Thanks in advance
I live 10 minutes from Stony Brook's campus.
I met a bunch of people from this board the last time JMU played up here. I used to have a Black Toyota Tundra pickup and we had a tent with some LI chicken cutlet and Italian party hero sandwiches and some local beer. I'll probably bring about 10 feet of hero again and some more local beer, I just have a gray Jeep Wrangler now instead of the Tundra. Any JMU travelers are welcome to stop by our tailgate...tell Jeff Bourne he can have a few slices of our hero again : -) I'll be with a mixed group (JMU/SBU) of friends who are alumni of both schools. We'll most likely be in the green lot near the basketball arena (closest to the visitors stands of the football stadium), hopefully right along the grass again.
As far as tickets and parking...I'm not too worried. Stony Brook draws decent but I doubt it will sell out. It was 85 degrees today here, but a cold front just came through, and they are only calling for temps in the mid-50s on Saturday. That might keep the crowd down, plus a large part of the local population will be wine-tasting and pumpkin picking out east on the North Fork.
As far as lodging: if your budget allows Danfords is an unbelievable hotel in the heart of beautiful Port Jefferson Village ("Down Port"). I'm not sure of pricing, but you're off-season now, so shouldn't be too bad. In fact it might even be the same price as some of the hotels further away near the expressway or on Route 347. Port Jeff is an awesome harbor town full of restaurants and bars and is about 4 miles from the stadium. Also, the Mrs. and I will probably be going out for drinks (hopefully after a JMU victory) with some of our local JMU alumni friends at Danfords schooner bar after the game!
If anyone has any questions, please ask. Two tips: 1) Don't try to cross through NYC to LI on a Friday afternoon. Friday morning before 1pm, after 7pm or early Saturday morning. Friday afternoon traffic is AWFUL. 2) GPS isn't always the fastest way to get places in NYC and on Long Island, so if you have any questions I'm happy to help!
