I guess a stellar 59-31 win over Ole Miss screams #1 in the country!?!

The problem that Clemson has now is that while yes Clemson has more #1 votes in coaches, and near the same in AP- a voter who has Clemson #1 likely still has Alabama #2. BUT the same can't be said in reverse. I'd be sure in some ballots Clemson is at least #5 if not maybe even lower...

Also, it was 52-17 entering the 4th quarter. Ole Miss scored a garbage TD with 5 seconds to go. So yeah, pretty stellar.

Well the "stellar" part was actually sarcasm. I mean it's Ole Miss so does it matter if it was 100-0?

Also, Florida belongs below Penn State, Iowa, Boise State and Wake Forest, IMHO.

Top 4...

1. Auburn
2. Ohio State
3. Georgia
4. Clemson

I have SMU in the top 10 too.

Alabama is currently 6 with plenty of opportunities in the future.

Looking at Sagarin ratings, Clemson's SOS is 32 to Alabama at 46. A difference, but not that much. And Alabama has looked far more impressive than Clemson, no having to defend a 2 point conversion vs UNC from possibly losing. Sorry, but there is more to things than just SOS when it's only 14 spots seperating.

Yeah. SMU has already beaten Arkansas St, North Texas, Texas State, TCU and USF. Florida would be lucky to go 3-2 against that lineup.

You're right, there are more to things than just sos. To this point though I think how I see it, it's very accurate.

Just like Florida being #10. Why should a team get credit for beating a top 10 Florida team? They are not close to being top 10.

Clemson will drop some with their schedule. Alabama, as long as they win will be top dog.

Polls are a very lazy system. There should be MAJOR changes week to week in them.

To this point of the season it's assumptions vs. Facts, I'll go with the latter to this point.

Alabama looks better to the naked eye IMO.

Really, it doesn't matter though. Being a 2 seed might even mean a more favorable matchup in the playoffs (like getting an undefeated ND in the playoffs rather than a pretty good one loss Oklahoma)

Well it was 38-10 at halftime and 52-17 at the end of 3. Alabama wasn't on a pace to 100, but were on a pace to 70+.

actually this is a year where I think it is a huge difference. Between playing in Atlanta and in Arizona.

Good point on the locations. Hadn't thought of that. I was mainly thinking about last year where Clemson got the better draw despite having the worse seed.

Alot of teams would look pretty good with Bama's schedule. They play 2 good teams this year, that's it

Most teams have played a tough game at this point

And that's 2 more than Clemson plays. 3 when you include the CCG.

Clemson's schedule hasn't been that much tougher than Alabama's, and they've looked far worse.

RE: Alabama #1, SMU ranked for first time since Death Penalty
Some things that were going on the week of October 21st, 1986, the last time SMU was ranked in the AP Poll:

1) It was the AP top 20 poll, not top 25. SMU was #18. Miami was #1. Other teams that were in the top 20 that week that are also in the top 25 this week:

#2 Alabama, #4 Michigan, #5 Oklahoma, #6 Penn State (eventual champion), #7 Auburn, #8 Washington, #10 Texas AM, #11 Iowa, #12 LSU, and #16 Clemson. The only teams that were in that week's top 10 that are not ranked right now were #3 Nebraska and #9 Arizona State. The more things change ....

2) Ronald Reagan was President, and would be for another 2 1/2 years. The USSR still existed and nobody had any inkling it would ever not exist.

3) I was 22, a senior at USF. USF wouldn't have a football team for 11 more years, so my dorm hall was filled with Miami, Florida, and FSU banners.

4) The #1 movie was "Crocodlle Dundee", the #1 album was "Fore" by Huey Lewis and the News, and the #1 song was "When I Think of You" by Janet Jackson.

5) October 21st, 1986 was 12,032 days ago, or 1.039 Billion seconds ago.

being a baseball fan, the game that knocked them out of the top 20- vs Texas was played on October 25. That was the same day as the Bill Buckner misplay for the Red Sox in game 6 of the World Series.

That's a great touchstone. I remember watching that game, including Buckner's misplay, in my USF dorm room. My friend and I were amazed by what happened, when there were 2 outs in that last Met's at-bat, the Red Sox literally had a 99% chance to win the game.
