RE: Rice Baylor post-game thread
Is there any way to see a replay of the game? Thanks!

If not, how exactly were we able to improve defensive performance in 2nd half?

It's true that the stats show that it was a major defensive improvement:
1st Half = 326 yards
2nd Half = 101 yards

I'd say that it was more of Baylor trying to run more in the 2nd half than in the first (and thereby running right into our defensive strength). I'm not sure if the stats support that, but that's what I seem to recall. Perhaps also that the main receiver (Mimms?) was less of a factor in the 2nd half except for that last game-ending reception.

They passed less in the second half. Adding in the strip sack, Baylor had 12 second half passing plays out of 29 in the game. I probably have that denominator undercounted and maybe the numerator as I'm sure a two or three of Brewer's rushing gains were when we lost pocket contain. Baylor only targeted Mims twice in the second half, both in the 4th quarter (one drop).

We didn't generate much more pass pressure in the second half (some, but not much). Rhule stubbornly committed to running the ball, and our front seven had it bottled up pretty well. They only had four first downs in the second half compared to six in the first quarter.

Getting the two starting tackles and Williams back would help the running attack for sure. There is no question our blocking was significantly worse last night (Baylor was fast on defense but not particularly big).

Our defense could be really, really good in 2020 as long as we don't lose anyone. It's fun to watch some of those sophomores and juniors play. I also thought Smith, the JUCO DB, had a nice game.

Booker was a man possessed -- that was some downright violent running on his part.

These DL and LB's are the same bodies that played last year, but they obviously have been 'coached up' to an impressive level. I'm already wondering how long we'll be able to hold on to Smith and the position coaches on defense....
