California passes law that allows college athletes to get paid
https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/30/sport/cal...index.html

So,the obvious issue: a state can pass any law the Legislature wishes, but what about the NCAA eligibility issue?

The article only states that "the NCAA agrees changes are needed to continue to support student-athletes, but improvement needs to happen on a national level through the NCAA's rules-making process." That sounds like the NCAA saying that is fine California (and other states), but we decide if the student-athlete remains eligible. There are all kinds of legal issues with this, so we will see how this plays out.

How might this affect G5 v. P5 down the road? Because this law allows college athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness, it may help G5 programs; a good player on a P5 team may get more publicity at a G5 program - the big fish in a smaller pond type of deal.

This would be another way to separate the haves from the have-nots. If this were to ever become reality, then NIU would REALLY need to schedule all OOC games with whatever schools will pay the most. If they desperately need money now to try to keep their head above water, just wait until they have to pay the players.

Probably would result in NIU and the MAC dropping to FCS.

This will not be a popular statement but it could be argued that FCS might be better than clinging to the bottom rung(s) of the FBS by our fingernails and absorbing all of the **** that flows downhill.

Wait, wait wait...think about this for a sec. The school isn't paying the athlete. Sponsors are. I would think only high 4 star and 5 star recruits would think they have an endorsement worthy college career ahead of them. So this might hurt Bama, Clemson, Ohio State...etc if 5 star guys choose a California school to get paid. Our recruits would most likely not be affected. And if it goes nationwide eventually, the top G5 guys will get paid. A guy like Sutton or Lynch may have gotten paid. You may find high 3 star/low 4 star guys realize their best endorsement opportunity is absolutely crushing it with huge stats at a good G5 and not languishing on the bench at a good P5.

I thought a scholarship was money. Why not pay them in season 8 bucks an hour to help offset living expenses? I for one am not a fan of this at all. High School athletes should be paid!!!! What next, this $hit never ends.

It’s not about the school compensating athletes. It’s about the ncaa blocking students from getting paid outside of school from the use of their name or likeness.

Sounds really messy for college sports. Not necessarily bad for NIU.

Thank you for the clarification. I am a believer that the NCAA stinks, but at the same time not sure how I feel about young kids getting big bucks while in college. Smarter people than me will screw this all up.

No surprise as Ohio State is one of the schools with the most to lose.

Cal lost it's starting QB last weekend. And now you can get paid for playing in California.

Poor Ross Bowers, he's just missed some golden opportunities!

What a joke. How can anybody be against this?? So everyone is okay with the NCAA soaking up billions of dollars each year only to chew and spit out each and one of the college athletes that they use? And don't say that its okay because they have a full ride scholarship for school. Everyone knows that NCAA athletes (specifically football/basketball players) are not normal students and they provide TONS of revenue for each school they play for. Who cares what they do on the side to earn some cash if somebody is offering it?

And Ohio St is a f*cking joke. More and more states are enacting this so are they just going to start not playing schools in each and every state that passes this?

So of course there’s way to leave most of the G5 out of this. At least in the California fair pay act. In Cali universities must have $10 million in media rights revenue for this law to apply. Not sure what NIUs is but I doubt it’s that. Hopefully the Illinois law won’t have that stipulation.

RE: California passes law that allows college athletes to get paid
I bet NIU would get some 5* recruits if this passed in Illinois!

Just think of the money Pizza Villa and Sycamore Ford will be throwing at athletes!!!!!!!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Those for this, explain to me...

-How limits would work, especially state to state, if there is one. Can 50 different businesses pay the same athlete?

-What would stop a whole team from getting paid?

-What stops a donor from loading up a non-revenue sport?

-What stops donors from "promising" a HS athlete a deal? And don't tell me"the law."

-Does anyone really think this evens the playing field or just the best athletes at the schools with $ deserve the most money? Those of you who despise the P5, Illness think this makes it better?

-And in the end, does anyone really think $ will be equal across the board be it to start or years down the road? States will keep changing laws to compete.

Imagine a team with 4 players driving Maserati's to practice while everyone else is scraping $20/week together so they can go out on Friday night. Bizarre, so divisive I would think.

Well then those players "scrapping" should advertise themselves better so that they could buy a Maserati? This has nothing to do with schools paying players....
