The talent is better than last few years, the defense is worlds better, and we play like these games against name opponents are actually winnable. I have my issues with playcalling, but this 0-4 start is the most fun Rice team to watch in at least 5 years

I would say 0-4 in real life. Like you, I look at 'moral victories' like Little League participation trophies.

But I feel good on the direction that the team has taken.

Much better than the 'cringe-fest' I had in Bailiff's last two season.

And better than at the end of last year, especially after the loss to UTEP.

Preseason is over. We played a very tough slate respectably. Now we have eight games we have a shot at. I expect the conference games to be very entertaining.

So far, I am feeling better about Bloomthan I expected to after 4 games.

We looked every bit their equal tonight. Super conservative playcalling, lack of execution on offensive side (numerous drops and mindless sacks), and blown defensive assignments cost us a chance to win. Hopefully the coaching staff gets out of their own way in conference play.

I agree with all but your first somment-- I don't think we were Baylor's equal by any means. Their speed killed us. The turnovers and penalties killed all but a couple drives in which they did not score.

I saw only one legitimate drop. The one in the end zone I wouldn't blame on the receiver as that pass was almost end over end.

Watched TexasU-Okie State tonight, and commentators relayed an interesting comment from Mensa, to the effect that as an Offensive Coordinator all he ever worried about was trying to score as many points as possible, but as a head coach he has to balance that against other factors like what he needs to do to help his defense.

It’s pretty funny that with all the ex-Rice influence on the UT staff, the biggest idiot of them all (Warehime) didn’t actually coach at Rice (given all the idiot coaches we’ve had).

No. Fail and you are two scores down.

You need two scores and a 2-pt conversion regardless. If you try and fail now, you know you still need two scores. If you kick the XP and then score with no time left on the clock or with no TOs, and then try for the 2-pt and fail, the game is over. Essentially it just comes down to wanting to know how to gameplan the remainder of the game.

I am not with you at all!!! Unless you believe the team is more likely to succeed going for the 2-point conversion later (and there is no reason to believe this), then you might as well go for it earlier to know how many more scores you need to tie. Otherwise, you are just giving yourself the illusion of a 1-score game if the 2-point is going to fail (whether you take it earlier or later).

Warehime was a GA here for 2 years.

I look back at that sequence, the missed FG, and the near-INT by Thornton with lots of green ahead of him as the plays that could have changed the outcome. But this said, we were in striking distance of an athletically superior team and that has to be encouraging.

Yeah. That was for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Right after he graduated from Tulsa. Which makes me think that The Toad brought him with him.

If you go for two and fail, you will need two scores. If you kick the PAT you might need two scores. Also, there's what the other team is going to do. If they know you need two scores, they start running out the clock immediately.

You eventually have to go for two, and it doesn't matter when you do it. The advantage of going for it earlier is that you know exactly how many scores you need and can game-plan accordingly when there is still more time left on the clock.

This is a valid point and I think the best argument in favor of waiting. Perhaps even enough to convince me! That and the illusion of saying it is a "1-score game" feels nice. It's a close call for me, either way. I prefer to go for it earlier so I knew whether I needed to score once or twice when maybe I still have time to score twice. If you wait to go for 2 until after your 2nd TD, then all your eggs are likely in the "1-score game" basket by that point.
