RE: The 2019 Official Fire Coach Wilder Thread. Anniversary Edition.
An assistant coach recently told one of my friends that he wouldn't be in the area if they didn't finish at least 6-6 this season. Sounds like the expectations have been clearly articulated. The latitude for poor performance has ended. It's show time for the coaching staff!

This news pairs very well with the information I recently received that the next big fundraising push will be for coaching salaries.

We should remember that Duke is very fortunate to have Coach K now because its athletic director had patience and foresight than most the fans who wanted him fired.

Coach K is forever loyal to Duke, BW would be out of here with any consistent success, the Temple job after our bowl win he was ready to jump ship.

Our offensive coordinator was asst head coach at va tech. He might be convinced to stay as head coach if BW is gone.

I hate it for the assistants, because they all sound great and came into a tough situation. BUT, I think this is actually good news. And if we were to start out 1-6, I'd be happy to let one of the assistants take over and have a live audition for the job. That said, I'd love to see us win at least six and go bowling. That would shut up a lot of folks for a while, including me.

After USA Today and ESPN mentioned his name. HM at the VA Polit "Two sources at ODU then confirmed to The Virginian-Pilot that Wilder met with representatives of Temple last week while on a trip to New York."

Was it true probably not, media hype? Most likely. His agent leveraged a 9-3 season, bowl bid and a possible Temple opening and asked ODU for over 800k a year for him before rumors settled.

Ok, but that doesn't mean "BW would have been out of here."

If Bobby can beat VT again.... (and maybe UVA), I’ll want a statue!!

Otherwise it’s passive aggressive to start an Official Fire Wilder thread, then vote that you want to keep him. Typical SB! lol

I think you mean tight ends coach/running coordinator. Brian Scott has never been and would never have been asst head coach at VT

As to the poll; I am surprised that the "Fire Him" is leading and the "Do nothing" is lagging. I would have expected the numbers in those categories to be be reversed.

We've lost a lot more than we've won the last few seasons. No fan base would tolerate that and not want a change in a HC. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. What will be a surprise, at least to me, is if we have a winning record this season. If that happens then BW won't go anywhere and none of this will matter.

I get that a lot of people here like him and he's done a lot of good for the program, but he needs to start winning some games and be competitive in our conference.

"A lot more." We are 30-31 in FBS.

6-6, bowl game, two season where the last game determined bowl eligibility. 1 season at 4 games under .500.

The results are not where we want to be, common among startups. But, we certainly haven't lost a lot more than we've won.

Fair enough. So 1 bowl game every 5 years, 0 conference championships and a .500ish record is good enough? Even the bowl season we got blown out in the 3 losses we had (it was a great season though, I'm not taking anything away from that).

Am I just being impatient and/or illogical in thinking we should be better than a .500 team?

Well if you do a little digging nothing is what it seems to be. We have won what? 4 games vs teams with a winning record during our FBS tenure. Rice, LT, UNT and EMU in bowl. Lets see the losses we have suffered. UNC Mercy rule(Techically FCS, but terrible publicity), spanking from WKU, Humiliation both times from App not to mention embarrassing performance at Luhbutty. This is his glowing resume. The only bright spot is his win vs a bad VT team got us more publicity than we could by winning out the season so i give him that.

30-31 sounds ok, right?

Let's look at this in a different way. Versus FBS competition we are 25-31.

2014 5-6
2015 4-7
2016 9-3
2017 4-7
2018 3-8

Of those 25 FBS wins, only 4 (in 5 seasons) have been against teams with winning records, 2 of those 4 being from the Heinicke led 2014 season. (LT, Rice)
The others were FIU in 2017 and UNT in 2018
Even the vaunted VT win was against a VT team that ended the season with a losing record.

During our, what now appears to me to be anomalous (at least with respect to defense), 2016 season we did not have one win against a team with a winning record.
More often than not, our losses to +.500 competition are blowouts.
Further, of our two best seasons:
2014 was led by mostly FCS players.
2016 was led by FCS QB David Washington and FCS WR Zach Pascal.

You missed the part that said "the results are not where we want to be"

Whether we are or aren't, we haven't "lost a lot more than we've won."

Bottom line is we've been one of the most successful startups in history. However, we are getting out of the startup phase soon and the results are going to have to reflect that.

If VT would have beaten us, they would have been over .500 and had a bowl game.

Had UTSA (2016) beat us, they would have been over .500. Had UTEP (2015) beat us they would have been .500 and likely a bowl team.

You also missed: win over EMU in the bowl game and win over USM (2016)
