Bye Week/No Game Day
I'm quoting another poster (from the CCSU Game Day thread) who said it best:

"Well, hopefully today was somewhat of a wake up call for our guys. Its always tough to get up for this type of game after such a big win the week before... Good time for a bye week if you ask me. "

Indeed, one does not know how a team will be the game after a big upset win. With a 12 game schedule, most teams have one or two 'clunkers' and hopefully we will have but one and it was yesterday.

I'm just relieved we won.

As they note in baseball, there is no difference in the box score between a 100 MPH single and a swing bunt, both singles...

RE: Bye Week:
Surprising stat: EMU and Toledo are the only teams in the conference with just one loss so far (and Toledo has only played 3 games). It has not been a good start to the season for the MAC. There were some disappointing losses yesterday.

Sam, you missed a salient point: Both the TOL and EMU losses came to Kentucky.

E Mich being 3-1 after 4 games is amazing! But, we've C Mich on the road who just played Miami FL tough lost 17-12, and Ball St who played NC ST tough lost 34-23, and then W Mich who played Syracuse tough, and finally at Toledo who won at Colorado St 41-35! My point is we need to find a running game, and a DL fast...….Start Mackey against C Mich...…..If we want to win the make Glass can't do it all by himself!!!!!!!

Unfortunately the running game and DLine are what they are, nothing much gonna change there. Not much of a run game for the 3rd straight year, and the DLine talent the past few years was a luxury.

Just hoping Glass can make it through the season unscathed.

Mackey had two carries. Hard to draw any conclusions from that. Give the kid a chance.

Hm it appears to me the coaching staff has drawn its own conclusion its Turner and Parker at this point with most of the reps. Mackey gets his chance but maybe not this year Grissom should also be given some more reps at RB rather than WR

Last year against Georgia Southern in the bowl game which I attended, Mackey started I believe? So, why all of a sudden is he basically not playing? Breck Turner should've transferred, and Creighton is doing the same thing to Mackey! 2 attempts yesterday!

Dear EMUGLORYSthe90;s
There could be many reasons why certain players get playing time, and others not. Could be injury, could be not looking good in practice, could be late or missing meetings, etc.
Since Coach Creighton has been at Eastern, I tend to trust his decisions as to who plays and who does not. Every player should know that they can be replaced, and why it is important to be at the top of your game.

Ken, I agree with the decisions Creighton has made the majority of the time, because he's the General of the team, but our running game hasn't been good in 3 seasons! Either replace your OC, or give everyone a chance......Parker looked good recently, but in the 1st 3 games how many carries did he have? Without a running game, we'll not win the MAC...….Without Glass we're 0-4...….He will get hurt most likely

Maybe the problem is the line not the running back
The offense is scoring points through the air

Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a doubleheader - EMU on Saturday and Lions on Sunday.

Both seem to be able to pass protect for very efficient passers but can't seem to run block well.

I believe Eagle Tough is pretty clear that the run blocking hasn't jelled yet.

RE: Bye Week:
I thought the running game looked ok but only ok. CC doesn't have the killer instinct. He doesnt go for the kill when he has the chance. he coaches like theyre up by 30 when theyre up by 6. neathery spoils him by saving his bacon so often.

I left before the punt block and shouted a bunch of obscenities in the concourse and i dont take them back. it was better when we went 0-12 under ron english than that game. we let them off the hook and gagged like dogs. if emu wants to carry themselves like a real team then they have to start winning real games and start finishing teams and that comes from the top. i want to see us run up the score a couple times a year.

hopefully this is rock bottom and we rebound and hang 40 on CMU in two weeks.

I suspect the ineffective run game is more a product of scheme and play calling than it is player ability. It seems like the defense knows exactly what's coming which make it much easier to stop. Is Keen's scheme to simplistic and predictable?

Yes, 10,000 percent regarding his schemes!!!!!! It's junior high calls...…..The RB are being met the majority of the times instantly by a defender! If you take out the 1, 22 yard run by Parker, we probably rushed for 2 yards a carry maybe, against a FCS school! I love Creighton, and I want to see E Mich win the MAC for the 1st time in 33 years, we've 14 senior starters back, so this has to be the year!

Hopefully we get Kevin McGill back soon and the secondary gets back to where it should be.
I re-watched the game on ESPN+ and noticed a lot of names playing that I wasn't expecting. Maybe they were the 2-deeps players but Central Connecticut picked the secondary apart. Those two deep balls that were overthrown by CC would have been the nail in the coffin.

RE: Bye Week:
I've taken some time to mentally reset and collect my thoughts after this game. I more or less share the thoughts most of you have said here. I wrote down some of the reasons why I thought the game ended up the way it did. These aren't excuses, as it really doesn't matter (results matter). But just my guesses as to why Saturday unfolded that way.

1. Injuries: I think we're really underestimating how banged up some of our key players are. Kevin McGill - DNP. Clay Holford - DNP. Shaq Vann - DNP. Ty Eddington - DNP (Hasn't played all season). I'm sure other guys were banged up that may have played hurt or left during the game.

That really adds up. Especially on defense. We all saw a lack of pass rush and poor coverage from the DBs. Well, we were missing two starters at those units. Hopefully they can get healthy again soon. McGill and Holford were keys to our defense in the first 3 games (2 games for McGill). McGill is especially important and we were already thin behind Holford.

2. Poor game plan: I think the entire offensive coaching staff thought we could roll into this game with a vanilla, "show nothing" game plan and walk away with an easy win. Obviously that wasn't the case. It's hard to find a way mid-game to throw in all the wrinkles, especially when you haven't practiced them or charted them out prior to the game. We were stuck with a ****** offensive game plan and our backs against the wall.

3. Hangover from Illinois: As much as I thought Creighton and co. would have the guys ready to play at 100%, that was clearly not the case. I think we have to remember that these are college-aged men out there who are hearing all the hype/media attention. It's not impossible for the Illinois win and the hype to seep into their heads and mess with their preparation. They also hear/see all the media attention and expectations that we do.

4. Weather delay: We've all heard it said - "Weather delays help the less talented team. We had all the momentum going into the weather delay. Scoring to go up 2 TDs immediately before the break. Their defense was tired. The weather delay allowed CCSU to get a second chance at adjustment and to rest their defense.

It also sucked all the energy out of the stadium on our side. Players just did not look the same after the break, and the crowd was just not as into it.

5. Distractions from new SAPC facility/Road travel caught up to us: Maybe this is a stretch, but the 3 straight weeks of long travel could have played a factor. Those weren't short trips. Plus, a new routine and all the related distractions connected to the SAPC.

6. CCSU played and coached the best game of their lives: Plain and simple. Their QB is an FBS transfer from Georgia State, and looked like it on Saturday. We weren't prepared for that kind of challenge. The CCSU QB was primarily a run-heavy QB coming into the week, but he probably had his best passing performance ever against us. I know I didn't see that coming.

This bye week is desperately needed. Creighton and the team KNOW that they have to have serious improvement to have the kind of MAC season that they want. In the press conference, Creighton explicitly said the offensive and defensive lines are where we "need to improve the most over the course of the year." He is well aware of the issues. Can he, Keen, and Neathery fix them? I'm sure getting back the injured players is a start.

EDIT: By the way, new FCS Top 25 polls came out. CCSU is now receiving votes. I'm willing to bet they win their conference and finish the season ranked.
