Awesome video! Thanks for posting!
Yesterday's win was so important and a critical way to open MAC play. As bad as CMU is - and has been - it can never be taken lightly.
Some have posted concern about too many penalties, and they have a right to be concerned. That said, CMU also had 15 penalties, matching WMU, so it went both ways. It was a rivalry game and the way the game was called. I'm confident WMU won't give, or receive, 15 penalties in any other game this season.
Bottom-line, once again, Western Michigan University is BETTER than Central Michigan. The Cannon Trophy is home in Kalamazoo, where it belongs. And CMU's uniforms were so loud and ugly! Get rid of that neon yellow crap, fellas.
Sure, and we also had almost double the penalty yardage, because while (comically) 7 of their penalties were offsides, we took several unsportsmanlike and personal foul penalties. Both are big issues, but ours reflects a lack of discipline in a more serious way IMO.
I agree it's good to be dominating CMU like this, obviously. That program has a lot to dig out of.

When your rival dominates you as bad as WMU has CMU recently, all you can do is dream.
The better team, with the better stadium, better band, better town, better dance team, better hockey team, better fan base, better uniforms, better concessions, better academic university, and better chat room, won Saturday.
Hey Chip fans...where is The Cannon Trophy? Deal with it.
Quote all the stats and penalties that you want, that drive that our offense made after they made their fg to make it 9, after a strong defensive stop to keep them out of the end zone, was huge to me. That showed me who the stronger team was right there, when it mattered.
We put our stamp on that game with that sequence.
The last drive of CMU was about them not getting a big play and eating up clock, which it did.
Wasn't. Even. Close.

One takeway: Jim McElwain is no John Bonamego -- he is light years ahead offensively which has been their Achilles heel over the past 10 years. We're going to have to deal with this guy down the road. However, I don't believe he will out recruit Lester/Big Lou -- Lester's Illinois roots are paying huge dividends in the area of recruiting.
I was a little disappointed we went so conservative in the second half but make no mistake, Lester is constantly running the numbers to make sure another 2017 disaster doesn't happen again.
Defensively, I thought we played well -- and they kept CMU out of the endzone for the most part. We need to continue to improve the defense -- especially the D-line. If Big Lou can recruit heavily on the defensive line, I think they are capable of taking the program to the next level.

This game reminded me of the old “coach that shall not be named” games before his final season. Gain a lead. Play keep away and basically make it impossible for the opponent to come back while protecting your players... terrible from a fan perspective... boring... but effective.

Since I enrolled at WMU in 1999, we've gone 12-9. I've got to admit, that was surprising to me. I thought they would have been ahead in that time period.

When Bono was hired Chimps were happy to have a coach with connection to the "Glory Years" of Deromedi, whose "dream job" was CMoo.
Hopefully Lester, whose "dream job" was-is WMU, will do much better.
To be fair, many people criticized the Bono hire. McElwain is definitely light years ahead of Bono. With Bono, we lose that game 45-10.
McElwain made some strange calls Saturday, not settling for FG's when our K is one of the best in the country was baffling. Not that we would have won, but the score would have been closer and the game may have played out differently. But then again, he was playing to win I guess. We are playing a lot of young guys considering we were a mess last year. I think this year will be filled with mistakes but we will win 5-7 games.
Lester looks like a good coach and he isn't an old man so he probably understands modern day offenses better.

In Bonamego's defense, it did not help that Dave Heeke made him retain almost all of Enos' assistants. That program had a messed-up culture as a result of Enos/Heeke & Crew.
I am confident McElwain, and your current AD, will return CMU football to respectability, but the hole is deep. At least Heeke is gone (too bad for WMU).
Having to watch the game last weekend from the elevated endzone suites I noticed something that is making Wassink even more lethal this year...
He’s throwing guys open with anticipation... he got one to sky moore before sky even cut behind his defender... it’s even more impressive that his anticipation is working so well with the young wideouts so early... he was chucking the ball to open spots all game and just letting his receivers close on where it was going to be... there were a number of incidents where I though the chips may have interfered a bit.. holding guys up as they broke their routes open...
Hopefully see Wassink have same success this weekend... hope he has better success with his shots downfield. We had guys wide open deep all game...

Got to give Esposito credit, Defense is playing better. Esposito has done a fabulous job developing and recruiting DL. We have some monsters coming in next year. Can't wait to see what incoming Freshman Miles and Moore can do next year!
