I dig that interview. I don’t know much about him but so far he is doing and saying the right things. All we can ask for at this point.

I didn’t look that stuff up Mark, but thanks. Those were just numbers I recalled from when I was getting a bit impatient with where things were stagnating a bit back in the day.

They really all are similar hires as far as resumes. Local guys, with midmajor success. I'd say Cronin's was probably the least proven as a head coach going in only because Murray State had been a mid major power prior to his arrival, whereas the other two programs were built by Brannen and Huggs. However, lots of promising mid major up and comers that don't hit. UC did a good job hitting with Huggs and Mick. Hope they do with Brannen as well.

Mick was a sub-par coach and Brannen is leaps and bounds better. Best thing to happen to us since 1989 is for UCLA to buy his phony snake oil. Adios Micky boy!

This is a stretch to say the least.

Mick was a very good coach, though flawed and reached a level he couldn't seem to surpass here.

It’s what we do as fans. We’d throw down in a bar fight if someone puts our date down but once she moves on we can’t stop talking about how much of a PITA she was. Ah the good old days when we had more game day UT football coverage on this board than the Knoxville News Sentinel. Lol

I heard talk of UC football being a wide open offense when CLF was hired.... lol...I watched NKU in person 3 times last year and didn’t come away thinking that staff was innovating the game on either end. Perhaps those systems will click with a higher level of athlete.

I don’t pay much attention to what the coaches or media say in the preseason until the ball goes up in the air. We will see what things look like come late December or so. People would be wise to temper 1st year expectations IMO.

UC has struggled in the NCAA’s for a multitude of reasons going back about 20 years but what have we averaged the past 5 years... 28 wins a season? 27? Do people feel strongly that this roster will win 27 or 28 games this year? Hope so. Hoping we don’t go from complaining about winning a lot of 55-50 games to cheering both teams scoring in the 80’s and losing more of them. Gotta win a bunch of those regular season games in this conference or you possibly get to host a tournament game instead. Teams like Seton Hall and Providence unsuccessfully tried the wide open offense M2M defensive philosophy in the old BE days. It rarely traveled well and didn’t work when the other team had a better roster or could lock down on D and on the glass. D travels in the AAC which is why coaches and fans have hated UC forever. Houston is using the old UC blueprint for a reason. Time will tell.

I think a lot of fans would prefer to win 24-25 games a year and have success in the tournament than to win 28 games a year and continue getting bounced in the first round. We will see if that happens, but with a new staff, new system, and new players I definitely see where the optimism is coming from.

That's probably true, but I also think it's completely meaningless from a practical standpoint. I mean how do you recruit/build/coach a team to win 24-25 games a year and have success in the tourney v. one that wins 28 and gets bounced in the first round? You don't imo. All coaches are trying to recruit/build/coach a team that wins as many games as possible whether it's in the regular season or in the tourney. I guess you could argue that there's a "handles pressure" skill to coaching, but the reality is if you've won 28 games during the season rather than 24-25, you've probably handled a lot of pressure games very well.

I think the difference between the 2 scenarios you describe, in nearly all cases, is a combination of small sample size, luck and matchups rather than some master plan.

I’d say there could be a couple of things that could lend itself to winning more in the tournament while maybe not winning as much in the regular season.

First is obvious to me and that is the quality of the opponents we play. From scheduling tougher non conference teams to the AAC improving. This could result in less wins in the regular season yet we may be more prepared in the tournament.

Next, I think a well coached defensive team is probably going to be a bit more reliable and can be counted on to show up and play a high level on the defensive end. In comparison a team that may be weighted more to the offensive side may be more streaky as there will inevitably be games where shots just do not fall. That said, if the shots are falling they may be more likely to make a run in the tournament.

Not saying this is part of Brannens master plan, but I do think a possible outcome is that Brannen does not reach the same consistent highs of winning 28-30 games a year but he could also have more frequent runs in the tournament for the reasons above as well as just the difference in leadership, personality, and even luck.

Yeah, the program had grown stagnant. I'm excited about the new look, without making any boasts about how it's going to turn out.

Of course, regular season Ws and Ls are partially a function of schedule. But that's not necessarily determined by the coach and is mostly determined years in advance and very subject to surprises. So schedule is a given going into each season. (By the way, where does all that "coaching leadership and personality" go in the extra 3-4 regular season losses that could have been wins against any given schedule? Does Coach just decide not to waste those talents of his in those losses to save it for the Dance if the team makes it? Hope I don't buy tix for those games.)

The point is I don't think there is a legitimate way to coach to win fewer regular season games against any given schedule to enable winning more NCAA tourney games. Which isn't to say it doesn't happen, just that it isn't a coaching strategy against a given schedule. All coaches are trying to put the best team together to win the most regular season games (relative to schedule) to get the best possible seed in the tournament(s). And then they try to defeat whoever they are assigned to face at whatever location they are assigned to play at. There's no coherent strategy to lose more regular season games to make us win more NCAA games.

As a stupid criticism of Mick? I sure hope so. Not much makes us look more ignorant as a fanbase (or at least as individual posters) than to mock their importance in basketball.

But as a statistic irrelevant to winning games? Not as long as Brannen is HC as I've previously posted quotes of him talking about their importance while he was at NKU.

I'm excited to see a coach who thinks March penetration and recruiting 4 and 5 star athletes isn't "for the fans".

I'm also excited to see a coach who thinks more of this program's history and tradition than to not even pursue top-flight prospects.

I believe he mentioned it in his earlier UC pressers. It just won't be his only focus and he won't beat it to death when we lose because we only scored 50 pts.

This. Always was a Mick supporter. But After 17-18 season if we were gonna do it with Mick, we were gonna do it that year. Never been so apathetic toward UC bball as I was heading into the past year. It was time for a change for better or worse.

Here’s to hope and renewed expectations.

I was thinking the lack of a fall off was because WE HAVE a new coach. That will generate a lot of interest, and in particular, when fans know a new system on offense will be featured. For sure, the new digs has been well received from last season so that helps when you have a modern facility too tout.

5/3rd is definitely a destination hang out now.

it will certainly he refreshing to see a faster tempo offense being ran by our bearcats. Been a long time after watching the high school GCL offense theory. Time for change...….and a good change. I'M looking forward to this season.
