Chris Ash should not be surprised to be shown the door...

8-32

Greg Schiano on their radar?

Bruce Feldman reporting that Greg Schiano, Jim Leavitt, and Butch Jones have already been contacted about Rutgers. Football Scoop reporting that Schiano quit the Patriots DC gig after one month in March specifically to be available. Lord help whoever ends up taking that job.

Ash should have been gone last year. About F'n time!!! Worst Rutgers coach of my lifetime. At least Shea was a good coach, just couldn't recruit, and his players liked him. Ash failed at every level.

Ash was bad, but should Rutgers just tap Schiano now because he made himself available, I think it’s just another tell for the kind of dumpster fire Rutgers is. It’s worse than a lame duck interim. Ash was a total dofor. Not feeling bad for him, but, yikes, that is a directionless place right now.

Canning both the coach and offensive coordinator is pretty much giving away you have a guy in mind who has his OC lined up with him.

Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State mentioned as a wild card candidate for RU.

Sounds like wishful thinking. Miss State is a better job, no reason for a head coach to leave there for Rutgers unless he's about to be canned.

Schiano will naturally be linked to (and favorited) for the job, but I would also guess that Al Golden and Dave Clawson will also be connected as well. All have strong NE ties and have experience and success in building competitive programs. Clawson appears to be making $1.8 million per year at Wake (Ash was making over $2 million). If Rutgers can increase the pay to $2.5 or higher, especially with their B1G payouts, I'm guessing they could pry Clawson away from Wake.

I would think if I were Clawson I'd be looking for something a bit more promising than Rutgers.

I think Rutgers may be forced to hire either a young guy or a bounceback guy like Golden(or Schiano).

Absolutely. Virginia Tech might open up for Clawson, just as one example. For that matter, it's easier to win at Wake Forest than at Rutgers.

Fuente has a $15 million buyout, so that's hard to envision.

VT's AD should be fired for agreeing to that buyout.

Chris Ash fired from Rutgers

Ash had to go. Year four is looking like a 2-10 season, to follow-up on a 1-11 outing last year. Two brutal shoutouts in B10 games and an underwhelming effort against a very mediocre BC just does not show the significant improvement the Pat Hobbs said was the bar for Ash to keep his job. With that blowout loss to UM, Ash became the lossingest coach in RU history and sad to say that wasn't even the worst loss UM had laid on Ash in the last four years. I'm sure As his a nice guy, but he did not understand the culture of either Rutgers or New Jersey and he did noting to win over the any of the powerful high school coaches. He brought that bland, boring midwestern personality into gregarious New Jersey and became a complete flop. He couldn't recruit, couldn't develop talent and worst of all couldn't win over the fanbase. During his tenor season ticket sales fell from 40k+ to 15k. Early projections for 2020 were 10k, if Ash was to stay.
For Hobbs, firing a coach during the season is an unprecedented move. Which shows just how bad the situation was. He is a numbers guy, so he had have seen that keeping Ash was hurting the bottom line even more than firing him and having to eat the $8m in guaranteed salary still owed.

I agree, though during his career Clawson has mostly taken over meh teams (Wikipedia shows that the four programs he's coached at went a combined 16-30 the seasons before his arrival, none above .500). He seems to like (and thrive at) programs with low expectations; I don't think he goes to a dumpster fire like Rutgers when he has a great thing going on at Wake Forest, though it wouldn't surprise me since he is a northeastern native.

Btw, Ash is the perfect name for a coach who's leaving the program in the state it is. Reminds me of the "when Gotham is ashes you have my permission to die" from the last Dark Knight movie.

Might not be so farfetched. He's a Northeast guy that had a great run at Fordham right nearby Rutgers as both player and coach, and then assistant at Penn State, and before that assistant at UConn. He might like the opportunity to get back nearby NYC and the idea of turning around Rutgers into a contender which would give him legend status in these parts like Schiano has.

Dan Mullen actually was close to taking the job year a few years ago, but Rutgers refused to increase the budget for him and his assistants.

I read some where that Rutgers was interested in re-hiring Shiano. I don't think that would be a bad move.

I don't disagree, but at the time of Fuente's extension he was considered a target by blue blood P5 programs.

Looks like VT is stuck with Fuente for the foreseeable future based on his very favorable buyout terms. The VT AD is the same AD that hired Tommy Tuberville when he was at Cincinnati. Not good.

Quote:If Fuente is fired before his contract expires on Dec. 15, 2024, he is owed a buyout, which doesn't fall under seven figures until 2022:

After the 2018 season: $15 million
2019: $15 million
2020: $12.5 million
2021: $10 million
2022: $7.5 million
2023: $5 million
2024: $2 million

Ouch!

Rutgers being in the same division with Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State is not helping things either. Whoever is the coach at Rutgers, he will have at least three guaranteed losses in the East every year. That’s the price they have to pay for being rescued from the sinking Big East. If I was Rutgers, I’d use that Big Ten money once they get their full share in building a strong men’s basketball program.
