4-0 Alabama - a playoff team and national title contender

3-1 Mississippi State - an SEC bowl team (more than likely)

2-1 Troy - Sun Belt title contender/bowl team

Yeah it's early in the season, I know...just trying to accentuate the positive. BTW the weakest of this group (Troy) would probably compete for a CUSA champ if they were in our conference this year. I can live with being 2-2 right now. I also feel pretty good about our conference schedule. Glad we've got both UNT and UAB at home. I think we've got a good chance of going undefeated the rest of the year. My prediction:

9-3 (possibly 10-2) and playing (maybe hosting) in the CUSACG.

we play 4 teams with pretty good qbs....do you really believe they won't do everything in their power to exploit our secondary....I know I would...

you might be right if our offense churns out 30+ points/game moving forward...

all I see is 7 wins at best, most likely 6....

I hope I'm wrong....

Yes you have to feel good about our conference schedule. My problem is I just don't feel good about CUSA. I say 7-5 or 6-6. Defense is awful.

RE: The last 3 teams we've played are 9-2 on the year
It’s not about who we’ve lost to, it’s how we’ve lost. There are plenty of teams Bama will blow out this year, but we weren’t just blown out. We were outclassed. State ran the ball left and right the entire second half and we couldn’t stop them. The best team Troy has beaten is the worst team in the MAC, Akron. State will be a 7-5 team because of how bad the West is and getting Tennessee as their East opponent.

I know I’ve come off very negative the past few weeks, but in my opinion, it’s so dreadfully obvious what I’m about to see play out because our team has little talent and just isn’t very good.

UTEP - 3-2, everyone will say how much we’ve improved since the State game, some will even declare Hopson to have ‘figured it out’. The game will be far closer than it should be, but a win will be all that matters.

UNT - 3-3, they’ll win the shootout. We’ll score some points, but not nearly enough. People will blame our bad defense and say ‘we won’t play an offense like that again!’

La Tech - 4-3, realistically, Tech is better, but they have a mental block against us, so giving us the win here. People will point back and say ‘See! We play a worse offense and we can win!”, despite that win coming against a team that struggled to beat Grambling.

Rice - 4-4, many will come back to reality when we lose against Rice. Some will say they’re really improved this year and aren’t a bad team. Rice will go on to have a losing record.

UAB - 4-5, they’ll whip us this year and people will give credit to Bill Clark for being an excellent coach. Meanwhile, they’ll continue to look more and more like a prime AAC candidate after being a laughing stock for two decades. What a difference it makes when athletic departments and fans start caring.

UTSA - 5-5, UTSA is awful. At this point, people will be talking about ‘at least we can go bowling!’ despite how little an accomplishment that is nowadays.

WKU - 6-5, We win Senior Day and some speculate on what bowl we’ll go to. That ‘some’ was surrounded by 11k in the stands to watch this game because every casual fan has better things to do with their time and a lot of core fans are sick of it.

FAU - 6-6 , another average season. Jay stays the coach because a loud minority’s of fans who don’t care about our success and just want ‘their people’ running things have a duck.

It’s all so dreadfully obvious what’s about to play out. I could miss one or two of these and we get to 7-5 or 5-7, but either is still unacceptable. This league is hot garbage and we won’t come within two games of a division title for the 4th time in Hopson’s 4 years. And we don’t have the leadership to make real change (McClain has yet to prove to me he’s the guy who can/will).

I’m watching my favorite team sink deeper and deeper into the ocean because of self-inflicted wounds. And there’s no reason for me to believe more ‘good ole boy’ hires will change that. Football is suffering. Basketball is about to be even worse than it was. Just plain sad.

I actually feel the same way. Though somethings gotta change in the defensive backfield

Wins over both Owls, 8-4, Poydras Bowl, raise and extension.

Next Sunday the State and Gump drubbings will be forgotten, Buster will be a hero, Quiz will be anointed the next Crickets Robertson, and McLain will be selling SUNWACUSA championship tickets for $6. Everything is fine.

I could see that exact scenario as well, BDR, and it’s absolutely a pathetic excuse of an athletic program.

RE: The last 3 teams we've played are 9-2 on the year
I really hope that the team can run the table to restore some glory to this once proud football program. Do you realize that a Southern Miss football team hasn't swept the conference since 2003...sixteen years! That was the year USM knocked TCU out of a BCS bowl bid and the Liberty Bowl as well. The conference was much stronger than it is today.

Like many, I'm skeptical about how well this program will do over the long term with Hopson at the helm. Does he have the vision and charisma to bring quality recruits on board? It doesn't seem that way to me. But if he could finish the season with a 12-2 or 11-3 record that should help some with attracting more attention to the program. An 8-5 or 7-6 record is not going to generate that excitement.

Well, your 6-6 prediction is half glass empty. My 10-2 prediction is half glass full. I just don't see us losing at home this year.

Face it, we were lucky as $#!% to beat Troy. Secondary better put down the bong or we will drop "several" "conference" games.

Glass half full or half empty but i see us dropping 2 CUSA games to finish the regular season at 8-4. Since it will probably be a TTT loss i'm not guessing on if it will cost us a shot at a CUSA championship but if I had to guess I'll say we will finish 2nd in the west.

There's no doubt that the defensive backfield is the weak link on this team. I'd like to think that their performance against Alabama was so embarrassing and humiliating that they collectively vow to never let anything like that happen again. I want to believe that these players are more athletically talented than what we saw. Needless to say, if the d-backs perform against C-USA competition the way they did against Alabama it's going to be a depressing season. If they turn it around, things may go very well.

They have 70 blue chips and several first rounders. Of course they kicked our ass. They're going to "outclass" most teams on their schedule.

I think you miss my point entirely. I don't doubt their talent being overwhelmingly better than ours, but I'm referring to how we played. When our DBs aren't turning around to chase a receiver until five seconds after they pass them, that's a problem. When every play an announcer is talking about how a Bama player is wide open, that's a problem. Those aren't talent issues, those are coaching issues. There'll be plenty of teams with similar talent that will be completely destroyed by Bama, but they won't be completely destroyed by Bama's third string.

It's the difference between a team trying and blowing you out versus a team treating you like their little brother's JV squad that they play to make them feel good, but aren't worried in the slightest.

You may not have watched the game but we had receivers wide open to. We don’t have two Heisman candidates as receivers on the field at one time so, yes they might have been wide open more often but l got to ask WHAT THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT? Do you seriously expect us to have those guys blanketed on every down. Sure you do because you are wishing and hoping and unrealistic.
Don’t forget the running back they have that could take it to the house on any play. I’m sure our safeties and dbacks could just ignore THE NUMBER ONE RATED RUNNING BACK RECRUIT IN THE NATION and concentrate on coverage of their Heisman guys on every down. Hate to tell you this but Monkens best team got handled about as bad by WKU in his sole CCG appearance.

Stings a little, but true.

RE: The last 3 teams we've played are 9-2 on the year
What bothers me the most is Hopson is a former Secondary player and came up as a Secondary coach prior to becoming a Head Coach and the weakest part of this team is........the Secondary.

it's dumbfounding...

I know we got a few shiTTTy calls in the bammers game, but I've seen zero improvement in that arena...

it's either a missed read, over-pursuit, or "hey man, where's my blunt?" as they continually get 'burnt'...
