about the only one I could see making the move, honestly.

If they're going to start a WAC football championship, I think they're going to need a few schools from the Big Sky with a deliberate understanding that the Big Sky is helping create the WAC to get more, better non-conference games.

Even a broke clock is correct 2 times a day,

Hey, give him credit. He posted a list of about 120 schools that he predicted to join Division I, and Tarleton State was on that list. 07-coffee3

I believe it was actually 311 schools on that list. By coincidence that is the number of schools in D2. How can David possibly be wrong?

Tarleton State formed a D1 Task Force in 2017, show a link where David "predicted" this move in 2016 and earlier.

I had them on my list to move up before 2017. Dixie State, Merrimack, North Alabama, Bellarmine, California Baptist, LIU merger and some others I got correct. Grand Canyon was the one stumped me because nobody wanted a for-profit school.

I believe I said "show a link." North Alabama announced their D1 intentions 3 years before you joined this board.

I do too. I'm excited that Tarleton is moving up but I'm going to miss many of our conference mates (WT, Angelo, Kingsville, Midwestern and Commerce)

Guys, if the states are telling D2, D3, FCS, D1 non-football and NAIA players have to be paid? Plus the California law includes everybody? We might see some major shifts in realignment. If Colorado passes laws for D2 schools have to pay their players? Colorado Mesa, CSU-Peublo, Western Colorado, Fort Lewis, Metro State, Colorado Mines, Adams State and Colorado-Colorado Springs may have to go D1 to gwt better payouts. We might see more schools applying in the next few years.

You don't have the slightest idea what the California law says, do you.

RE: Tarleton State is moving up to D-1/FCS
This is huge for the WAC, which can now safely part ways with Chicago State and focus on continuing to grow within its smaller, western-based geographic footprint. This also gives UTRGV a travel partner. And it may be the impetus for other Lone Star Conference football-playing schools to consider making a future move to the WAC, since the Southland Conference is already full and since the influx of seven non-football-playing former Heartland Conference members and a D-III move-up has turned the Lone Star into an unwieldy 19-member hybrid conference.

Agreed, the Franken conference has gotten unwieldy.

So UMKC is out, Chicago could go if the league can bring up some D2 football schools- WTamu, Colorado Mesa.

My question is that the SLC and Big Sky are massive for being single bid Conferences. Could the WAC peel a couple schools with football away to flesh out their football offerings and get some region schools

(Thinking schools like Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word)

That would be ideal, but the WAC would need four more football-playing members to reach the six required for an FCS playoff auto-bid. It's hard to imagine the WAC pulling that many new members from established FCS conferences, even if those conferences are oversized. At best I think the WAC might be able to snag Cal Poly and UC Davis from the Big Sky as football-only members, if those schools wanted an easier path to post-season, fewer cold-weather games and an entree into Texas recruiting.

To do that the WAC would first have to land at least two more football-playing move-ups from the D-II ranks. I see six potential candidates that might have an interest in D-I and FCS if given reasonable time to prepare (rank-ordered based on average football attendance over the past five years):

Midwestern State (7,828)
Texas A&M Commerce (7,192)
West Texas A&M (6,832)
Texas A&M Kingsville (6,229)
CSU-Pueblo (6,168)
Azusa Pacific (4,303)

RE: Tarleton State is moving up to D-1/FCS
This makes it clearer why Tarleton State feels ready to make the move to FCS:

The Tarleton State football team won its first outright LSC title last year and set multiple program records as they advanced to the third round of the NCAA D-II playoffs in 2018. The Texans have four LSC titles and have made four appearances in the playoffs.

Tarleton State opened a renovated Lonn Reisman Athletic Center at Memorial Stadium this season and had a record crowd of 10,691 at their last home game. Tarleton has also won 13 straight regular-season games and currently holds the fourth-longest streak in NCAA-DII with 10 straight wins at home.

Tarleton is currently 4-0 this season and 2-0 in the LSC and beat FCS Stephen F. Austin 37-26 on the road to open the season.

No one else in the Lone Star wanted to be the first but now that Tarleton has done it they can be a trail blazer for the rest.

There’s probably a half dozen Lone Star schools who could make it in the WAC.

I wonder if the WAC goes in the direction some here speculate (West Texas, NAU, A&M Commerce, etc) if Seattle would start looking for an out. It would become a conference of mostly state schools in the southwest, which SU doesn't really fit in to. I assume their dream is the WCC, but I don't think they want Seattle.

They blazed a relatively easy trail into full Southland membership.

Tarleton St, and anyone who follows, will be joining a WAC that has not yet built a stable FCS conference.

Essentially what the WAC has now is 2 D2 to FCS call ups sitting in wait for membership in the Big Sky and Southland. If the WAC wants to retain those schools they need enough FCS football schools to be a viable FCS league.
