MyBB Coach Majerle 2019-20 Season Interviews/Media
9/23/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

The first interview I’ve heard from Coach Majerle so far this season. This was Day 1 of this new radio show/duo on 1580 the Fanatic. Nothing really different than the same things we always hear from media members who are new to GCU.

9/23/2019 – Mr. Colangelo with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

As a little bonus, these guys also had Mr. Colangelo on a little while before the Coach Majerle interview. There is a little GCU talk sprinkled in here, along with USA Basketball and other stuff.

Same old broken record. Best fans in college basketball, no one wants to play at GCU arena (even though every year they lose at least 2-3 home games), best recruiting class, university has grown from 4000 to 30000 or whatever number. He sounds like a commercial for GCU every time he's interviewed preseason.

I know Majerle bashing is a pastime for you, so I won't take that away. However, I do think that generic questions are the primary reason for generic answers. It is pretty clear that a) the interviews didn't know much about GCU, and b) their prep for the interview was little more than a quick look at the roster and maybe the schedule.

It's the same reason I mostly find the national media he does pretty useless. Even really good radio hosts like Jim Rome and Dan Patrick only ask surface questions about the program that yeild the same elevator speech responses that Coach Majerle could give in his sleep. Heck, at this point, YOU could probably give his reply to those same handful of besic questions he is asked over and over. We all could.

To this day, I haven't heard anyone better than Tim Montemayor (Monty in the Morning) at interviewing Coach Majerle. His knowledge of the players and program is pretty deep, so he is able to avoid asking those kind of trap-dóor questions that only ever get sound bite answers. Better questions make for better interviews, in which the audience learns things the didn't know going in. I 100% agree with you that this wasn't that.

10/9/2019 - Coach Majerle at WAC Media Day

I was off the grid yesterday, so just getting caught up on Media Day stuff. Majerle was fine, but found myself really impressed by Donlon. I could easily see him leading the Roos to success in the coming seasons. Too bad UMKC is on the way out.

I have to agree. Donlon's coaching record (109-94) is suspect but he talks a real good game if he can see it to its completion (success). I think he is an upgrade from Richardson. I was not that impressed with Mark Madsen but he is new to college coaching. So there might be a learning curve. As for Majerle, I think he has come to realize that overcoming NMSU is a moving target. When he first started at GCU, his target was overcoming the Menzies led Aggie team. However, since Jans arrival he has raised the ante considerable for Majerle. I don't think Jans' teams are necessarily more talented than Menzies teams but they are better coached, more battle tested, and more unified as a group; buying into Jans system.

Jans players have a higher basketball IQ.

10/24/2019 – Coach Majerle on WAC All Access

In this week's WAC All Access, the conference welcomed Grand Canyon men's basketball coach Dan Majerle. They talked Lopes hoops, dinosaurs, who is back and some new faces to this year's team.

10/29/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

These guys are really awful at interviewing Coach Majerle. Asking about players who will be red-shirting (McGlothan) or rotation guys (Rhymes) ahead of the season opener is worthless. I'm pretty sure half of the remaining questions are identical to things they asked during the 9/23 interview. Enjoy, I guess...

11/12/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

Coach Majerle talks about a rough start to the season, including Davenport and Illinois losses. They also talk about incremental improvements, the challenges of playing with little to no depth, and the upside Blacksher has brought to the team so far this year. They guys also get a preview from Coach Majerle on the SDSU game, before drifting off into MLB and CFB Playoff talk.

11/19/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

The guys catch up with Coach Majerle following the UAPB game and before the Montana State match up. Coach recaps getting the first win of the regular season and goes into a little bit of chalk talk, as well as looking forward to playing a decent Big Sky opponent.

12/3/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic (27:45)

I pretty much missed everything after Majerle tried pinning the disappointment of this season on fans for having unrealistic expectations based on the program's "unprecedented success" in the early years of transition. FOH, Daniel.

12/10/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

These yahoos actually stumbled into some pretty good questions for Majerle, which resulted in some conversations we haven't heard before. I was particularly interested to hear Coach share about his relationship with Los ("Carlos and I have had our battles..."), how different players require different coaching, and tips for Sean Miller on how to be less sweaty on the sidelines. I'm not sure Daniel is the one to be giving those tips, as he can get pretty moist himself, but whatever. All in all, not a bad interview.

12/17/2019 – Coach Majerle with Bruce Jacobs and Helly on the Fanatic

Majerle brags about going back to physically demanding 2 hour practices in the same week he loses one player for the remainder of the season with a hip injury (JJ Rhymes) and has another player expected to miss at least the New Mexico game with an ankle injury (Lorenzo Jenkins).

Well, at least we have a deep bench to... oh wait... we don't.

Can't make this stuff up, folks. 03-banghead03-banghead03-banghead
