9 TD passes wasn't enough for Washington State, as Wazzou gave an epic West Coast version of "coug-ing it" at home tonight ... allowing UCLA to come back from a 32-point deficit to win 67-63.

San Jose State got $1.5 million to play Arkansas in Fayetteville on Saturday, but they also took 5 interceptions and a dramatic 31-24 victory -- the Spartans' first ever win over an SEC opponent. San Jose topped the Hog's tying TD with another of their own less than 2 minutes later ... with just 1:13 left in the game. San Jose's 5th pick sealed the improbable win.

It was just the Spartans’ fourth win over a power conference team this century. (The Spartans beat Stanford in 2000 and 2006 and beat Illinois in 2002.)

Stanford was first and last to score at home against #16 Oregon. But the pair of sub-40-yard FGs wasn't nearly enough to beat the Ducks, who won 21-6.

Hmm, the juxtaposition of these two stories might bring back painful memories to some.

True, but whatever misery strikes the Hogs is OK with me.

*One might think that scoring 63 points in a loss might be some sort of record.*

At least in a regulation game. Is that still the record?

Alas, as an eyewitness to the source of said pain, I am very aware of the sad resonance of the Saturday games with longtime Rice football fans.

Thank goodness the writeups I saw all mentioned that it tied the most points in a regulation loss, without mentioning the other losing team.

It was Arch Manning (son of Cooper, nephew of Peyton and Eli, grandson of Arch). He has a freaking canon already and was pretty accurate. Threw an absolute dime on a 44-yard TD pass. His team threw a lot of short swing and sideline passes as well and he was more accurate on those than Rice's QBs. Good pocket presence, used his feet on many occasions to escape the pass rush. I should note that I was only half-joking about him being better than Rice's QBs, as I haven't seen them live and I doubt a 14-year-old would really be better than Rice's QBs against collegiate competition. It was more just praise of 14-year-old Arch.

You have given updates on Arch for a couple years. I listen and remember.

So Rice’s 2023 QB recruit is between a Manning and a Wells.

I joked to my brother in law that I was scouting Tulane’s future QB, jesting that Manning would start at an SEC school but end up at Tulane after flaming out (Tulane’s current starting QB is an LSU transfer). I think there is a significantly better chance of your son ending up at arice than Arch. Also, Arch is old enough to be a sophomore (I said he was 14, but forgot that he actually turned 15 back in April).

Tennessee or Ole Miss

Yep. Archie, Eli & Cooper went to Ole Miss ... Peyton to Tennessee.

Nope - it's Duke. As long as Cutcliffe is still there. That's the key tie-in.

Interesting that the co-holders of the record are a flexbone triple option team and an Air Raid team.

If Cooper is still living in New Orleans I wouldn't rule out LSU. Otherwise, I agree Ole Miss is the most likely (even with Cutliffe at Duke).

Huge news across town - UH's quarterback D'Eriq King is not going to play the rest of the year and either transfer (probable outcome) and possibly sit out the year as a redshirt. Maybe the OU game was his audition for 2020.
