Thanks for sharing. I thought the Navy Coach was much fairer on the game assessment.

I respect the hell out of Navy but at the same time, beating them is so sweet

You can tell he’s stinging a bit because his game plan was working. From the opening counter, he had the Memphis defense off-balance, and his line shifts on defense were getting unblocked men into the backfield. It really was a brilliantly coached first half on the part of Navy. Memphis has lost to Navy three times without facing the level of coaching excellence we saw on Thursday.

And Memphis just rolls out a 75 yard end run and a 99 yard kick return.

Driving to work yesterday they had the UNLV football coach on the radio and he was comparing his offensive philosophy to Memphis. He said; "Did you watch Memphis last night? We all know how good their offense is. Yet they only threw the ball 18 times. You've got to be able to run the ball if you want to be succesful." "We're not going to be Air UNLV".

We're not little ole Memphis anymore. Pretty cool.

It is amazing that the kick off return for the TD was apparaently very effective at demoralizing a NAVY team that was winning the game. I think they may have let that effect them too much if it completely changed their attitude.

That 75 yard run happened in part because Navy sold out on D and had the safety walked up. They were bringing the house. Its works but you can give up big plays. Once Gainwell broke the line of scrimmage no one was home. It worked the rest of the half but gave up more big plays in the 3rd quarter and the dagger in the 4th. That KO return was huge though. Kept us in the game till the D righted itself. I also think we wore them down physically. It was a hard hitting game and they took more punishment than we did. Oh and our sh!!ty QB was 14 of 18 for 196 with 3 TD's and 0 picks.

That’s one way of looking at it but I’m pretty sure the players comment was that Brady read the defense and called an audible to put the ball in Gainwells hands in the right spot and the line did their job to open a lane which Gainwell hit quick and then it was a foot race.

Football is a complicated game with 22 players in the equation reacting As they have practiced and professional coaches on both sides making informed decisions based on endless investigation of team trends.

Yes we have a QB smart enough to read the safety. He saw what Navy was doing and checked off. Navy opened that door and Brady too full advantage.

My point here was....if the head coach was depressed by that return...how could he motivate his players and coaches? Why not just approach it as..."That was just one play...we have a lot of football to play yet and that run back does not determine the outcome of the game!" Coaching includes a lot of psychology and the head coach has to be the leader and not let one play effect the outcome of the game nor the mental attitude of the players.

This was the type game that playing at home made a lot of difference. Not sure Navy is so affected by a return like that at Navy & not sure we have the confidence to overcome a 20-7 deficit at Navy. But it turned out to be a great victory for the Tigers, regardless of how we analysis it.

Coach N. gave Brady credit on the tv coaches show for that check too - excellent read by Brady.
