They could have just bought a couple of these

One Thermacell unit covers a 15 square foot area. It wouldn't take many to protect the 35-40 people who will actually go see this game.

The TV arrangements for USF/UConn have not yet been finalized so that is unknown.

Probably far more have died falling down the stairs.

Its actually 10 people and some cities in Michigan have cancelled outdoor evening events as well due to the threat of EEE. 3 horses have died in Northeast Ohio from this as well recently.

I don't go in the woods without mine.

The fact that whoever invented the Thermacell hasn't been awarded the Nobel prize is a crime against humanity.

Looks like it. USF @ UConn will be streaming only on the CBS app, as Tulane @ Army is airing on CBSSN at the same time.

CBSSN is now airing games at 11 AM, 2:30 PM (Air Force @ Navy), and 9:30 PM (Boise @ UNLV, all Central). Nothing replacing what would have been the 6 PM USF/UConn kickoff.

A rerun of the USF / UConn game was shown in the original time slot so the UConn fan that showed up for the game could watch it again before UConn cancels the FB program. He was hoping to spot the Conflict Trophy from any aerial views that might be shown. The night empty stadium shot of the trophy at mid field with all the stadium lights on was precious to him. 04-jawdrop 02-13-banana 02-13-banana 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao COGS COGS COGS 04-cheers

RE: USF @ UConn kickoff switched due to Mosquito threat
For the last month, due to Triple-E, the Rhode Island Dept of Health has correctly (in my opinion) advised that all outdoor school sports (practices and games) be completed by 5pm or so. Many specifics towns have altogether banned playing after dusk.

Southeastern Massachusetts schools, from Fall River to New Bedford at least, have banned sports after dusk. Some towns have resisted in specific cases for whatever reason.

In Mass and RI, a handful of people have died (maybe 5 in Mass and 2 in Rhode Island), and dozens have been infected. From what i understand, those who have been infected and survived have had or can have serious after effects... neurological problems, palsies, etc..

It's a probability thing... walking your dog to take a dump for 5 minutes is probably fine. Sitting for 5 hours (tailgating + game) at a football game increases the danger of exposure and infection a lot.

And yes, it can affect anyone, though the elderly and children are at highest risk. Kids and the elderly go to sporting events.

I really can't understand the resistance to taking sensible precautions to try to avoid the risks of a potentially deadly disease. And the inconvenience is what? Some UConn fans in Stonington or Pawcatuck have to get on the road a little earlier than expected?

I think it's the probability involved. About 10 people have died of EEE in the USA this year. That's an extremely small number. I think last year, about 30 Americans died from TV sets in their house falling on them. Fifteen were killed by falling vending machines.

IIRC, fatal car wrecks are 3x more likely at night than during the day, but they don't switch night games to day games because of that.

But 7 people have died within a 20 minute drive of Providence in the past 5 weeks. So nationwide numbers are kinda irrelevant. Like, i'm not worried about a bison attack in Rhode Island, but i'd still advise someone at Yellowstone to not try to feed one of them. And i'd still advise people not to rock vending machines either.

They could have just advised everyone to wear bug spray.

This is ridiculously stupid.

There is a local to New England heightened level of threat. Rather than do nothing and potentially risk exposure to thousands of people (bug spray doesn't mean they all go away, and if everyone wears it they'll still get through), they did literally the bare minimum by moving a game that wasn't going to be watched by many people anyway.

This would be like saying "there's a cobra in the office. No one has been bitten yet and we doubt it'll go out of its way to bite people. We're just going to have everyone go in today and tell them to just stay away from it."

Fair point about the concentration of cases. Here is what the CDC said about the distribution of cases as of October 1st, the time the USF-UConn game was moved:

"Of the 31 cases confirmed as of October 1, 12 have been in Massachusetts, nine in Michigan, three in New Jersey, three in Rhode Island, two in Connecticut, one in North Carolina and one in Tennessee, according to CDC spokeswoman Maggie Silver."

So Connecticut, while close to MASS and RI, hasn't exactly been the hot-spot. And even considering the population of Connecticutt alone, three cases isn't large. That's three out of what, three million?

And your analogy about feeding bison or rocking vending machines isn't quite the same as merely being in the area of mosquitoes. Maybe the equivalent would be covering yourself in hot blood or something that is especially likely to attract them? I wouldn't recommend that to anyone either.

Also, as I said, there are other factors that don't prompt moves, like car wrecks after night games vs after day games.

Stupid is a bit harsh for the right of free people to make a choice. The problem with Nanny State hysteria is that 7 cases in a population base of a couple of million is still statistically small. It's not great enough to prevent the FDA from approving pharmaceuticals, but it would require a warning.

In this case a warning would have been sufficient for a free people to make an informed decision and to accept the consequences of them.

When fear of a remote possibility becomes a justification for the stoppage or altering of major societal events the attendance of which should be left up to the individual then the state, or city, or county, has overstepped its authority.

Now if a terrorist threat is made against the stadium that's a different matter, but one that requires immediate evaluation in advance of the event and heightened security.

If ebola breaks out, or a strain of influenza that is lethal and highly contagious, that's a different matter.

But this is a classic overreaction to a relatively minor health threat that requires no more than a warning.

The only justification for the movement of the game is another fear, fear of liability by the University. And I've seen the overreaction on that account at many schools. And I don't blame that on anything but lawyers. Fear of lawsuit has led to a long list of inconveniences that arise when those who are fearful of litigation erect barriers to enjoyment of life. It's my life, I prefer to assess my own risks. I also prefer to enjoy life, rather than to live in constant fear of remote threats.

Last year 1% of the population of the U.S.A. died in highway accidents. That's far less random than mosquitoes but much more deadly to the general population. Yet we still sell cars, and getting a driver's license is much easier than it was 50 to 60 years ago when you were forced to take a ride with a State Patrolman in an automobile with a standard transmission, which you had to start on hill, operate in normal traffic conditions, and parallel park. My daughters had to drive around the license facility and park between two orange cones. I was appalled.

But this is yet another giant step into the lunacy that now reigns supreme.

The stupidity is in the overreaction to such a nebulous threat when you do things everyday which are far more likely to take your life. I think it's past time you considered "The pursuit of happiness" as juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Nanny State and an overly litigious society. I still like New Hampshire's motto. "Live free or die!"

Meanwhile, in a normal world:

Human 1: "Hey, cuz of Triple-E, the UConn game is at 1pm Saturday. I can pick you up around 10am and we'll get over to tailgate at Renschtler by 11."

Human 2: "That sounds good. I'll buy snacks".

Human 1: "Great, see you then."
