USL Expansion and Realignment
USL Championship awards expansion franchise to San Diego, to begin play in March 2020:

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/spo...adium-2020

With Nashville's impending departure for MLS, it looks like USL Championship will have a potentially tricky realignment for 2020, as it would require moving Tulsa (but not Oklahoma City) to the East; putting the three Central Time Zone teams in Texas in the East, and moving Swope Park and Saint Louis to the West; or going to three conferences.

USL Expansion and Realignment
For any San Deigo residents that enjoy soccer, a NISA side is currently playing.

RE: USL Expansion and Realignment
Ottawa Fury is departing, citing sanctioning issues as the reason for suspending operations, although there are rumors (or should I say rumours since this is a Canadian team) that the USL was willing to waive the exit fee, and the CPL was willing to reduce or waive the expansion fee.

So for 2020, USL Championship has lost 3 teams (Nashville, Ottawa, Fresno) and gained 1 (San Diego).

Queensboro FC was announced today for 2021, and will play at York College with some games at Citi Field:

Fresno will reportedly return in 2021 after relocating to Monterey, California. No word yet on Austin Bold but you figure they are toast with MLS coming to town.

UPON RESTART OF LEAGUE, CLUBS TO BE DIVIDED INTO EIGHT GROUPS TO COMPLETE A 16-GAME REGULAR SEASON

[Image: Competition_Structure_RTP_Web_Cover_large.jpg]

In order to limit travel, the regular season will see the Championship’s clubs divided into eight regionalized groups, and each team will complete a 16-game regular season. There will be five groups made up of four teams, and three groups made up of five teams to cover the 35 member clubs of the Championship.

The regular season games will be played over 13 weeks , concluding on the weekend of October 2-4. Games completed prior to the season suspension in March will be counted and included in the schedule, with teams that were active on the opening weekend of the season having 15 games remaining in their schedule.

Both San Diego Loyal SC and the Tacoma Defiance – who completed two games prior to the season suspension – will have 14 games remaining in their respective schedules. The three clubs that did not play prior to the season suspension – Birmingham Legion FC, Hartford Athletic and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC – will play their full 16 games upon the resumption of play.

RE: USL Expansion and Realignment
I'm really looking forward to this season, and can't wait to watch year 2 of the Legion tomorrow. I realize this is poor soccer as far as the world is concerned, but I just can't get myself into it unless it's my local team. So for me this truly marks the return of sports.

Also can't wait until USL finally settles in. Would I rather Birmingham be in MLS? Yeah, obviously, but I can at least take solace in the fact that they're in the same league as Tampa, Indy, Louisville, Memphis, etc. Just need to drop the MLS farm teams (or at least set them up for pro/rel with League One) and the exurb clubs (i.e. Loudoun) and USL will be in good shape.

I'm just glad to be able to watch a local team on tv tonight and also glad Memphis is once again playing Birmingham. Such natural rivals that go back to the WFL days of the 70's. Remember Tim Howard is our goalie, and part owner. Does the Legion play their home games in the Barons stadium?

Same here, and on ESPN2. The Legion renovated UAB's soccer stadium, and also gave some design input for the new football stadium so I imagine they'll play a couple of games there every year.

RE: USL Expansion and Realignment
Saint Louis FC out after this season, Oakland Roots to join for 2021 from NISA.

https://www.si.com/soccer/2020/08/25/sai...louis-city

https://www.si.com/soccer/2020/09/15/oak...nship-nisa

This for the moment gives USL Championship 35 teams for 2021. It's possible that both OKC Energy and FC Tulsa will move to the East, especially if a full season is played, and without any restrictions.

If the 2020 format continues next year, I could see this happening:

A - Tacoma, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, Reno
B - Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County
C - Phoenix, Real Monarchs, New Mexico, Colorado Springs
D - El Paso, Austin, Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio
E - Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City, Memphis
F - Louisville, Indy Eleven, Birmingham, Charlotte, North Carolina
G - Hartford, Philadelphia, New York, Loudon, Pittsburgh
H - Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Miami, Charleston
