According to this article (no idea about how accurate it is), his buyout is $15mil after this season and $12.5mil after the 2020 season. It doesn't get below $10mil until after the 2022 season, by which point he'll have either turned things around or turned VT into Rutgers-Blacksburg.

The situation reminds me a lot of Tennessee. You push out a legend for not living up to the standards that legend set, make a bad hire and are now facing the abyss. Not a great position to be in.

Weirdly, Tennessee is also a beneficiary in a very similar circumstance, but in basketball. Texas turfed Rick Barnes for not getting them to the next level despite many years of sustained success, Tennessee hires him and they quickly become a national power while Texas hires the hotshot mid-major coach, and if Shaka doesn't do it this year, he's most likely boned.

If you replace Bobby Wilder, it had better not be by Mike Rhodes.

The best underrated head coach available right now is Coach Klein who won the Bourbon Bowl. Coach Klein took an unemployed 31 year old freshman and turned him into a sacking machine. 07-coffee3

So what P5 coaches are out there that are on the hot seat that need a fresh start or what up and coming FCS coaches are out there? I could also see poaching away a coach from a peer conference. ODU is a good job with the talent in the area, new stadium, good place to live to name a few reasons.

P5s:
Manny Diaz - Miami
Justin Fuentes - VT
Willie Taggert - FSU
Chris Ash - Rutgers (fired)
Lovie Smith - Illinois
Chad Morris - Arkansas
Will Muschamp - South Carolina

BTW - BW was ranked the 103 best coach in FBS (down from 94 the year prior) in the spring. He is not trending the right direction with 1 winning season in 6 FBS years. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-foo...7va92s3q0o

RE: Who could replace BW?
I don't understand this thread ..... if it was for head cheerleader for ODU, I think that BW is irreplaceable. for Dogcatcher, maybe some tight competition. For head coach, I think that a reputable FBS offensive coordinator, FBS defensive coordinator, or a successful coach looking to take a new challenge. Kidding aside, I don't think that BW has the necessary skill set to be a successful at the FBS level. PERIOD. I hoped, but that was misplaced optimism.

Made $1,4MM as head coach for ECU; Makes $575K as the OLB for Oklahoma.

What exactly would you like to say to him?

Larry Fedora? I think he had some success at So Miss before going to UNC. But perhaps too much baggage from his last 2 years in Chapel Hill.

I would no longer support ODU FB.

Many ECU fans credit Lincoln Riley with McNeils success. Once Riley left things started coming undone.

I’d like Wood to say to him, come be the ODU coach for $850,000.

I don't think an FCS coach is the answer right now. A common complaint is lack of FBS coaching experience. I think that's why we should go after an up and coming OC or DC. Not sure how I feel about grabbing a head coach from a P5 down on his luck. Seems to have worked for FAU for the most part.

That's the thing about the rabid VT fanbase, there is going to be someone pissed off enough about what he is doing (or not doing) in Blacksburg that can feasibly write that check.
